Robert~ lol o ya and then after you pay they start telling you about the wing being flimsy, the hood scoop shaking, the hood being thin and not needed to be pushed on, differential clatter, etc etc hehe dealers are sneaky sometimes.

But all of these things are normal and were designed that way on purpose due to weight and performance, why didn't the dealer tell you that? The whole concept of a center diff is easy to understand if we are talking stricktly open, locked or torsen. The definitions on how they work, what they do and how to use them are very clear and not debatable. What makes our DCCD so hard to understand is that at this time we don't have any undisputable definitions from the designers of the system exactly how it works and how to use it. (Aside from the vague definitions and instructions given to us in our manuals) The problem with this thread is that everyone has an opinion as to how DCCD works and how to use it, but no one backs up their claims with any proof. What I mean by that is no one says "...the DCCD works this way and I know because when I was driving the car I set it like this.....under these road contions.....while doing this type of a turn.....with this much throttle.....and the car behaved this way......so therefore this proves what I'm saying." When we start to give answers like this the DCCD will be more of a usefull feature than a mystery to which you have some of the clues, but still can not solve. |

I understand what Static means though.
Luckily I researched the car before hand and knew more than the dealer did. (Thanks to online forums) If I hadn't researched the STi onthe web, I would have been mad if I found out the hood scoop shakes, the spoiler shakes, all the noises etc...but I knew before hand what I was getting into.... |

Well, now I don't know that I want to (re?)engage a prolonged debate, but, if the clutch acts as a conduit for torque transfer between front and rear outputs as a function of the speed differential thereof, how would the clutch be "locking" them to 50:50 at any point where they are at the same speed (i.e. no or equal slip from front and rear)? I'm not sure the de facto conclusion in the last several posts that entering "locked" mode implies equal torque distribution is quite right. I think the term "locked" here can be misleading, as it would seem to indicate a rotational, rather than force-based, lockstep.
This would account for jonfalstead's position of gearing producing a particular torque bias regardless of locked vs. unlocked mode without taking his wording to mean that the clutch cannot redirect the torque to effect a locking of wheel speed. More generally, this seems to account for the oppinions of those who gave up and left and still be without contradiction to the reasoning of the remaining. Or maybe I'm just wrong all over the place |

I love all the sounds it makes - I don't plan on installing a sound system anytime soon - I prefer the standard STi surround sound

dccd noise
The dccd in manuel mode will make the noise at any of the manuel settings other than open, noise is the loudest at the second green to the first orange arrow. Can it be heard outside the car, yes louder than inside!
As far as the amount of tq it changes i dont know, but what i can tell you is on very tight rough roads, running the dccd at the second orange arrow rear tires show much more wear and front tires reduce in wear, and car exits turns with a very faint over steer! |
