Basically, a blast to drive! Just because they are in two different price ranges doesn't make one exclusive from the other. The same as folks who compare the SRT-4 (FWD & $20K) to the EVO and STI (AWD & $31K). I could care less that the M5 is a lux sedan and that the STi is not. If I were driven by luxury or the neighbors I'd be looking at a Mercedes E55, Infiniti M45 or G35. All nice rides but not what I'm looking for for various reasons. Yeah, the M5 and STi are from two different sides of the track...but they have the same soul. - Janq "...You gotta have soul!" - James Brown

Price is always relative. If it's worth it to you, go and get it. If it isn't then don't. My brother thinks I'm stupid for buying a $70,000 car for the family (M5), and a $50,000 one for me (M3). And being on the list for a "Beater" Sti for $30,000+ is just plain insane (he's a Doctor too, so we are talking same income levels here). And my wife says she can't believe the cars worth more than "her" house. (If I was single, I would probably live in a studio in order to afford a Ferrari).
I believe that paying MSRP for a low production model (M5, M3, S2000, Sti, etc) is not only reasonable, but a great deal (during the first year of production); specially if you can turn around, put it on e-bay and sell it with a 4-digit profit. I'm first on the list on the new V10 M5 at sticker but my dealer made me sign a paper that if I sell it for ANY price, they will have the first option on buying it, but can't be above MSRP, protecting themselves from what I mentioned above. So I can actually buy it, drive it for few months or 10,000 miles and bring it back to the dealer for my money back (believe me, it happened with the current M5 in 1999 and 2000). Some of us think that paying "sticker" is worth the price of entry for a first year production car. Some of us don't. And I respect all those opinions, even from the ones that are willing to pay $10,000 over sticker to get the first Sti. If it's worth it for them, then let them do it. It's their money after all. And this applies not only to "M5's" but to any item on the market (remember the millions of dollars payed for a baseball few years back?) So in summary, my PERSONAL opinion is: I will never go to a dealer that charges above MSRP. But that's just me. I will pay MSRP for a hot low production car during the high demand/low availability years. That's the price for not having to wait like everybody else. Once it is not a "limited-availability" vehicle, I won't. I will never critizice people who do pay more (or less) than I do because this is a free market and everybody does what they want with their money. Wheter you burn it (me) or save it (my brother), it is up to you. It's your money after all. |

Naka,
I wish I had read your post back in '99 when I was trying to save a few bucks. Passing on an MSRP opportunity toward the M5 was in hind sight 'penny wise and pound foolish'. You are 100% correct as I could have driven the car for a year or two and sold it as late as summer 2002 and broke even. Sigh! Anyway, this time around I'm just going to go for it. I'd love to pay $400 above invoice like 'robmarch' but in my major metroplitan area nobody is offering a deal even close to that. And I would drive as far north as VT (wife's parents) or south as FL (Daytona!) if such an offer presented itself. Alas, I'm on a deposit only list toward MSRP at a dealer 15 minutes from my work and thats good enough for me. Funny thing is my wife just last night at dinner suggested I buy the STi outright (versus my company leasing it for me) and then turn around and sell it on e-Bay after a year or two. I'm going to give it a strong consideration as I know that 500HP V10 M5 is going to be pulling at my heart & purse strings. Damn! I don't drink, smoke or eat fattening foods but I'm addicted to speed & curves like a crack addict. As for affordability factors, like you said thats relative to one's own personal situation, wants, needs...and ability to justify. - Janq |

Nake,
I agree. That is precisely the point Rob and I were making. When the EVO came down to MSRP (past week to 2), I was thrilled and am strongly considering buying one. But, I can't without knowing how the STi compares. I don't need to be the first on my block to have one but then I buy to please myself not others. My brother is saying the same to me about wanting the EVO/STi. He keeps saying, "they're nice IF you're in that kind of market." I know what he's getting at cause he thinks I should get one of the "other" 3 cars that are more luxury sport such as: 325i/330i, A4 quattro, Merc C320. Most people view those cars as "worth" the money because they have the outward appearance of where the money is spent. The EVO and STi are special to the driver as the money is spent on things that are not easily seen by others but appreciated by the drivers and the passengers. At this point my preference is more towards the EVO as I've driven it and it's SWEET! I love the Recaro seats and the whole car is a bit roomier than the WRX, which is the same size (same body) as the STi. But, without driving the STi, it's hard to tell. Of course, if the STi comes in over $33,000, then I'll reconsider as it's more than I really want to pay for the increase in power over the EVO. Choices, it's a good thing we got'em. T |

My dealer just called and said they now have the number: $31,545! I forgot to ask if that was with destination. But I bailed on buying it. I am now #1 on the waiting list for the Legacy STi! -- Bill |
