Default what's the deal with WR blue mica???

I think this color has been only only a couple of limited production subaru cars. ie: 22b, s401 etc. I absolutely love the color and I am hell bent on getting it on an STI. How come it's soooo limited and rare, its a beuatiful color. Is their perhaps some drawbacks to it? expensive maybe? or what? could a paint shop get the same color with factory quailty?

The STis I have seen in person seem to be the same WR Blue that has been on the US WRXs. However, I did notice in Australia (or was it UK?) Subaru site where you can view the car in different colors, they are showing it in Mica Blue. It is much lighter and softer than the WR Blue.

I assume we are getting the WR Blue since that's the color they've been showing off.

Matching subaru factory paint quality shouldn't be much of a problem...

The one you see in Australia is the same as Pacifica Blue here in North America. Pacifica Blue is known as Reddish Blue in some markets.

Different markets often have different colour names, this causes confusion. Not to mention that photographs given different light or colour correction seldom show the same car the same way twice.

Sonic Blue (93F) != WR Blue

Sonic blue is the WRC, 22B color (and also a few limited edition STi's).

WR Blue is different.

Two of the major companies involved in color matching for vehicle refinishing, Spies Hecker and Standox, are now owned by DuPont and seem to share the same paint color matching database, accessible via either http://www.shcolor.info or http://www.sxcolor.info. This database doesn't have any entry for paint code 93F nor does it associate the color description "Sonic Blue" with either Subaru or Prodrive. I'm not saying that a paint color with that code and name doesn't exist. I'm suggesting that it might be very hard to get a paint shop to match it. However, one can find many "blues" associated with Subaru (click here) and two other "blues" with "Prodrive" in the description (click here).

When Alex Fedorak had the #0001 1998 2.5 RS painted in Sonic Blue (it was Rally Blue Pearl), he actually personally brought the paint with him from Japan. (or so the story goes. This is the car that became the 2.5 RX SCC project car).

No Subaru has been sold in the US painted Sonic Blue.

P1 is Sonic Blue.

John Felstead's JDM STi V RA limited 4dr is Sonic Blue. Beautiful color!!!

Glenn, my post was not intended to suggest that the color called Sonic Blue never existed. I know full well that P1s in the UK were marketed as Sonic Blue. I was merely suggesting that if you showed up at your local high-end paint shop and demand Subaru Sonic Blue for your respray, you might be disappointed.

In my post above, I listed all the Subaru paint color variations which included the word Blue in the color description. You probably noticed that none of those descriptions used the terms World Rally or WR. So I looked up the most recent (from my impaired perspective) paint TSB for Subaru Imprezas, 12-75-01R. As you can see, the color code for USDM WR Blue is 02C. When I plug that in to http://www.shcolor.info I find this color description: BLUE PEARL-MET. No mention of WR or World Rally or World Rallye. Perhaps the same is true of Sonic Blue - it's in the database, hiding under a different name.

The only reason I can see to repaint/refinish a newly-deliverd STi is for show purposes. In this case I suggest a "high pedigree" paint color name such as 'New 555 Blue Mica' (color code 74F).

Sure, I was just telling you what I knew (or didn't know) about it.

Now that I think of it, maybe my brain transposed 93F and 74F.

I notice Steve Breen's site lists Sonic Blue as 74F.

Mica blue looks the BEST, (the identical color that the Acura TL have) the other blue are just kinda odd.

Hmm. How did you arrive at this conclusion? Examining the SOA TSB for paint colors, 13-75-01R, I see that the code for Blue Ridge Pearl is 95H. But when I consult the list of Subaru colors that contain the word "blue" in their description in the Spies Hecker database, I see many "blue mica" entries, but none of them with a color code of 95H. But, as I mentioned earlier, the Spies Hecker color descriptions may not match the color names under which Subarus are marketed in various regions of the world.

A fascinating and colorful topic.

Hi there,

With reference to the link above, here are the colors we get in France for STi 8, known as STi MY 2003 here:

Pure White (non metal)
Premium Silver (metal)
Black Mica (metal)
WR Blue Mica (metal)

Note Black Mica (called Graphite Black Mica in the UK) is completely different from previous Blue Black Mica we had on MY 2002 STi. It reflects gold, an not dark blue anymore.

Hope this helps

The black that was on the order form was called "Java". Whether or not this was a misprint or a mistake it was the listed black color available.

Well, I expect it to be the same as the one we've got in old Europe...

Here's a couple of pics of mine, even if not really displaying the gold reflect

Note that I removed the WRX Impreza and STi logos (trunk and grill badges).

According to the IWOC guys, your MY03 STi is an STi 9 (there being TWO bug eye STis, the 7 and 8, MY01, MY02) though this is no longer official numbering. I believe the 7 (MY01 bug eye) was JDM only, and the first Euro non-gray version was the MY02. I could be wrong.

Hi Glenn !

Quite difficult to answer as this numbering started in with version 2, and we only got our first STi's in Eurpoe in the end of 2001 (MY 2002 for us). My car is the Euro spec MY2003, so my understanding of the line up is that it is a version VIII.

If you wan't to follow me, let's try to get back where it started. Seems they were not planning such a line up when they build the first WRX STi version in 1993'

Sorry, I forgot to mention that Version are not directly related to MY, as you can see in the GC8 story.
There is a certain overlap...

This is why I guess you are wrong thinking JDM and European MY2001 and MY2002 were two different versions... I'm pretty sure they were one: the seventh
