Default New Ascent

Just copped a Premium for the wife and we both love it.

I see a lot of people complain about the CVT. To be honest, I like the CVT and the issues people have with it don’t bother me. That might be due to the fact we just traded in my wife’s Maxima and we both hated that car and CVT.

I'm thinking about getting an Ascent for my wife as well. Can you give some more impressions of how the CVT feels after owning it for the past two months?

Nice and geez not sure why I have not ventured to this part of the forums. We got my wife into a limited back in late September. I can tell you for the CVT it is not bad. I know about Maxima CVTs since my sis has a 2011. It just feels weird but the Ascent doesn't feel that way.

Also, it takes me a minute to adjust since I go from a loud STI to a pleasant ride in the Ascent.

Well... Subaru uses a metal band style CVT. As far as I know, Nissan uses a non-metal band in their CVT...

The CVT isn’t bad, like stated, and much better than Nissan’s CVTs. I still enjoy driving the car. Fuel economy isn’t bad either, but it’s a turbo, and we know how that can lead to a heavy foot.

I have started to notice how it will stay in a “lower gear” at times, keeping the rpms up, when it’s not needed. The annoyance of it is all me because I pay attention to things like that. My wife doesn’t even notice. But other than that, no other issue.

Default Ascent trunk lid

Has anyone experienced the trunk lid coming down on its own?

No issues with trunk lid but here are a few things after 10mos. Dealer ended up replacing all rotors and brake pads. I had some grinding that turned to squeaking which was kinda embarrassing at the drive thru for a newer vehicle. They tried to resurface and then it went to full out replace after rotors were out of spec. This is a known issue is you look at the ascent forums or anywhere on the web.

We also asked for the ECM reprogram that is out there. We had a slight surge and delay at times and that update has really made things better.

Only other thing concerns the seats. Awful cracking and this is even with me conditioning it every few months. That looks like a known "quality problem" from Subaru and from what I read many with outbacks and other models experience this.

Almost forgot and this will be a non-issue if you do not have aftermarket flaps. The A/C drain or one of them is at the rear passenger tire or in that area of the rear bumper. If you have Rally Armor flaps, the water will run down the front of that rear flap and you will always have streaks on it.

I know this is super anal but when I have a free weekend I am going to relocate that further away.

Just picked up an Ascent for our family. Generally like the vehicle so far. Very quiet and smooth to drive.

So an update on my Ascent

25k on it and the only major issue I've encountered is the transmission stumble. Had Subaru update firmware same time as my scheduled oil change and no further problems.
My Brakes still have a good amount of meat left on them considering that sometimes i forget that I'm not driving my Sti. It's looking like i need to replace my tires before my pads, which the stock tires suck on the premium model anyway.

My dislikes
1. My driving style has me placing my side mirrors to cover my blind spots. The passenger side allows me to do this, but not the driver side. I understand the Blind Spot monitoring system, but i never trust it, not even in my Sti.
2. the driver side strut is loud while going slow over pavement imperfections. I think its attributed to the lack of sound deadening but for a family SUV, i don't think it should be this loud. It isn't that loud in my Sti with Tein coilovers. Either way, my Wife doesn't notice it so I'm just being picky.
3. When my phone is connected playing music and i receive a call, the music will not continue to play after the call is done. Even if i turn the vehicle off, it still won't play. The phone volume icon appears when i adjust the volume which tells me its connected to the phone still. I've even turned my phone completely off and it won't "disconnect". no radio play, no USB play, and won't connect to my wife's phone. It seems the system resets after 24 hours then back to normal. It doesn't happen everytime and of course i can't replicate it in front of subaru, so that's a loss i'll have to take until i upgrade my head unit.

Other than that, I love this car. Fuel economy and power sucks on 87 and Cali gas in general. I filled up with Gas from Oregon and Washington on family trip and the car was completely different power and fuel economy wise.
