STi Wing removal...
Although I love the look of the STi wing, I am tired of having random panic attacks when I look in my rearview and freak out for a sec as it looks like someone is following me.
Anyway, has anyone removed their STi wing? Does the WRX wing fit with the same holes? What are my options?

Yes, people are removing their spoilers. No, the WRX spoiler will not fit in the same holes. Best bet is to find someone on this board with the same color WRX as you and just swap trunk lids. |

The woles for the standard WRX wing, and the S202 wing are all ready on your trunk.

STi<1: Both of the holes are on the lid? so you can remove the STi spoiler and affix a wrx one in its place?

Affirm...when I removed my spoiler, there were all the wholes holding it, plus two more holes that were there but not used, they are not drain holes and they are are the identical size and shape to the other mounting holes. If I remember correctly that makes for a total of 15 or 17 holes on the trunk lid. They did not fit for the 202 wing, and they are pretty far forward. I would bet my trunk lid that those wholes are for a standard WRX wing.

All you have to do is search for "wing" or "spoiler" in the STi Forum. This has been cover numerous times.

so to get this straight...
will a regular wrx spoiler cover/fill all the holes used by the STi wing? I did the search for wing and spoiler and didn't find my answer in any previous postings which is why I posted. c'mon now.

The STi spoiler leaves 17 holes on your trunk. 12 for the bolts holding the spoiler in, 4 from unused holes (presumably fit the WRX spoiler), and 1 for the break light wire. AFAIk, the standard WRX spoiler requires 4 bolts and the break line... which leaves 12 holes for you to fill. Bit of a mess really. Your options are:
a) do a trunk swap with someone who has the wing you want b) buy a new trunk (~$250) and get it painted (~$150) c) get an aftermarket CF or fiberglass trunk lid d) plug them up with rubber plugs like STi<1 If you go with option b) you may need to have the rear quarter fender panels on the car blended in ($300... ugh). All in all, option a) is the easiest and cheapest (you may even get some money out of it from the wing). Hope this helps. Good luck. |

or option E: plug the holes with some small stainless steel button head screws. Either leave them stainless, or hit them with OEM touch up paint...

The funny thing is that I actually tried the button head screws... but it looked like my car had been riddled with bullet holes or had a bad case of acne. Couldn't live with it... but YMMV.

I have done this the easy way, found a new wrx that was sold and traded trunk lids with wings attached, even got a little $$$ out of it. Remember to swap out the locks. Also, the shocks on the STI for the trunk release is very strong, I would advise against opening the trunk witht hte trunk release. I always use the key manually now.

I can't recall asking anybody to try to remove my wing with a ...crowbar...and if I did then they did not do their job properly...its a sad job they have. This definitely does not do the job.
So an other minus side with a wing like that: more illicit crowbar wielders walking the streets amoung us. |
