Figured this was as good a place as any to drop this.

Quote:
Comcast turns customer routers into public WiFi hotspots.

Comcast has revealed that it plans to use home customer's routers to expand its public WiFi network. But it insists the system works on a separate signal and won't affect privacy or service.

The company is calling the idea a "neighborhood hotspot initiative." If you subscribe to Comcast's Xfinity service and have a wireless gateway (a single device combining the router, modem and VOIP equipment), it will broadcast two wireless signals: one private for your own use, the other available to the public (under the SSID "xfinitywifi"). The public signal will be at 25 megabits per second, regardless of your broadband package.

The public signal isn't a complete free-for-all: people can only connect to it twice on a particular device free of charge, after which they have to pay an access fee unless they are a Comcast subscriber. The routers broadcast at 5GHz, so not all devices will be able to connect.

According to Comcast, the public signal is completely separate to the customer's private signal with no danger of unauthorized access. It also says the use on the public signal won't affect the speed or capacity on the customer's broadband service in any way. Tom Nagel of Comcast insisted to CNET that "Our broadband customers will continue to get the service that they are paying for."

Comcast is putting the marketing emphasis less on the ability to stand in the street and grab a connection from a random nearby resident's cable connection and more on the idea that you can have friends or family visiting and let them get online without having to hand over your Wi-Fi password or worry about their data use.

Presumably, if you do want to download a particularly illicit file, you can just switch to the public signal and then, if the police or lawyers ask questions, quite credibly blame it on a random passer-by. And of course, presumably if a random passer-by does use your router's public signal to do something nefarious, the lawyers will probably try to pin it on you.

The system will automatically be activated on all compatible wireless gateways: customers can opt out, but will have to actively do so. Around 100,000 customers already have the relevant boxes, which will be provided to all new customers on a plan with 25 megabits per second or more.

The announcement comes on the same day as the unveiling of a combined Wi-Fi network with Bright House, Cablevision and Time Warner that's billed as the nation's largest with 150,000 hotspots (the network doesn't include the ones in Comcast customer homes.)

The idea is that if you subscribe to any of the cable services, you simply need to keep an eye out for Wi-Fi networks called "CableWiFi" and you can then log-in using the same details that you use to connect to hotspots provided by your cable firm.

that is actually kind of interesting, depending on how they work it out.

with a 25mb signal, they could easily do that without impacting your service if they use a completely different set of docsis channels.

IIRC they only use 4 now even for the higher level packages and most newish modems support 8 channels.

5GHz though? They'll have to sit next to the AP.

My bill to is now up to $217 / mo

All i have is internet / DVR / HD ... it was around $100 when I started. Every couple months they jack it up $10 or so with no notice. It's about time I canceled. Cable should not be more than my electric + gas bill combined ... ridiculous.

Reason # 124-158932714321=8573421 why I don't have cable any more plus some OT members.

The money I do not waste in my cable bill goes for my Ford fiesta

Dude wtf... call and threaten to cancel that **** pronto. Maybe they'll reduce your rate.

That's what I hated about comcrap in DC. Every month my bill would go up by a buck or two. No notice, nothing. They'd pass it off as tax increases. Bull ****. Hate comcast.

Mine was up to $220 a month with HD DVR, internet and phone plus HBO. I called them up and they gave me the HD package with HBO and Showtime for $159 a month. After all is said and done I'm still paying about $190 a month but it's better then $220. Give them a call and you can probably work something out.

Yeah that's still pretty high. They're fleecing us pretty good here.

I think what they're getting me with is the "it's cheaper if you get the phone service" ... but add up all the taxes and "modem rental" nonsense and it's maybe like $1 cheaper, and the trick is they sell the phone # to a bunch of telemarketers and make way more money off of you that way. Dirtbags.

I'm getting my bill and looking at some other options here. Will be calling shortly. Thanks for the motiviation OT.

We just switched to internet and home security. We're on a promo for $70 for the first six months, then it goes to $85 after that. I suppose we will see how long that lasts, last time we had them we were paying almost $80 a month just for internet. Once our DirecTV contract is up, I think we're just going to drop TV service all together and just run internet and stream everything.

As for the article posted, it seems like it would be easy to do this, considering that Comcast provided a router with our install, which is used for the home security connectivity. So, if the neighborhood wifi is 25mb, does that mean I could subscribe to their slowest internet package and then just hop on the local wifi network and get a higher speed?

I have comcast/x, I usually go up to the local location, flirt with the counter girls and get some great promotions. In general, they are meh.

How is Fios compared to comcast in terms of price?

Actually it's $60.
Basic cable is actually free (no box) if you have Internet. Box rental adds, but you get HD with it.

I did and haven't looked back. After receiving a bill for $187 for cable & internet, the choice was clear. Since I'm never home I cancelled the tv and now just have internet.

I haven't seen a bill in months due to the $257 credit from the receiver & DVR.

We're in the middle of a Comcast nightmare right now. We decided to switch to Comcast because AT&T internet wasn't working at >1mbps download speed, and Directv was fine but we wanted an all-in-one service. We decided to get Xfinity service. Internet was installed and works great, ~40mbps download speed. Home phone still isn't working after 2 weeks. Cable works fine, but the DVR won't record any shows, which is unacceptable for certain family members who like to fill up the DVR with HGTV shows.

We did an online chat with a Comcast "service rep" last night. The employee was unforgivably stupid. What does turning off our television have to do with the DVR unit? Nothing, because they are only connected by a VGA cable! Comcast must put all the college dropout monkeys on the online chat. After 2 hours of wasting our time turning devices on and off, all to no effect, we told Comcast that we wouldn't have to pay for service this month, so hopefully a Comcast truck will show up at our house today and attempt to get their **** together. Jimmies are rustled.

It is ridiculous but we also have an additional HD box which is another $10 a month. It is really stupid that it comes out the same if you have the phone service. We only have it so we can have one number for doctors and what not, makes it easier for making appointments.

when you have the tech come in, make sure he takes his MUDDY BOOTS off on the porch and does not TRACK MUD all through your house

and if he re-arranges your furniture, make sure he puts it back

And above all, do not let him near any of your computers, they'll install so much bloatware on it, set your home page to 4x comcast tabs and it embeds itself in the registry so it keeps coming back. (this is what happened to my mother)

25/15 + Extreme HD package = $99, plus $15 for DVR. Apparently I can upgrade to 50/25 for $10 too. Current bill with taxes and such is ~$136.

Ok ok... by basic I meant the 70+ channels of absolute ****. As for HD.... not really. Like a couple channels but it doesn't look like real HD to me.

Call and threaten to cancel...they will then let you sign up for another 2-year contract at the contract rate.

Your rate is high now because you are off contract and basically month-to-month.

I just did it and got a better package (Showtime and Skinamax + free HD DVR) for $50 less than I was paying before.
