So I may not be updating this tread as often, not that I have been lately. Other then maintenance stuff, I haven't done anything as I had been on the hunt for a daily driver.

Over the past year or so I've become more and more serious in my searches til I came across a deal I couldn't quite pass up. Found a green/silver 06 Forester L.L. Bean edition that came in on a trade.

I'll still be doing some personal touches to it, but Vicky's gonna basically sit. I may take her out on the odd weekend but the plan is to do a resto-mod in the future...

The insurance expired on my Impreza over the weekend. Moved her into storage. This is probably the only pic of the 2 together for a while...

First Forester didn't last that long, but Vicky met the new one for the first time the other day :P

In preparing for the interior refresh/rebuild I'm going to do this winter, the parts collecting has begun. I was gonna do it over the summer but then thought I'd like to enjoy the car on the occasional weekend before I do.

When I got my amp, it came with a bass knob. I didn't run it though. I was told people only use these if they "don't know how to tune an amp" or "don't know how to build a box". But knowing me, I would've still kept it and not thrown it out. One came with the underseat sub in my Forester, and I really liked it! Found it to be very handy. Went to look for the one for the amp in Vicky and couldn't find it. Thinking back, I'm pretty sure a former friend stole it.

Ordered a new one directly from JBL and started brainstorming where to mount it.

The knob's orientation only allows it to be mounted up onto something from the underside, but didn't want to drill more holes in the actual dash then I had to. I realize I've pretty much never have used the cigarette lighter in a very long time and the USB adapter in it was really just for show :P Decided to mount the knob here as its perfect being right by the head unit.

Took the innards out so as to not potentially damage anything and trimmed the ***8216;wings' off the knob.

And then cleared out some of the back of the cigarette lighter mounting "wall". I initially wanted to have the dial stick out through the existing lighter's hole, but there's nothing back there to mount the knob to, turns out.

Some industrial strength double-sided tape and it slid right in. It's nearly the same length as the "roof", so most of it stuck, it's not going anywhere.

Re-assembled the knob and put everything back together. Still have quite a bit of room being the knob's "butt" and the airbag module.

There's a bit of a gap from the cigarette lighter hole, but you can't really see it unless you bring your head down to shift knob level. Not hooked up yet though, will run the line for it when I redo everything. I'll probably extend the wires and re-locate the cigarette lighter into the armrest pocket at the same time.

It has begun...

Not only a new job, but new career, which means some of the things I've always wanted to do will be more affordable.

Step 1 this year is a partial re-do of the interior.

Something I've been keeping out of sight, and out of mind, is the right 1/4 panel.

The first thing the previous owner did after 6 months of ownership is make a late left turn and got hit. Didn't know it at the time of purchase, the Carfax and ICBC report were clean. Found out years later that he took the car to I-don't-know bodyshop and asked to have it fixed as quickly and cheaply as possible before his wife found out.

The potentially questionable workmanship is actually not that bad after 20 years.

This is where your right arm would be sitting in the back, passenger side.

Looks worse then it is, it's actually pretty solid. Gonna clean it up and patch it for now (not at the bodywork step yet)

This is sticking your head in the trunk, and looking up at the forward, right corner, just behind the rear glass. Also looks worse then it is, still feels solid.

The last few years on the road, the hand brake was maxed out and just barely holding the car.

It might be both brake cables stretched out, but for the time being I picked up a new conjoining T-cable (whatever it's actually called).

Old one would barely come out; another surprise from the previous owner.

New one made a difference, but think my other cables are still stretched (will be taken care of at a later step).

Years ago my gas cap kept getting stolen one summer. I ordered a remote remote fuel door kit from the dealer, a flat door from a forum member, and finally put everything in.

Looks like I'm gonna need a filler tube eventually, and more 1/4 panel work (at a later step), but managed to get everything out and swapped over.

With the interior out, not that hard, but only this to show for it :P

Why Subaru took this option away from the coupes and sedans halfway through the run I'll never know.

Nice and flat.

Anyone know what this says? I imagine unleaded fuel only...

Also changed out my shaggy and fraying driver's seat belt and installed the phone cable for the sub remote, but not picture worthy.

So, hopefully this post makes sense.

Anyone with aftermarket speakers that don't clear the factory speaker grills, and have to use the covers that comes with their speakers, know how impossible it can feel attempting to tighten down the speaker in the cramped space by the back glass. My rear speaker would always do that slight farting sound this whole time cause I can't get my fingers or any tools back there.

So something I always wanted to do, I mounted the speakers into the factory brackets first (using the adapter rings that came with the speakers). The bolts that go through the grill and then through the speaker are a lenght where they first bottom out on the factory bracket. So drilled some clearance holes in the brackets so they can poke through. I then trimmed the grill to clear the factory bracket bolt holes. Now I can mount the entire speaker with factory bracket in at once first.

When I pulled the rear speaker shelf cover off to get the speakers out, it came out unbroken in one piece, but the factory grey carpet literally just fell off.

Looks like I'm going to be recovering it, and when I looked at it I noticed I don't need to use the child seat anchors. I deleted the holes for those by gorilla gluing more, particle board? circles into the holes. The rear shelf cover is kinda crappy felt carpet wrapped in... that stuff that you nail into the back of Ikea furniture.

I opened up the speaker holes in the cover so now it can slide over and clear the speaker grills.

The basic idea:

Did it in stages over a couple of weeks. The cabin's floor and the inside surfaces of the outer panels are all sealed up.

Combination of brush-on and spray can rubber coating (where I couldn't reach). Takes about a week to fully dry, then new carpet and put everything back. Next will be the trunk.

I painted the speaker shelf cover with the cheapest, oldest paint I have lying around so that when I go to use spray glue I'm not spraying an absorbent sponge, and the glue will actually sit on top.

The thing easily soaked up 2 and half cans of paint, but the spray glue sat on top for my new fabric to stick to.

I'm going to coat it with clear sealer before putting it back in.

Going a different route and replacing almost everything with blue denim. Found some that almost matches the paint code!

Everything but the lower cushion has been put back in the rear seat row.

Spoiled myself!

Sorry for the crappy, nighttime cell phone pic. Found a pair of 2016 BRZ (or are they FRS seats?) for sale locally. Bought em off some kid who didn't quite know what he had for a really good deal and they're in mint shape.

I've sat in some BRZ at new car shows over the years and it's like they're personally tailored to me. I find them ridiculously comfortable.

Last summer I went through a big phase of making (or trying to) my own tshirts, and found that Michael's carries these fabric paint in a pen.

Uchida Fabric Paint Marker

It's the same paint that printers use for tshirts. I've ran one shirt through the wash 4-5 times now that this stuff doesn't flinch. I think it's full out paint cause even their white marker will cover black fabric without any of the fabric's colour showing through (and it's JDM to boot :P )

These seats aren't hard, but tricky to find around here in the colour(s) I wanted. I don't feel like having them re-upholstered and didn't want to pass up the deal, which is why they're red when nothing else in my car is.

I have seat brackets on their way so with these markers I started on the 'shoulder panels' on one of the seats. One pen does both panels.

So far I'm happy how it turned out. I found it a bit harder to do then a tshirt cause i can lay a shirt on a hard surface, and these seats are a bit more squishy. So when I press in, I wouldn't be surprised if some paint's getting absorbed by the sponge underneath.

I'm letting it dry and think one more coat ought to do it. I picked up 2 more blue ones, should be enough, and black one to do the stitching.

I should have blue left over and will try and change the stitching on my steering wheel to match.

Finished my denim carpet project yesterday, and let it sit in the sun all day today.

Earlier I took a torch to the original fibres of the carpet. Turned it into a big sheet of plastic already molded to the car that the denim could then stick to.

I've had worse projects, but this wasn't the funnest I've had either. Not sure if I'd do this again, maybe with similar looking carpet of some kind? Killed my dad's old ancient rivet gun in the process - have a new one of those now. Rivets *should* be hidden, if not I'll just touch em up.

I also unloaded 4 cans of this spray that's more robust then scotch guard, but doesn't dry hard like a clear coat and crack. Stays flexible. Vicky's a car that'll be driven "every other weekend" essentially, and I'm guessing about 95% of this will be covered by seats and floor mats anyway. I don't foresee an irritating amount of staining.

I wanted the matching dead pedal to my WRX pedals to I'm not rubbing the denim itself. The OEM WRX one I could only find for about $50, small and no real way to install on this.

Searching eBay I found a similar looking aluminum dead pedal intended for a Peugoet 206 (apparently) for $10. Bolted it straight to the carpet.

And being that this denim has been tailored to the car, I sized it accordingly.

I hadn't sewn this much since my merit badge...

Carpet's in.

The rivets that show will be touched up. And I think the original carpet may have slightly deformed or curled from the torching process - I probably held it longer in some spots. I had to stretch back into place a little bit. I put all the bolts back for stuff and I'll let it sit to see if it slowly molds back into it's place. I'm thinking some of the wrinkles are from that, see if those flatten out as well.

Almost forgot about this guy in the trunk!

I had already painted it once a long time ago, but the surface rust bubbled up real bad.

I called the dealer to ask how much a new one is, I was told $23 so told them to bring it in. I was about to put mine in recycling when they called back and said it's no longer available. Don't have a sandblaster, but with an angle grinder and wire wheel on a drill, got it to start working.

Got it all shiny again, primered it, and used more leftover supposed-to-match paint in a spray can.

I'll have to pull up that corner of the carpet again to install.

I forgot to also upload the ECU brackets I also cleaned up and supposed-to-paint matched them as well for added protection. They're already under the carpet.
