Buying Older Impreza
Hi, I have an opportunity to pick up a '96 Impreza 2.2 awd for little money. On the outside it is very nice. I'm thinking this to be a good project car for tricked out Auto-x'ing and stuff. What I'm asking is what mechanically should I be worried about in an older Impreza? Thanks! Shane Kullman '98 RS Red

Well, I guess I'll chime in here... I have a 95 Impreza, and I've never had to do any mechanical work on it besides changing the belts when I first got it. It's a reliable car!
Seriously though, the only thing you'll probably have to worry about is tuning it up to a higher spec. |

New to the board. I purchased a 96 LX 2.2 AWD for $10K w/ 40K miles in July. No squeeks, grinds, or other unknown noises. Performance has been above sastisfactory. Consumer Reports listed the 96 impreza as one the most reliable used cars between $10K-$12K. After upgrades and rallies, I am unsure.

Thanks, but it's a no go. I went and looked at it on my lunch break, '96 LX 2.2 awd, abs, 4 wheel disc, Automatic! Yuk! Here's the kicker 33k on the odomeder!! All for a bargin $8450! Well I'm not sure if I would want to go through a tranny swap. Oh well. Shane Kullman '98 RS Red |

That's a nice price - I got a '96 OBS 5-speed with 86K on the odometer for $10K even. And that's below KBB value too.
Although, converting to a 5-speed would push your price over $10K. *BUT*, if you're doing an EJ20 swap, you'd be swapping out the tranny anyway, so you don't have to factor in the cost, except for the addl. auto-to-manual parts like the shift lever and junk like that. -Edwin |
