Swapped in a 17’ STI rack into 04’ WRX , can’t get pump to stop whining…
So basically I got a used steering rack and pump from a 2017 STI track car let out, pretty low miles like <30k.
Well I finally did the swap two weekends ago and used all brand new power steering hoses with worm clamps and the IAG HP line kit and new o rings in the rack as well as the black suction adapter (even put grease on it). It bled out fine in the air engine off AND on, lock to lock, no air bubbles. As soon as it’s on the ground and under load, the pump is whining and sometimes shakes the steering wheel. When this happens though, there is still no air in the reservoir. It gets me to work at least… I’m at a loss here, I have a hard time believing the pump is bad considering it’s from a 2017 car and I think I’ve covered everything that could be leaking in air. I’m considering putting the stock pump back on and see what happens. Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC

I checked the lines this past weekend and found the return line with a small seep but I fixed it with some hose clamps. I’ll have to check again this weekend though so if it’s still dry. Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC Last edited by wabisabi; 06-07-2022 at 10:42 AM. |

If the steering wheel is shaking, you still have air in the lines, or a leak.

Also, what fluid did you use? Years ago, I either put the wrong Dexron or too cheap of a Dexron fluid in my 05 STi and the steering wheel would shake randomly without warning. Changing the fluid fixed it. |

I’ve driven it for more than a week now and the shaking has stopped but the whine continues loaded or not (sounds like a supercharger lol). I followed your guide in the swap, only difference I did was the return. I used an M16x1.5 to 6an male straight to a 6an female to barb. Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC |

I used Valvoline Dexron III. I’ve been reading around and people seem to prefer synthetic ATF which the Valvoline doesn’t say it is. Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC |

Okay so I exchanged the fluid with Mobil 1 Full Synthetic, and it didn’t change a thing. Finally sucked up and put the stocker pump back in and it fixed about 90% of the noise. Still whines a bit with low speed turning but no where near as loud as the VA STI pump and no more shaking either. I know people have issues with the stock pump not handling the increased ratio so I’ll plan attempting a rebuild on the VA pump. I’m also assume that since I have some noise still I could have a leak still, likely at the o ring connections at the rack.
