Thumbs up 3.0 H6 into 95 Impreza: Phase Three, Driving

First of all, for those not up to speed:
H6 Conversion Phase One, Installing
H6 Conversion Phase Two, Wiring

Anders says:
Eric came over last night to help with some of
the final preparations. Mostly fluids and stuff.
Cranked up the car, thankfully it still cranks
and I didn't mess anything up, because that would
be SUCH a buzz kill.

No leaks, so we let the engine warm up. Finally
the thermostat opened, so we added more coolant.

Spent some time playing with the power steering
pump, which is noisy. The fitting I welded on
may have some cavitation, or who knows, it's
a little weird. Worry about it later, it feels
fine driving.

Tested the brakes a third of the way down the ramps,
and they held, which is good. Backed out into the
driveway and yelled "Get in!" to Eric.

Eric was thinking that we would just drive around
the neighborhood at 1500 RPMs.

Well, at least I didn't goose it on the street *I*
live on.

We tried some 5% throttle and it sounded pretty
good, nothing was exploding. I turned onto the
Green Level heading toward Matthew's house and
opened it up.

Vroom dude! Man that thing is noisy! The exhaust
AND intake are making a bunch of noise. The good
kind! The intake
ends at the throttle body, no filter. I figured
h3ll, they used to do it at Indy. I'll be fine
for a mile on a paved road. And I was.

I'll let Eric jump in with further descriptions of
the ride.

Got home, shut it off, no leaks from the engine.
After some low-fives, Eric went home, and I sat
down to a couple beers and some burritos.

Ahhhhhhh

Eric Says:

Yep, I sat in the sphincter-clenching seat thinking "holy crap, he is gonna
blow up the car during the first mile of test driving..." No working tach, no
temp guages, no oil guages. Yep, we're ready, HAMMER DOWN!

(The windshield was fogging up and the stock lights are so crappy that we
couldn't see where we were going anyway. So that made it okay to do full
throttle runs up through fourth gear... )

Once back in the garage, Anders wondered how fast we were going. I tell him
that I saw 85 on the speedo during the last pull into fourth gear. He just kept
grinning like a doofus, he was quite dazed by that time and unable to create
any facial expression other than a silly grin.

I don't know how fast it actually is, but it pulls hard, and keeps on pulling
hard through all the gears. Lots of grunt. And it sounds absolutely FANTASTIC.
Really deep old-school growl, but you can still tell that it is a smooth modern
engine. Hard to describe, but I guarantee that everybody will like it!

Great fun, and I am amazed that at how quickly the swap happened. Good work
Anders!

Later,
Eric

More Blah blah blah on the first run at: LinaRacing.com

Still need to put in the blower motor, ac box, 'n' stuff. Also need to fab up a intake 'n' filter.

It's a rally car, not a drag car!

I have so many other things to do that interest me more than 1/4 mile, I'll probably never go to an actual track. A friend of mine has a GTech meter, that's about as close as it will ever get.

Just finished my first prototype intake. Very cool. Welding all that thin aluminum tubing is tricky! I'll get a pic up at some point.

Yes and no.

Yes, you have to take the entire aluminum cover off to get at all that stuff.

No, it doesn't have a timing belt, it has a timing chain.

Default Torque

Torque, gotta love it.

I was looking at that stock 3.0 Dyno that you have posted on your site.

Then I was looking at a recent dyno of a stock WRX.

I just thought it was pretty interesting that you are making more torque at 2000rpm (160lbs/ft) than a stock WRX makes period (147lbs/ft). As a matter of fact, you would almost be making more torque at 1000rpm (140lbs/ft). Different dynos, different days, yeah...I know. Still....I just thought it was interesting.

It seems like you are going to have a LOT of fun rallying with that low end like that.

Yes, monster low end torque is fun fun fun.

But I think that the published figures for stock WRXs are 217 footpounds torque max. The EZ30 is 210. Therefore, my guess is that the dyno graph for above is someone's actual dyno run (which would make sense given that it has a name on it .

So that means we're looking at a engine output graph (mine) vs a wheel output graph (Wendys). However, everything you said about the shape of the graph still holds true.

I just took my codriver for a ride in the car. She said, "Uh, we're going to have to get better brakes."

Very cool Anders8!

What are you thinking about for brakes? What's allowed in your class?

Sweet. I can't wait to see this monstrosity in action. Let us know when you run it in the rally down here in SC. I would be very interested in that.

wawazat:
*anything* is allowed in my class. Open class is pretty free, about the only restriction is the engine has to be made by the same people who made the body.

So brakes are essentially limited by budget. However, the truth is, some uprated pads will probably do the trick. Look at it this way: in road racing, your tires have huge amounts of friction with the road. So, you can put huge amounts of friction into your brakes.

Gravel/sand, you don't have that much friction with the road. If you try to brake that hard, you lock up the brakes, which doesn't put nearly the heat into them as when they are decelerating the car.

IronMonkeyL255:
I'll be down there 11/22. Check SandblastRally.com , I'm on the entry list.

For those that are following along...

I welded up the last joints on my custom intake yesterday, and built the bracket. You can see my pictures here:

Front view

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Yup, we were at PBX last year. It was a bit of a test run of some of the things we were getting ready, and practice for my Navvie.

Lets see, last year's PBX was rally tires, rally computer, skid plate, lights.

This year I SO want to return, however, the Sandblast rally is the same day!!!

Oh well. Next year I'll make sure they don't schedule fall Sandblast over PBX. I love TSD.
