Last time I let a women run my mower I had to replace some of my siding.
Mower: Push the arms forward to go forward, back you go back, one more than the other and you turn... what the heck is so hard about that? |

Women can't drive a car, let alone something that complicated.

Witnessed no less than 10 transformers overloading and exploding. (It's not lightning, folks) The Glenn Highway is in complete darkness from Anchorage all the way to the Glenn/Parks interchange. Power is out in all of Anchorage and Eagle River. APD responded to downed trees on the northbound lanes of the Glenn Highway, but travel isn't blocked. Definitely my craziest drive home, bar none. A Grant Aviation Cessna Caravan landing at PANC had a wing strike... This is some storm.

It's nothing compared to the normal winter storms we get out here were the trees are damn near laying flat on the ground and I'm worrying my roof is going to go flying off!

Saw a lot of lighting minus the lighting storm in the baxter/patterson area. didn't hear any explosions but I could tell a lot of transformers were sparking and I bet there was branches on the power lines.
No power at my house and other then Lake Otis and Tudor there was no working traffic lights on my drive in to work and I pass through about 9 intersections. Got power at Conti Nissan but its dark across the street. |

Kinda weird Spenard never lost power nor Strawberry/Jewel Lake. Street lights were out though. Tons of downed trees, some big ass trees just completely uprooted. One fell on my moms house and another giant one crushed an SUV parked on the street. This was near Commercial and Mt. View Drive, they got hit hard over there.

And do you have any reputable, scientific references to tree size difference? I'm actually curious as to where you came up with that. |

It isn't really about tree size difference. We get winds like that all winter long, but the trees typically don't have leaves on them then. Because they do now, they impart much more wind resistance, and thus a higher force applied to the trees themselves.

If you look on page 11, this study found that OLDER/larger trees have less wind resistance than younger/smaller trees. Therefore we are allowed to make the assumption that older, aka larger trees are less wind resistant than younger, aka smaller trees. Therefore, you would expect to find less older, larger trees that survive high wind areas. Sure there are exceptions, but the evidence points towards that trend as the scientific study shows. Plus, I don't see any of our native large conifers and pines on the list of "high wind resistance" list of species. If you want more proof Rusty I'm sure I can dig up more land surveys for you. This assumption is based off of the statement made by the research "Our research shows that larger and older trees lose more branches in hurricanes. Larger trees (40 to 79 inches in diameter) lost a greater percentage of their branches compared to small trees (less than 8 inches in diameter) (Figure 16)." |

Right, and the middle states have high winds with fully foliaged tree's.
The fact of the matter is it's not THAT big a deal, but because it rarely happens it is OMG!! much like new people moving here freaking out about an earthquake. Or people visiting down home freaking out about REAL rain and thunder and lighting. It's new, different, not understood so its an OMG world is ending moment. Even in winter, I haven't seen anchorage get that high of winds, except maybe in 2001, when mail boxes were flipped in down town. Generally the valley gets the brunt of it and the past few years has gotten worse. I'm glad I have a wood stove for heat when the power goes, and I keep candles, matches, etc handy. |

With the amount of hurricanes and high winds that battle the east coast, based on the "research" I'd venture there would be no trees left over there. |

If you guys look at all the pics of downed trees on ADN you'll notice most of the trees that went down have shallow roots. Some people had about 30ft of lawn lifted right up.
