66 Vw bug mid engine, ej20g with nitrous
Here's my nearly done project. I still have a lot of kinks tonorin out, but everything roughly works at the moment.
The car started as a 66 bug. It has a 95 ej20g in the back seat with a wrx tranny. I have an sti tranny ready to drop in, but waiting for the big boy engine from the machine shop to run that. I've been working on this forever, it keeps going through different renditions and this is the latest one. Engine: 95 ej20g, forged pistons, sti rods, bearings with extra clearance, arp head studs. stock ecu with robtune 550 tune, td04h turbo at 18psi, one step colder plugs, lightweight flywheel and pulley. I'm running an air to water intercooler setup with a tank, heat exchanger, and a massive pump, it actually holds more water than my cooling system. Cooling: Mishimoto radiator for a Honda engine, just got their upgraded fan, and may upgrade the radiator to a 3 row if I overheat. Since the heater core is basically a 1/2" bypass around the radiator back to the water pump intake, I put an oil cooler I had laying around on it to help cool, and restrict the passage through it. Also removed my thermostat. Tranny: 03 wrx (beefier one), 1/2 and R&P polished, shot peeled, and knife edged. 4.11 R&P, shorter 5th gear. Made into a transaxle by removing the sender diff and output gears. Clearanced for an sti clutch. Currently running a s wrx clutch, might throw the 6 speed clutch in, I think it slipped in 3rd with my nitrous. Cv joints are polished Porsche 930's Nitrous is a nitrous express proton. Only used a 50 and 100 shot so far. Capable of 150 but haven't tried it yet. Full roll cage, and my buddy made an easily removable engine and tranny cradle. Brakes: Fronts are made by airkewld, they use 4 piston wilwood calipers. Rear are made by cnc, and use their 4 piston calipers and an 11" rotor. Cnc hand brake and wilwood proportioning valve. Suspension: Rear suspension uses the Vw trailing arm found in later vw's. But the inner and outer mount are 3/4" heim joints. I'm running fully adjustable qa1 coilovers with 900# springs. Front suspension is mostly stock, but I have a double a arm setup being shipped from Brazil from imohr Wheels: I have a track set of Porsche cup 2 wheels with nitro nt01 tires. Front I run 205/45/17, and rears are 255/40/17. I have a drag rear wheel set with real wheel racing beadlock rims, and MT ET street 235/60/15 tires. I'm also getting a Porsche knockoff set of wheels for daily/burnout use. I've got a bunch of random stuff, racing seats, removable steering wheel, gauges, 150mph speedometer. I both love and hate this project. It's a massive time and money pit, but it's fun when it works. It weighs in at 2000lbs but will probably gain 100lbs with the sti tranny and new suspension system. Since I can't make it to any car shows, I figure I'd show it off on the interwebs. Pics in the next posts

The next engine is going to be a 2.5 sleeved block, it has arp case and head studs (machining was needed for the case studs). JE billet pistons, Manly H tuff rods, king xpg bearings, fully balanced, lightened flywheel, massaged ej251 heads with stiffer 253 springs (seeing how these do). Ej253 big port big runner intake, ID1300 injectors, big fuel lines/pump/rails setup. Going to run a 49lb amr turbo (older but it's a start). Forge bov, grimmspeed uppipe, titanium headers.
Most of the stuff I got from an engine that caught fire. But all the bottom end stuff is new besides the crank. I'll post pics tomorrow of the engine. |

Super Cool and simple, great way to pull that off.
So what did the shipping on that imohr suspensions cost from Brazil? Been eyeballing that set up too. |

So it was $2000 for the ones with spindles, and $500 to ship it, but I think it’s another $200 to get through customs. Normally they ship ground, but it’s closed in Brazil so we convinced them to go freight since we ordered two. I’m super excited to see how that suspension handles, I’ll let you know. Hoping to do a track day sometime this summer. |

Nice build!
I've got a 69' bug-based build w/ STI engine in an R/R setup vs. your M/R setup. I also have Imohr suspension parts in transit - I went for the STR Front and Rear A-arm setup. Can't wait to get the bits and test em'. When are you're parts supposed to arrive? |

No pictures to share yet, but my suspension package has hit the US and is on its way to me, might be here EOW! I'll start a post about my build following that just to start a thread. My build is more akin to an 818 vs. bug body so it will be different, but she'll be fun to share with people! Can't wait to hear how you like your parts.

This thing is mildly terrifying to drive, But getting use to it!
Cooling issue is solved by adding an electric pump switched on by my fan. The ass end is likely way too stiff and likes to slide out a bit easily. It is easy to control though, and doughnuts are easy! I will need to get the engine sealed off and try some auto cross. The front end steers great, I have a lot more turning radius, and feels pretty good so far, but I have limited miles on it. Ran into an issue while building my race motor though. I was hoping to use some mildly ported sohc heads with a turbo grind and stiffer springs. But the valves are not playing nice with my higher compression billet pistons, and I think cheaping out on the heads is just not going to work I will be looking for some built heads, or high hp capable heads soon if anyone has some they would like to sell. Looking for some capable of 600hp, though I only plan to make around 450whp on turbo, and I will just nitrous the rest should I need it. I will add more pictures soon Last edited by Mauricemonge; 11-13-2020 at 01:37 AM. |

Oh t will be! I only had the early ej20g in it, and the heads do not flow as well as 205 heads. I do have the nitrous, but I think a good sized turbo on the 205 will make it a killer/wheelie machine.
I actually spun a couple (maybe all) my rod bearings from oil starving. Pretty sure it was from the doughnuts. Lasted a few hundred hard miles after that, but it had some minor running issues that made sense after it died. Bent over and bought a killer b pan, pickup, and tray for both engines. It will be back, with a bigger turbo soon! Last edited by Mauricemonge; 12-15-2020 at 12:01 PM. |

All back together, went with a killer b oil setup, hopefully the extra capacity and better pan design keep me from starving again.
Making a firewall at the moment and dropping the engine down 1-2 inchs Also getting closer to finishing the 2.5 engine I am building for it. Still hoping for 450whp, but even 400 is going to scare me. |
