Ej207 purchase help
Hi everyone, my 2003 wrx stock motor with 230k miles is feeling its age, and instead of dumping more money into this motor to keep it alive or completely rebuilding it from the ground up id like to jump ship for an EJ 207 and either rebuilding the trans or swapping that as well. My intention is keeping it relatively mild as far as power and most importantly CA smog-legal. I don't go to tracks or "street race" I'm done swapping parts and messing with the tune every 2 years BUT I love my bugeye and want to keep it looking as factory as possible with a good foundation for "reliability" and smig more power without making it sweat. I work for a shop with some very knowledgeable guys who swap motors often and the owner who is very talented when it comes to race transmission and motor builds for a veriety of vehicles. They want to help me and will give me one of the bays and a lift for as long as I need at the shop BUT when it comes to subarus they dont know everything. Im hoping you guys could point us in the right direction for what ver 207, how to keep it CA legal while still getting good gains in hp over my 230hp stage 2 +tune my bug used to be.
Before you comment just to say to use the search function. I prefer to talk to people who are interested in sharing there knowledge directly. Id be happy to look at links anyone provides but i enjoy the real time discussion. I also understand the money pit this is but for what i could sell it for wouldn't get me anything more reliable or make me happeir to drive. I hate the thought of cars being throwaways because a motor/trans is done and the car isn't worth the work. I would enjoy the poject. thanks and all the love.

Let's clearly define your power goals. You state smidge more, but you already have significantly more power than it came with from the factory. So how much power are you looking for? What turbo will you use? What will you use the car for; auto-x, track days, canyon runs, daily driving, etc?
If looking for less than 300hp/tq, I'd go with a JDM 205 w/AVCS. If you want more than that then the 207 is a better option. So let's hear some more specific answers and then you'll get some better advice. Though, above all, you should be talking with your tuner more than us. Try one of the local futons for CARB questions. You'll get a quicker response that way. |

a 207 is not going to be legal in california just to let you know, you can kinda hide it but if you get sent to the ref youre going to be soled.
