Default Small Dent on Door

I have a small dent on my driver's side door from someone hitting it with their own car door. If I remove the door trim will I have access to the inside of the outer sheet metal so I can try to work the metal back into its original shape? How do I remove the door trim?

I would find a paintless dent removal company near you and have them massage out the dent for you, its not alot of money and the results are really good

Yeah I was thinking of just going that route but I was quoted $90 and the thing is so tiny I figured I might as well see if I could fix it myself before I go through with the paintless guys.

I had a small dent in the roof rail on the passenger side that a PDR place took care of for me they had to pull it rather than push it. I thought They did a great job. They were less happy with the result than I was. Got to like that!!! Only charged me $75. they quoted more.

Another vote for a PDR company with a good reputation. Unless you have sufficient training and experience in that field. Otherwise, ignore it.

Got a small ding in the hood early on in my ownership of the car. I'm not obsessive about my car, so I cleaned it up, touched up the paint, and called it good. Certainly won't be the last one I have, especially if I get the itch to take the car off the paved road...

You too, eh? Within the first week of ownership, a suspected acorn (or a small stone) fell straight down onto the hood of my car, leaving a pin-point dent. Can't really notice it with all the road grime on it, but after a wash and from certain angles, it's really noticeable. In fact, you can't even see it from inside the cabin of the car.

I haven't gotten it fixed yet, as I'm waiting for the inevitable "2nd dent" before I decide if I want to take it in for PDR.

It was small enough that the touchup paint very much lessened the appearance of the ding. So it wasn't that big to start with. I know it's there, but most folks aren't gonna notice it unless they get close or really look for it. Knew it would happen sooner or later, now that it's over and done, I'm not so worried about the inevitable 'first ding'. It is what it is...

Indeed. Maybe in a few years, I might trade mine in for a BRZ, and then I won't even have to think it about that dent any more...

True that. But of course then you're gonna be worried about that first ding in the new BRZ...

I got a quote on a small door dent (caused by someone else, unfortunately) and it was $75 PDR with touch-up paint applied, and wet sanding (and free touchup paint for me too).

Just as a price comparison for when you get it done.

My last car, 95 accord, was hit in a parking lot above back tire and there was a fist-sized dent. When i saw it i thought "That son of a... oh well..."

But if that happed to my subie, forget it. Id ask for security tapes and satellite feed.

I also found my first door ding couple months ago. Its tiny but i notice it.

Good luck OP. Lets us know how much they quote you.

I'm getting it done tomorrow. $85 and the guy said he guarantees that it will look exactly as it did off the lot or else he doesn't charge, plus he's coming out to my house. I'm not a huge fan of PDR guys drilling a hole in the bottom of the door to access the inside of the dent, but I guess I'd rather have that then a visible dent.

...drilling..a..hole?!

what the..

Before he comes, try this: get a small plunger, around double the size of the entire dent area. wet it (after the entire area is wiped down clean), and cover the area with the plunger, and create a strong suction. now, carefully but with a bit of strength, pull. It'll be kind of loud probably.

I did that on my door dent and it was at least 45% better. Before your door gets drilled (a scary thought for me) try something like this. If you're comfortable with the drill though, I wish you luck

I wouldn't think a hole would be necessary for a dent in the door. Should be easy enough to access through the window or by removing the interior door trim. I would rather have a dent than a hole in a rust prone area. But if the tech does end up drilling, I would make sure he rust proofs it and plugs in properly. Good luck!

I tried that right after it happened and it did make it a little better but you can definitely still see where the dent is. I'm pretty sure almost every PDR shop around that charges under $100 will drill (if they have to, which largely depends on the location of the dent). Once you start removing interior panels, that $80 job is made into a $200 job. I'm sure this guy will try to remove the dent in whatever way possible without drilling. If he can't get it out then I'm guessing he will drill.

Hold it, if any paintless dent removal company has to drill sheetmetal to fix your door dings - run away! That's the whole point of PDR, they "massage" the sheetmetal to fix minor dents without having to drill, cut, or weld and subsequently having to paint the repair area. That's the "Paintless" part of PDR. BTW, drilling holes is old-school - the newer method is to weld tabs (the actual term for it escapes me) to the exterior sheetmetal for the dent puller to grab on to. They are then ground off afterwards - no holes in the sheetmetal at all.
