filly, thank you for contributing to this thread. can i ask for some clarification:
1. was it hard to remove the pillar cover? did you just use STEye's instruction sheet? did you need to remove it? it sounds like you put the foam tape on the speaker cover, and if so, why is the A-pillar cover removal necessary? (sorry: i'm a very visual person and am puzzled). as i noted in other posts, my solution (which seems to be working, is the keep the pillar cover from rubbing against the window. i think now in hindsight, the cardstock solution is better than the felt circle for appearance purposes. so after another week, i will try to find some white cardstock to replace both the felt circle and yellow parking permit cardstock i am currently using. 2. are you talking about this plastic piece that runs under the base windshield and comes up to just the base of the A-pillar. (ie, it's primarily under the windshield and only slightly comes up the sides of the windshield) the piece i am thinking about also has a circular rivet near the end towards the start of the A-pillar where there is some play...i agree: there is some "give" there and i can get it rattle a fair bit with my hand, especially the passenger side. if i am understanding you correctly, it is worth going out to buy some black foam tape this weekend to try your fix. (i only have some white stuff on hand) i am assuming you just squeeze a thin strip down there and it will hopefully last a while and maybe need to be replaced every few years (assuming that it will probably break down in time.) as i type all of this, i realize that if people are willing (i need to reactivate my flicker account or something else since as far as i can tell, this site doesn't natively host photos attached to these posts), we perhaps could include some pictures of these items to clarify things. not sure you have the time or are willing to make the effort, filly, but if you are, i am sure others would greatly appreciate it. thanks again! 1. To remove the cover from the A-pillar i just pulled on the top of it and it snapped out of place, then i pryed the 2 tabs at the bottom out of place with a screwdriver. When i was done i just wedged the tabs back in place under the speaker and snapped the neon clip back in up top. I would reccomend following STEyes instructions though, they seem a little more comprehensive. I guess in hindsight i didnt NEED to remove the A-pillar cover to get the tape in between the speaker and the A-pillar but having it removed just gave more room to work and i was able to get the tape in nice and low beneath the top of the dash so you cant see it. 2. And yes that is the piece i am talking about (the one with the small plastic rivet near the top). For this i just got my knife blade under it and pryed up on it to wedge the tape under. I'd definitely be willing to put some pics up if you had a spot for them. |

i'm sorry if i wasn't clear: but unfortunately, i don't have a spot to host pictures for this forum. i was referring to the fact that i need to come up with a way to store and broadcast my own photos as i don't have that ability myself at this point. (i know how to do it: either flickr or some picasaweb account, i think would work for free.) anyway, back on track: 1. i think i understand what you did and i guess i can do the equivalent by removing the speaker cover instead. yet, i think we may have different rattles here. i tried putting things "underneath" the A-pillar trim previously and that still didn't solve all of my rattle problems as mine come from the trim rattling against the glass of the windshield. so unless i don't understand your solution (which to me reads: put tons of foam "under" the A Pillar trim), i still would get rattles in my car. my solution, which has worked is to put something between the A-pillar and the windshield itself. on my driver's side, i'm stuffed a felt circle (3/16" thickness) between the two and that has stopped those rattles. on the passenger side, i folded over an old cardstock parking permit several times to the right thickness and stuff thated between the two. both have worked. both are a bit unsightly (the parking permit was yellow!), but seem to have worked after being in place for about a week. i think my prefered solution will be to put a piece of offwhite cardstock in there to match the trim. it's obvious if you are looking, but it blends in better than either of my two solutions. 2. thanks for the clarification. i like that idea. i just need to go buy some black foam tape. what thickness tape are you using? is the high density variety so it gives a little less? of course, i was also thinking i might be cheap and see if i can use a sharpie pen to darken some of my already on hand white foam tape (3/16" thick, i think) and see if that goes in ok and isn't obvious to the casual eye. thanks again! your posts have been very helpful! |

I've done all these and it's still there. I think the rattle is inside the dash under the tweeters.

Rattle updates 3+ months of ownership behind me...
thought i'd check in and hopefully keep this thread alive and hope solutions/fixes continue. for me... - A pillar rattle: seems that it has been solved 99% of the time: i never changed my previous fix: 3/16" felt circle stuffed between the windshield and A-pillar on the driver's side and a folded up parking permit (cardstock) on the other side. i was going to replace both with some white cardstock to better match, but the yellow permit has faded and i'm just too lazy and it has worked pretty well. i also added a piece of black foam tape on the outside 1/4" thick at the location suggested by filly. i sometimes hear a sound (rare) in the driver's side A-pillar near the windshield, but it's my guess that it's something else in the dash expanding/contracting. i can live with this since it seems so rare that it occurs. - center console rattle: again, like all of my rattles: temperature related. this one is annoying when it's there. it seems it is somewhere in the dash computer casing that is expanding and contracting. - steering column panel rattle. as i said before, it's not really the steering column, but something deep in the dash. the good news, which i reported previously, is that it has gone from a "cold temp" phenomenon to a "mid temp" phenomenon. that means i don't hear it during my daily commute to the train station, but more typically as the evening hours cool. it's still annoying, but either i'm getting more used to it or it has gotten quieter, it's less annoying than before. still there but less obvious. - rattle that i thought was from the head rest: i'm pretty convinced that this rattle is coming from the outside trim (where the cross bar mount covers are). there is play in this trim when the car is cool and it goes away when sitting in the sun. my "loose portion is midway between the two doors on the passenger side. i may have the dealer look at it if and when i go in for something else. i'm not sure there is any easy fix for this one. this one goes away after the car warms up and i'm getting better at ignoring it during my morning commute. will the remaining ones get worse or better as the months go on? time will tell... |

sorry to hear STEye. i commiserate. my "near steering column" one isn't even ear level, but it's close enough to be me drive me nuts.
have you been able to isolate it by putting pressure and pinching something in that vicinity when it happens? (be safe doing so! i worry about my own rattle distracted fixing while driving!) |

Mine has been creaking now that the temps have gotten into the low 40's I to believe it is coming from the computer casing. Any resolution on your rattle?

unfortunately, no. not yet. i still want to bring it into the dealer but haven't made the time to do so. my problem still is that it comes and goes with temperature, so it's not necessarily replicable when one wants it to be.

I have a rattle too, it seems to be coming from the driver side speaker grille area, it's an annoying rattle/buzz. Would that be the knee airbag rattle you guys are experiencing?

Whats the best way to remove the tweeter cover on the drivers side? I want to remove it and install foam tape but I am afraid I will break it.
The dealership had my car yesterday and added some foam to the A-Pillar/ tweeter area but there is still a slight rattle coming from there that is now present over any kind of bump in the road. I guess i could bring it back to the dealer sometime next week but then I will be taking yet another day off. So frustrating that this takes away from driving a nice car. |
