Default Need your opinion on Antspec tune

I'm starting this thread without knowing if this even allowed on Nasioc so I will take the hint if MOD delete the thread down the road.

I want to hear your opinion and/or experience with Antspec tuning in Socal. Do you have your subie tuned by Antspec? How do you feel? etc.

My story: I have some good experiences with Antspec this past year for installing some stage 2 bolt-ons, bushing and shifting parts. And I will probably keep coming back. Now for custom tuning, I prefer Phatbotti for the up-coming E85 tune but his Dyno doesn't seem to be fixed anytime soon. Ron offers E-tune on his website but I don't want to go through the hassle of logging/revisions due to my tight schedule, and mostly because I want to see my car strapped on the Dyno.

I want to clarify that Antspec and their employees are cool, this post only meant to gather other's input/review on their custom tuning. Please keep it civil and no bashing, please.

Thank you,
Nhat

Each person will have their own tuning strategies, and thus each tune will be a little unique to its tuner. If you are using Cobb, check to see what their rating is on Cobb's website and if you already know and trust the crew, then go for it! I've had tunes from about 6 different places (a few that were very highly rated, I hated dealing with) and others were a pleasure. This is no black magic, its just a little math and adjusting that math via realtime on the dyno or flashing via road tuning based on the readings from either. If they know their math and can read the tunes, next is how aggressive are they and how much time they dedicate to the tune.

Worst Dyno tune I had lasted like 1 hour on the dyno.. was that even time to get a base map from.. anyway they should put forth some effort to making your tune safe and reliable (chasing numbers is secondary!) and also should listen to suggestions on how you wish to drive / use your vehicle, temperatures and fuels available.

I have a buddy who had his STi tuned at AntSpec, although keep in mind that's an EJ motor and not an FA. He had nothing but good things to say about them. For full disclosure, he did have to rebuild the motor due to ringland failure, but it was pushing 450whp on stock internals and he attributes the failure more to the faults of the EJ motor itself rather than on the tuning.

Similar to you, I've had parts installed at AntSpec, but I haven't been tuned by them so I can't comment on that. I am dyno tuned by Ron and I can tell you without a doubt that he lives up to his reputation and then some. Unless you are in a huge rush to get tuned, I would wait til Ron gets his dyno up and running if you can. And think of it this way: the longer you wait, the more time you have to save $$$ for other parts

Thank you for the inputs. I tent to be extra skeptical on the first time of doing anything. I have most parts and basically a tune is the only thing left to do. I'm not confident running OTS any longer.

@YungBoba: Did your STI friend get the tune before or after the rebuilt? If before, did he still have Antspec retune it?

He was tuned by them before and actually had them do the motor build too, and then tune it after of course. Again, this is someone else's experience and not mine (and also an EJ vs. FA), but he seems to have a great deal of trust in them. The car puts out 400WHP+ now after the new build and tune.

Whoever you do go with, hope things turn out well and be sure to report back with dyno numbers!

Late reply but figured its worth sharing my experience. I was dyno tuned by Antspec 6 months ago. 18 WRX FBO e65, radiator, oil cooler, FMIC ect. Almost everything is upgraded besides the turbo. I was dyno tuned by TuningTech in Colton before Antspec and the subie was running good. Then I added Flex and KillerB headers and went to Antspec this time bcs Phatbotti dyno was down. Right after the Antspec dyno tune I started getting -11.6 knock and DAM drop to .6 so I called them and they said to re flash the tune and let the car learn. After re flashing 3 times I would still get the -11 knocks and dam drop to .6 so the tuner asked for logs and made “adjustments” but I kept getting the same numbers. In the end he said something was mechanically wrong with my car and to fix it bcs their tune is “perfect”. I also didn’t go to phatbotti bcs I wanted a dyno tune and not be loggin for days but I ended up hittin up Phatbotti we started Etuning and the car has been running great every since. I didn’t adjust or change anything at all I left everything exactly how it was bcs I wanted to see if it was the tune causing the issues or something mechanical but it wasn’t. It’s been months since Phatbotti finished my Etune and the subie is running perfect. It will be the biggest waste of 975 in my life lol
