Default Why are asians bad drivers? and other questions here...

I thought it might be interesting to start a thread like this. I'll do my best to answer any questions about asian culture.

Why are asians bad drivers?
The majority of bad asian drivers are immigrants. If you ever visit Taiwan, you'll know why they are such bad drivers. In asia, street signals and laws are "optional". Driving is insane there. You HAVE to drive under the speed limit so you'll have time to avoid people breaking laws on the road. Let me give you an example...
When driving on the highway, we assume people coming from an on-ramp will merge properly into traffic. In Taiwan, many people just bomb onto the freeway, and whoever is on it needs to get out of the way. So, sometimes you see asians slowing down at random times on the roads, and sometimes you see a bomber. That's because they're trying to avoid the random bomber. Hit and runs are very common there. If you park on the street there, dont' be surprised if you have "surprises" waiting for you when you get back. Your car may have dings, or you may be missing a sideview mirror.

Another reason is that many asians (like my parents) are very conservative. They came here for a higher education, so they're kinda nerdy and conservative. My mom takes forever when she's doing any type of reverse manuever. She figures if she takes a little extra time, she might be able to avoid an accident that would cost her a lot of money.

So how do people have nice cars there?
First of all, people who have nice cars there are VERY rich. Taxes on new cars are insane. For example, you can get a new Lexus RX for about 40K. It will cost you more than 65K if you buy it in Taiwan. If you're rich enough to have a car like that, you're also rich enough to have a place to park it. Also, people who are really rich have drivers. It's much more common there than here.

I come from a family of horrible Asian drivers. I probably have my faults as well, but I know these few rules that make me an exception to the rule:

1. I drive over 75 in the far left lane, but only for PASSING.
2. I don't overuse my brakes.
3. I usually know where I'm going so I don't have to suddenly (but slowly) merge into other lanes.
4. I can see over the dash.
5. I was taught to drive by non-Asian instructors.
6. I'm a twinkie: yellow on the outside, white on the inside.

I've always wanted to know more about the naming conventions for Asian names.

In NA, we usually are addressed by given name followed by family name.

But I've noticed that it may not necessarily be the same in Asian countries.

eg:

Kim Il Jong and Kim Il Sung.

I'm assuming that Kim is the family name (father and son).

Also, I receive emails from a friend who is Japanese, and her last name preceeds her first name in the emails. And also when announced during the Pride Fights, the last name preceeds the first name.

I'm guessing that these cultures place more emphasis on family than individuality, and thus the family name are said first?

Whaaaaat's the deal?

Bingo! Would you like a cookie?

But, seriously, the Asian cultures put family above all else. When I am introducing myself to other Asians (well, at least my parents' Asian friends), I will use my last name, then my first name.

Yes, in Asia, family names come first. This is why Yao Ming has Yao on the back of his Jersey, and not Ming.

Yes please. I hear you are a wonderful baker.

Thank you for the confirmation. I have always wondered if that was the case, but I was not quite sure. Now I know, and knowing is......yadda yadda yadda

Hmmm...that sounds like how most of the drivers here in Nashville drive...asian or not.

While we're on the subject, did anyone see the episode of Drawn Together last night? When Capt Hero destroyed the carriage that Princess Clara's friends were driving? and Snow White said, 'we shouldn't have let Mulan drive'

The OP has a very narrow viewpoint and it's sad he doesn't realize it.

For example, I would bet the vast majority of asian families came to the US...NOT for higher education....maybe for their kids, but not the parents usually.

Also, if you go some place in the US we're talking 3rd, 4th, 5th generation ...how are they influenced by how folks drive in Taiwan?

Your attempt at generalization failed in some rgards and you really ought to look outside your immediate family and circle of friends before making generalizations of an entire group of people.

Most of the Ot-ters aren't asian, so you could actually be perpetuating some incorrect generalizations.

I'm on the side that thinks an evolved mind finds patterns in life and learns by them while using wisdom and experience to to make decisions. So I think generalizations have a place of value.

Long post but I just really wanted to say:

why you gotta mis-represent like that?

Not to be racist, but this is racist, i thought blacks were the worst drivers since there are NONE of note in motorsport. Asians at least have F1 and MotoGP secured. I will say though, that whites are the worst drivers in terms of crash statistics.

My parents were sponsored to come to the United States from Vietnam in 1977 by a Catholic organization in Kansas. Their decision to accept this sponsorship wasn't because of education, but for opportunity. My parents didn't come from poor, illiterate families. In fact, my father was college educated in Asia and taught English to Vietnamese students. My mother went to boarding school in Vietnam and learned French and English as well. So, for them, it wasn't about education, but definitely because they didn't want their children to grow up in a Communist country.

I am happy to say myself and my other siblings have all gone to college and are grateful every day that we have had the opportunity to do so.

Another note: There are many perpetuating stereotypes of Asians, but I learned long ago to accept them. It doesn't necessarily mean I tolerate them, but every culture has stereotypes for a reason.

You're right. Part of the explanations are personal. They don't apply to all asians, but then what does. Nothing can apply to an entire race. These are just some explanations, but there are many more. Part of my point is that asians born here drive as well as any other American.

The majority of people here from Taiwan came here for a post-graduate education. It's hard to immigrate legally, and that's one of the most common ways. However, the majority of Koreans I have encountered came here to start businesses. So yes, asians come to the US for many different reasons.

I would hope that the guys on here are smart enough not to assume the general reasons I give apply to all asians. Thanks for your comments.
