Default Steering Rattle ?

Just noticed that when i take a corner "slightly faster than usual" and hit a bump or uneven surface during the turn... there is a weird noise and rattle that can be felt in the steering wheel. its hard to explain ...

this might sound funny ... but if you want to listen exactly to what it sounds like ... simply take a plastic ruller, leaving 3/4 of it on a desk, and slapping the 1/4 that isnt touching the desk. it sounds exactly like that ...

any ideas on the cause of this ??

thanks

Wow I thought I was wierd!

Seriously though, I haven't noticed anything like this. I do notice when I'm going around a turn fast and hit a bump the front wheels will start to spin faster than the rears and the car feels a little jerky for a second until it evens out. I've found that different settings on the DCCD will alter that effect though. Are you talking about that?

Same thing here! Only on uneven or rocky surfaces. It goes away right when things even out.

i ve never took it to a rocky surface.

been on some bad streets tho.. i immediately slowed down and didn't notice anything.

only on 2 occasions where i was pulling into a parking area, the entrance had a very steep rise and followed by a ditch.. i heard noises coming out from the steering, but i assumed that was natural

I notice it all the time and actually posted about this in June.
Member Glenn Wallace mentioned that it was the suretrac making the noise. I question if it really is that. Sounds more like there's something loose.

My 02 WRX does this too. Rattling when turns on bumpy surface. I never found out why.

i totally agree ... it really doesnt sound like a diff sound ... it feels and sounds like its comming from a suspension component. im no expert though, so i could be wrong here.

I haven't noticed that, but I do get an annoying buzzing noise
sometimes while cruising. I found out that it was the cruise
control lever, as when I touch it lightly the noise stops.

Anyone else find this ?

I have the same clunk. It's not because of the mac strut is it?

I have this exact problem/sound!!! I posted a question about this and got bogus replies. It is when hitting a bump or surface irregularity while in the middle of a turn AT SPEED, most often whipping into a parking lot where the ramp is steep, or in the middle of a high speed sweeper where you might hit a recessed manhole cover.

The sound is a loose rattle that transfers through the steering wheel: I can definately feel it. It is not brakes, it might be suspention, but I suspect steering.

HELP!

Ditto! I asked the question of others before without a good reason for it.

I still don't like it...but at least it isn't an isolated condition.

Are we talking about bump steer or just a noise?

No, not bump steer. It doesn't pull the steering wheel, I just feel a rattle through the steering wheel like some suspension component is loose (kind of like if the tolerances were not to spec and there was unwanted movement between 2 parts).

Funny, I put the whitelines in and never noticed it till I did it, very slight rattle when turning. Not over bumps but all the times. Just a slight shimmy in the wheel.

lol...

might be the endlinks then ... i changed the endlinks and the steering rack bushings at the same time... i figured the steering rack bushings would solve the steering rattle ... but it might be the endlinks ... or a combination of both.

Default Cruise Control Button

I found what I called the "cricket" in the steering area. I found the buzing was coming from the cruise control button on the lever. Never had the buzz with the old cruise lever without the button on my MY03.

I put a piece of tape on it for now, but if anyone has a better solution I'd sure like to hear it.
