Default STi ECU (pinging) fix SOA contact?

All,

Has anyone confirmed a contact to verify that Subaru does indeed acknowledge a problem with detonation(pinging) in the STis? And if so, has this information been posted by Subaru anywhere? Is there a number I can call to confirm this?

I would really appreciate this. I am trying to decide what I should do before my car arrives in 2 weeks.

Thanks all!

i thought i didn't have any pinging either till i drove today and at around 3-4k rpm, (supposedly the rpms when you can hear it?), i heard the bb-dropping-in-a-tin-can sound. anyone got a sound clip of this? i jsut wanna verify whether it sounded like the pinging. the dccd makes some weird noises too. it only happened for about half a second. i thought it was on vishnu's site but i couldn't find the link. thanks

yes it does sound like that and dccd will make some clunking noises occasionally. mine pinged anywhere from 3800-5000 most often with WOT. I was running 93 and it still did it. I have had the car back for about 2 weeks now...no pinging!

So does anybody have an SOA contact...

Dealership service department "has had people looking into it" for the last 4 weeks. Can anyone help them find this contact?

Yes it's true that I don't have the car yet, but the concern is that I'm still in a position to deny the car if there is a wide spread known problem that I don't want to deal with. Plus there are many places that don't have 93 octane, so I would like to just get used to using one type of octane, ie Cheveron 91. It has already been recommended by the deal to use one type of gas and stick with it, because the car 'learns' to deal better with that particular gas and the type of additives the company puts in.

You will also find fuel system engineers who strongly recommend cycling your gasoline brand. They suggest that one company's additives may be effective against one set of grimies, while another set works better against another group of contaminants.

Opinions are like....uhh.... noses, we all have one.

If you're just taking delivery of your car now, chances are it's already got the updated ECU. I got mine in Early August (build date 06/03) and it hasn't pinged once, and believe me I know what it sounds like. I had an older BMW that would ping like a mofo when the timing wasn't set right.

On the contrary, I bet a lot of owners wouldn't recognize it.

Took delivery 8/15, just finished the breakin miles with zero ping. Changed the oil and started running it a little harder. Gues what as the boost builds so does the detonation. Driving with the drivers window down, run 2nd up to about 5500 and all is well. Shift into 3rd and run it up to 5500 and the detonation is just starting. Imediately back off and ease into 4th. Sucks!

Thanks drdray! Taking mine in next Monday for reflash, they'll provide me a loaner car for no more than 3 days... bad omen?

It pings most of the time while crossing the 4000-4500 rpm band, after that I can't hear it. I live in hot/humid texas and run on chevron 93 octane.
