STi vs. 99-01 SVT Cobra ride quality...
I'm wondering, anybody have driven or owned both? I'm wondering of the ride quality and comfort of the STi vs. the SVT Cobra... I tried a STi but I don't have my SVT anymore for a year and a half to make the comparaison. Anybody made this kind of switch?
Thank's, Sylvain

Well, I have a 98 Cobra, which doesn't have the independent rear suspension that the 99-up does, but I can compare the STi to it.
I've had the STi for 2 weeks now. I didn't drive the Cobra since I got the STi until yesterday when I had to run to the parts store in mid-oil change. In comparison to the STi, the Cobra feels like I am driving with boxing gloves and ski boots on. There is waayyy more feedback through the steering and pedals in the STi, the STi doesn't get upset over pavement bumps as easily as the mustang, and it is easier to drive fast. As far as ride quality goes, the STi is definitely stiffer than the mustang, but that may be partially due to the fact that the mustangs suspension has 5 years of wear on it. In terms of overall comfort, I have to go with the STi. The seats in the STi are better, and I can get into a much more comfortable driving position in the STi. There isn't enough leg room for me in the mustang (I'm 6'1" and have long legs). I didn't realize how much I was "crunching up" my legs to fit into the mustang until I got back into it after the STi. In defense of the mustang, it is easier to launch than the STi, at least for me. Maybe with practice in the STi I'll get better. |

I will let you know when my STI gets here in a couple of weeks. I'm trading an '01 Mustang Cobra in on it.

I drove a STi two weeks ago (was the 2nd time I was driving a STi) and reminds me that the ride is a rough one and the performance are faboulous. Either with the minimal turbo lag, I prefer a V8 to a turbo engine and will now officially wait and get the V8 S4 (either if it's a fat expensive pig). I also extensively test drove the new S60r, not bad at all and the turbo lag is also minimal in this car but still there so I decided to wait and test drive the S4 to see if it fits my needs or not.

150 Mile Review Comparo to Cobra
A couple of weeks turned into a couple of months. But, the wait was worth it. I traded my 01 Cobra in on an STi. There is no comparison. The handling is much better in the STi. Curves, that would have you concentrating in the Cobra, are just conversation pieces in the STi. Where the clutch was heavy in the cobra is nice and smooth in the STi. I thought the 32valve cobra engine was smooth, the STi is smoother. It felt like the V8 engine was really going beserk, whereas the STi spins effortlessly. I don't know why people are complaining about the tranny. It is much better than most. No trouble finding any gears, shorter throw than the cobra. (I always seemed to have to reach to get into 5th.)
When I got the Cobra, I was impressed with it. I drove it 40,000 miles in all kinds of weather. I took on open track days and usually was first or 2nd fastest. (Damn GT2 porches and Z06's!) I went through 5 sets of pads and 3 sets of tires if that tells you anything. I honestly think this car imbues the driver with the confidence and security to take his abilities to the next level, especially in adverse weather conditions. Good Luck! -Ex-Naturally Aspirated |

I have ordered the S4 and should be getting her near the end of october. I will meet MontrealSTi when I'll get the car and will make a "real" objective comparo between the two on the track. For sure the S4 is a heavy pig but I test drove the S4 last week in Lake George and fits my needs better than the STi. I wanted a "stealth" car so I would have changed the trunk lid, remove the STi pink stickers so getting the S4 will be right of the box. Oh yeah, in 99, we had bought 2 SVT Cobra and my friend still have it and I drove it this week when going in a meeting and the Cobra is a rough ride!!

The S4 is one nice car. Front and rear Recaros with alcantra finish on the seats is sure beautiful. The way I look at is that the S4 is an uper class super comfortable quick car, where the STi is more of a track car. Either way I would be happy.
