Budget Rally Car?
I have a RS but I don't wanna go to crazy with it with mods and driving. So I was thinking it would be wise to have an extra car on hand anyway and have nu rules on what I do to it. So I started my hunt a while ago but I havn't found a combo I really like maybe some of you can help. I will list the cars I have came across and whats good about tham but at the same time why they wouldn't get them:
Mazda 323 GTX 1.8 Turbo 4WD w/ Locking Diff! Great but with only 1800 made they are hard to find not impossible but hard and the 4wd drive train parts I think could be an easy nightmare. Galant 4wd Turbo Great car ugly but great 210 HP 4wd. The main things I don't like is the exterior looks and the weight I think is 3500 lbs or so Ouch! Also a big concern will be price I think the last I checked the cheapest I saw was around 5500. I wanna spend 2000 max and do repairs and mods myself to save money. Also another car that caught my eye was that Suzuki rally car I dunno if it was in in the us or not. I think it was used in Pike's Peak and HPI Racing makes an R/C car of it I will post a pic if I find one. I was at first limiting myself to AWD/4WD cars and the reason for this is I don't know how good and fun a fwd or rwd car would be. I was thinking fwd drive would be great for ebrake turns and all but how they act on dirt I don't know. With RWD cars I think they would be real fun sliding and drifiting through corners but I wonder if traction would be a huge issue? Well thats my ideas and thoughts please post what you think and/or suggest I look into. Thanks, John EDIT: This car would be nice (Old Audi) but look at the price are they all this expensive for this model/year? http://www.suninternational-usa.com/audisales.html [This message has been edited by MichiganRS (edited April 02, 2001).]

Um, there are some old 93-95 Impreza's that run in the 2-6k range depending on the specific car... Thats probably your best bet still!

the Escudo ? it's built on the Grand Vitara's chasis if i'm not mistaken..
day and night difference there.. wouldn't try to put one together myself.. hahaha you have a better chance to make the RS imi-22B than the vitara->escudo I think the 323GTX is a pretty neat little car that goes fast.. and it's cheap(if you find one that is) ! there was a sleeper GTX when i was at Thunderbird rally, it runs 6s 0-60 An old golf isn't too bad either, even though it's FF but in gravel/snow the slide can be easily induced(usually happens when you don't want to but hey, made my point ) |

And old Golf is a good choice, so is a Datsun 510 or an old Corolla (one of the RWD ones). First Gen RX-7 another good one. All of these cars are plentiful, easy to fix, and best of all CHEAP.

Don't knock FWD. Jon Nichols could run top-5 in any rally in North America in his Golf. And former SCCA Production and PDT champ Cal Landau set some stage times in his 130HP Golf that he never did beat in his 270HP PGT Talon.
And Andrew Havas demonstrated at Cherokee Trails how fast an old RX7 can go. It's really a question of what you like to drive. If you really like AWD, you could do a lot worse than an old Impreza for just starting out. Plus you can get Subaru contingency money. |

MichiganRS - i presume you mean a car for ProRally, or are you still talking TSD events?
if ProRally... you r best bet to get a rally car that is affordable is to buy a used Group 5 car, not AWD but you don't want to be in on eof the AWD classes anyways, the competition is too stiff and they cost too much to fix. If you go to that TSD school ask around, someone will be able to hook you up with a seller.. but expet to pay more than $2000... there is no way you'll have a car that can even make it through a rally for that... |

Yeah, you don't really need an AWD car if you are on a budget. The GTXs are sooo rare, as are the VR4s. If I had a VR4 I would not demolish it by rallying it. Same if I had a Celica All-Trac - I would keep that sucker shiny!
Just get a reliable car with good cooling, light weight, and a good amount of suspension travel. As mentioned, perhaps the only common US chassis which has won real rallies at the top level is the A2 VW Golf. You could look for an old Impreza AWD, but the golf is so much more simpler. |

The suzuki you posted about is a tube frame built custom racer with a Grand vitara copycat body put on top. There is no production vehicle that this really represents.

If you're the highest finishing Subaru in a ProRally in a new WRX, you get $2,250.00. That's highest finishing Subaru, even if you come in 30th OA. Not too bad, especially when you see all the ProDrive cars DNFing. |

Go to Ben's Rally Page , scroll down and click on N.A. Rally Cars For Sale. It's much cheaper to buy a built rally car than to attempt to prep your own. Good luck!

Or.. a bit of inspiration hit on the way home from ratshack today... you could use an old turbo shadow... wouldn't be half bad.

I'd go with a 323GTX, or a older Volvo Turbo. Volvo's last forever and you should be able to find readily available parts...

Ebay its always fun. You can find a talon or eclips cheep if you dont mind working on it.. usaly its the interer and bented bodys. I worked at a mistu dealer and the AWDs were hard to kill. |

I liked the Sports Compact Car article on beater rally cars from last month. It gives some good ideas on search criteria. If I were going to build a rally car on a budget I would look for cars that had very high production numbers, descent aftermarket support, and rear wheel drive (AWD too expensive, FWD not enough fun). Some one already mentioned the 1st gen Rx-7, any of the late 70's Toyota Corollas or Celicas would be good, Datsun 510's are a little harder to come by but there are a lot of cross compatible parts from other model Datsuns, and here's one that nobody has mentioned yet... the VW bug. It doesn't have the best suspension design, but they are durable, and simple. And how many beetles did they make? About a billion? Talk about cheap parts.....
Anyway those are the cars I would think about if I were on a budget. If I had a little more money I would get a 2.2L AWD Impreza. Or start out with an older FWD Impreza chassis and swap in the AWD drivetrain and what ever engine you wanted (1.8, 2.2, 2.5) out of a wrecked car. Good luck |

NEVER build a race car.
If Eric had to rebuild the BMW rally car....it would cost well up into the high 20's. he bought the car for about half that. sjd |

I had an 87 gl wagon with 225K on it and it still runs so I wouldn't have any problem still driving it. That car would be a blast to rally. Too bad its in Colorodo.
