The inside of my wrx has a very strong smell of gas. I was wondering if it has anything to do with the bov because it sits right on top of the engine. I also have a turbo back exhaust system so could that be part of the issue? Are there any other factors that could lead to this like a fuel line leak and would i still be under that free fix from the dealer? I just bought this car and i need it to be inspected soon so a quick reply would be great. Thanks.

If you can smell raw fuel there is fuel leaking somewhere, just have to find it. BOV, exhaust, none of that has anything to do with the fuel system. Inspect all of the fuel lines and fittings that you can see. If you have an 02-07 pay special attention to the rubber hose between two metal lines at the front of the motor by the intake manifold.

Thanks for the reply i will look into that. I do have another question because when coming to a stop the car likes to stall and i was wondering if giving the mass air flow sensor a clean would solve that problem or cleaning out the iac or the throttle body would help.

Certainly couldn't hurt things.

It's unlikely that the fuel leak is a result of the problem that was/is the subject of the recall, because that leak happened in cold temps -- generally well below freezing.

I first noticed mine leaking when it was 7 degrees outside and very windy.

I have an 07 sti w/194k and the raw gas smell has started getting stronger. I took the car to the dealership and they performed a smoke test. The tech noted that smoke was coming from someplace on top the fuel tank and recommended changing both roll over valves and vent valve. Does/did anyone have experience with this issue and fixed it themselves? Any tips and/or part numbers? Was it a hose or clamp failing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Let's continue this 2002 thread into 2018!

Not that it gets that cold here in Phoenix but my 03 WRX has begun to have the raw gas smell problem after about 1 mile of driving on a cold (35F) morning. Problem goes away later in the day and I don't smell it at all driving home when it is 65-70F. Time to check some hoses and clamps.

Thanks to all who keep this site up and running. I've only had my bugeye a few months now and this place has helped immensely. Just about to turn 180K miles.

You won't be able to get to the problem clamps without removing the intake manifold which is a royal PITA on a car this old. Prepare to break plenty of hard lines, clips, etc.

On my wife's non-turbo Forester all clamps are fairly easy to get to.

What Superorb said.

IIRC, SOA allowed ~6-1/2 hours for the job, and my understanding is that it usually took longer -- and that was for a factory trained Suby tech.

Not trying to discourage you, just giving you a heads-up.

If you rarely drive in the cold it may not be worth doing the repair -- at least not at this time.

Default WRX Fuel Line Leak Recall In Australia for WRX MY02

I have recently encountered this issue in the Australian market. But Subaru Australia and Subaru Docklands isn’t taking in accountability despite the incident as of a result of the fuel line leak recall. On the weekend my car started emanating smoke which drew my attention hence had to pull over park, then upon opening the bonnet the engine Bay Area where the fuel line leak recall had burst into fire. I had to put this out luckily with 1litre of distilled water I had which extinguished the flames before the fire brigade came to my rescue.

Had this issue on my 08 STI. See the video above. I know there were several people in here with 08 and above WRX/STI that had this issue. Well this turned out to be my issue. Started happening this winter and was only noticeable upon startup and then would go away. Especially with the heater on when the car first turned on, raw fuel was obvious.

It was a clamp on the right side of the engine toward the right fuel rail. There is a rubber hose that connects a fuel line the to the left side fuel rail. This hose turned out to be the issue. Simply tightened down this clamp and the problem went away.
