The only other thing that I can say is that tacomas hold their value abnormally well, and the same cannot be said for tundras. Most of the 2-3 year old tacomas that I looked at before we bought new were at most, 2 grand less than new. Many of them were actually more than what I paid for my new one.
i know a truck is always a depreciating expense rather than an true asset BUT, retaining value is always a good thing. you'd be hard pressed to find another truck that retains value as well that isn't diesel.
Trust me, not much feels as big as that lumbering F250. I hate driving that truck. The Tundra drove alright though I could really feel the add'l length compared to my 4Runner. It is true what they say about it feeling better loaded than unloaded. You could tell the rear end was pretty stiffly sprung. The 4.6L hits the sweet spot, IMO, of fuel economy and power. The 310hp w/ the 4.100 gears moves it very well.

Originally, he was planning on keeping his F250 for hauling duty and replace his commuter truck, a 1995 S10, w/ a Tacoma. He was pretty dead set on the V6 6MT combo, but it gets pretty horrendous mileage (18MPG). I said that was kind of silly and that he should replace both trucks or the big truck , since it is worth ~$15k and he never drives it... 43k miles in 7 years. The problem is the horse trailer. He has a 3 horse trailer that they typically carry 2 horses in. The weight will be right at the Taco's towing limit w/ 2 horses. They tow the horses so rarely, though, that it might not be an issue. That is the only reason I think he should seriously consider the Tundra... along with the fact that it gets better mileage than the 6MT V6 Taco.

I think that the Tundras will end up holding their value pretty well in the long run. The 3 year dependability study for the current gen tundra had it highest ranked for reliability despite the teething issues of the first model year. But, regardless, he's 52 and I don't see him getting anything new for 10 years. At that point, resell is kind of a moot point.

The final thing is the pricing. I was quoted the following:
Tundra 4.6L TRD Offroad: $28k
Tacoma 4.0L 6MT TRD Offroad & tow package: $27k

Here is the Tundra in question. I really like the color. The timberline that the Taco comes in is quite good too.

Oh yeah, talking about depreciation. I got printouts for a Taco TRD offroad and a Tundra TRD offroad. The sticker price on the Tundra is $4000 higher. The residuals for leasing after 3 years are exactly the same. My dad wouldn't lease, but those residuals should be an indicator of expected depreciation for someone that would sell a truck they owned. If you aren't sure how long you'll own the vehicle, the Taco is definitely a safer bet.

if he's towing a horse trailer, get the tundra.

The taco won't do it. tail wagging the dog scenario would be 100% certain.

thats a pretty great price on the tundra as well.

when i drove the tundra it felt like sailing a 3 mast ship.
It kind of felt ( size wise) like an 80 series landcruiser with a bed on the back.

Then again, the most i tow is a small car on a light trailer, so the tundra was complete overkill.

the taco tows the car, gets the mulch, hauls the dogs and still fits down the trail to our cabin.

Picked up this beauty on Wednesday. 130,000 miles, 5-speed, $1500. Already moved a fridge and a shelf, which is still in there obviously.

I has a big jealous.

22RE? What year?

Also, I have no qualms with Tundras being included in the thread. As long as you battleship operators realize your behemoths are no match for our prerunning abilities.

Had a 2008 Taco before I got the Legacy. Never had any mechanical issues but it was full of rattles by 30000 miles and the worthless dealers and the even more worthless customer support line wouldn't do a damn thing to make it right. It was a decent truck but I won't be going back to Toyota anytime soon.

I owned two tacomas before my last two tundras, can I play? 2010 TRD Rock Warrior Edition. Have had it a little over a year and have right at 10K miles. Love the way it drives and handles, and the 5.7L makes my pants tight. The 6 speed coupled with that motor makes for a very refined yet powerful package. Hand calculate mileage every fill up and its between 15-16 mpg with city driving. Have had the common Air Induction Pump problem with mine, as well as another emission valve in the exhaust that clogged with ice this past winter causing another CEL. Overall am happy with the truck now that the problemes seem to be worked out and the dealership (Kendall Toyota) has been very good to me.

Sorry for the craptastic phone pic but this was first day i got it, debadged it later that day but dont have any decent debadged pics.

I love Tacomas, but they will be a death trap trying to haul horses around. Plus, the size difference between a 250 and a Tacoma is just stupid. I didn't end up with a Tacoma almost entirely because the cabin is too small for my liking. If he is used to the extra space, it would be a rough transition.

Nevermind. Looks like if I want a relatively new Japanese SUV with a manual, it's gotta be an Xterra.

Toyota fixed the airbag cel problem I mentioned in r0bman's thread last week. No charge even though my truck is no longer under warranty.

Quick question for all the Toyota truck owners in here. On Wednesday when I bought the truck (1994 Pickup 4x4) it was fine. The next morning the CEL came on. Drove it to work and halfway there it went off. The next day, no CEL. Halfway to work it comes back on? Repeat until today. Is this something I should be worried about? Like I said before, the truck runs beautifully.

i'd guess you have a clogged egr port or non toyota o2 sensors in the truck.

Next time it pops on, you can use a paperclip to pull the code and look it up.
