same tire thread all around for AWD?
Hey, i have a 2007 Ram 4x4 and when i got it the dealer told me not to put the truck in 4x4 if the tire thread on the back was lower or higher then that on the tires on the front...or vise versa, so my question is this, does the same apply to these impreza's where they are AWD?, you should have the same tire thread siza all around or else damage will occur?
Thanks, Trent

Yep, all four tires should be the same with nearly identical tread depth. Otherwise you risk damaging the differentials.

Yes, definitely have the same size tire with similar tread left. You can kill your center diff if you don't. That's one reason why rotating your tires is important. For the same reason, make sure to never have the car towed with just 2 wheels.

If its a part time 4wd system, its not meant to be used all the time. This means you should only use 4wd when you are on loose surfaces. You are NOT going to damage your diffs on loose surfaces if your tire tread isnt the same with a part time system...

We are on our 9th Subaru. All of them AWD. All tires should be of equal diameter, hence the importance of rotation.
I have had several trucks (Dodges, Chevys, Fords, Toyotas and Nissans) with part time 4wd. A 4x4 part time system, as gto7419 states, should only be engaged on 'loose' road surfaces such as snow, ice, gravel or dirt. Definitely not on dry pavement. Trent, other than ground clearance, you will probably find the AWD Subie to be superior in most of the 'loose' that people drive in on the road (compared to a part time 4wd system like the typical pickup has). |
