Tuning advice needed, Dyno or E-tune?
Looking for some help from the forums on deciding where I should get my 2006 WRX tuned. I'm getting my WRX back from the shop later today (blew cylinder 3 ring and got a new longblock) and I am looking to get a tune (just running 3in catted dp, hks catback, IAG Street AOS, Grimmspeed intake and cobb 3 port EBCS) and I live in a pretty rural area where I haven't found a whole lot of subarus, however, about a 4 hour drive from me is the only AWD dyno in Atlantic Canada, Symmetrical Autoworks. I was just wondering if anyone on here has any experience with them or knows if they're a reliable tuner, or if I should seek out an E-Tuner like Bren or Phatbotti?

the only one on your list i'm familiar to is phatbotti, and i think that's mikey botti if i'm not mistaken. he does well. youll need a base map to drive out to the dyno. honestly if you have a flat straight strech of road you will be fine with an e-tune. it's just doing a pull while logging, emailing, tuner adjusts, sends new map. and you do that over and over till it's tuned perfectly. a dyno just does it on a simulated load with the tuner there in person.
honestly provided you have a good tuner, either one will work just fine. |

Reach out to phatbotti(Ron Watson) first since he doesn't e-tune EJ's anymore, but let him know you have a wideband installed. He stopped because no one wanted to get a wideband. Sti Mikey (Mikey Botti) is also a great tuner. And i would also recommend Eric minehart with torqued performance. He e-tuned me after phatbotti canceled my pro tune appt and closed his dyno ):

E tune over dyno anytime of the day. Anyone who says otherwise does not understand what a dyno is or is concerned about safety (doing pulls on street or hwy.)
Mikey will make you more power than Ron but Ron won't tune EJs. I am not sure Mikey will e tune EJ either. |

There are definite real world benefits to both a dyno tune and a road tune and honestly the best tunes are usually a combination of both where the dyno is used for steady state load tuning that is impossible to do on the street, and the road tuning is used to dial in real world changes after it's pulled off the dyno.
Phatbotti should be able to E-tune your car for you no problem but dynos do have their benefits. |

No one is developing tunes dude. They flash a base and refine it UNDER REAL WORLD conditions (read real world load) in e tuning on street pulls.
On dyno the machine is trying to replicate the above, ie real world. In this case study it is actually detrimental or counterproductive is a better word, to refine a street car on the dyno. In a case study where a new tune is being developed, yes dyno makes it a whole lot easier and safer. But we are talking etunes here on tunes that have been developed and refined 95% before being flashed to your car. I have had Ron among others tell me that he prefers to finish the car on the street. ****, i wonder why. Perhaps cuz it will be driven on the street rather then on a dynamometer in a cell. |

And for cars with varying mods, the tunes won't be identical and calibration on the dyno is beneficial. Last edited by K3rm1tth3fr0g; 05-02-2021 at 12:43 PM. |

I don't know how far you are from Nemesis Performance but that's a good place for a tune in Canada. Justin, the owner, is very knowledgeable on Subaru tuning.

Seek out an established tuner over dyno tune and get an etune in real world conditions. 2-6000rpm 3rd gear pulls. I would use vd for before and after to see gains, use same patch of road same direction.
I gained 90whp between my 91oct tune and e50 conservative daily map. |

A lot of tuners can't convince people that they really need a wideband O2 sensor. I can tell you from tuning mine that it's absolutely critical!

I've e-tuned all my cars I've tuned. Even my 900rwhp mustang was etuned and it was a good experience as you log over multiple days and revisions instead of on a dyno in a short session.

I think it’s E85 where the dyno helps dial in spark, also speeds up speed density ve tuning but everything but E85 timing I can do on the road with enough log/process/log

You’re talking about development. These tuners have maps developed 95% of the way, they flash it, run the log on dyno to tweak afr as per corrections, maybe tweak ign and boost 1deg up or down until knock happens. Its not like they set loads to find timing for each car and rpm range. It is not truly a custom tune because it isnt developed for each car from scratch so to speak. Its just custom refined 4-6 times bringing down error/correction to an accepted standard/tuner happy.
