I really thought they were closer inside to the minivans, but I guess not.

Expedition/Tahoe are only slightly larger (210" length), but still can't compare with cargo (100-120).

I owned an Express 2500 for a while. The idea of a full size van is funner than the reality. I doubt the driving dynamics have improved, especially for the tall boys. The added height also gives you the added bonus of not being able to use parking garages or most drive-thrus.

But you won't have to worry about headroom!
Yeah, I hear you regarding the idea of full size vans versus reality. After all, I did drive a Transit 12 passenger low roof for a week when visiting my parents a year or two ago due to an Enterprise mixup. It was honestly pretty bad in non-Ecoboost, low-roof, all-rows-installed form.

I get nervous even in the Land Cruiser in some garages, even with 4-5” of nominal clearance.

Get what you want and park it outside.
It’s my game, I’ll make up arbitrary rules!

My work parking garage that took me something like 2 years to get a spot in only has inside spots. Well, there’s the roof, but one has to navigate the interior of the garage on all the floors to get there so that doesn’t help. I’d have to downgrade to a surface lot a significantly longer distance away from my building, and I try to separate my exercise and walking-from-car activities.

this breathing detection tech - is relatively cheap - like $20 in parts.

Assuming they use millimeter wave radar.

Why would you be bringing it to work anyway? Isnt it a camping/skiing vehicle that fits your family? They dont go to work with you and you certainly cant ski at work.

Clearly you're not someone who parks in a garage.

Could get the Transit people carrier for carrying people, can be a doctor and buy a Boxter/Cayman/Tesla Roadster to commute in.

But what if the rear passenger isn't breathing? Then the system just knows it already doesn't matter?

i have a 3 car garage, so i understand the need but its not going to be his daily.

Not getting what you want because you put stupid restrictions on your purchases is dumb. Not being able to afford something is a reason to not get it, not fitting a van in your garage when you have a driveway is dumb. its essentially a work vehicle, no one should give a ****.

It's alloying that the interior door handle on the Accord isn't a pocket so you can't leave stuff in there. Took a while to notice and it is supremely annoying...definitely a deal breaker!

Why is he considering Transit van? What did I miss? My very catholic nephew has one for his wife and eleventeen kids, but not sure why anyone else would own one other than work purposes.

My summary:
Vans are his jam
Awd not present in his current van
LC is too small
Foreseeing lots of trips to/from new mountain house
Van would be very good as a ski vehicle considering lots of space to stand up, change to ski gear, whatever and you could even get fancy with some small improvements - pizza oven and generator for lunches? Built in fridge?

I totally get the garage thing. It’s not incredibly annoying to park outside here in CO but it sure would be nice to load gear/kids out of weather and without having to clean the van off of snow (albeit occasionally) when preparing to leave after school Friday afternoon. Also being able to pull the van inside Sunday evenings is a benefit as you don’t have to immediately unload everything. I don’t like leaving anything valuable in my car if it’s outside - residual habit from living less suburby places but still a good habit.

Chances of me getting a van are about as high as chances of me getting an F-350 DRW with the 7.3 and a camper shell: as near 0% as is possible.

But I do love to dream about vans and such things.

My guess for the garage we'll end up with 5 years from now:

her: PacHy replaced by a VW ID Buzz, AWD big battery version, when they finally ship in 2024, later than promised because of course

me: Still the Land Cruiser because I do need to be able to get to work come hell or high water, and an AWD minivan like the Sienna even on Nokians potentially could be a liability. The LC's interior volume constraints will be much less of a pain once the kids are bigger and thus in smaller kid-seat-hardware, plus all the ski gear save for possibly mine (for midweek skiing) will live at the Mountain House.

You could put your oldest in a booster seat before she is 16 to free up a little width when running 3 across in the back of the LC.

With the rear-facing baby in a Britax Advocate on one side and the near-6 year old on the other she finds it tough to get buckled on her own in her booster so it's not really better, actually.

(She could go to the 3rd row but then access is a pain, since the 6 and 2 year olds are ideally at the edges of the car, thus blocking the folding/tumbling seat, since neither can at least reliably buckle themselves in.)

As far as I can tell, only the Express 1500 was offered with AWD. The 1500 was discontinued in 2014, leaving only the 2500 and 3500 in RWD only.

Besides, old school vans with that huge center bump out and old-ass dash layout and the like just aren't attractive. (It would fit into my garage, though, as would the awkwardly-proportioned low roof Transit.)

Esther is out of the high back; just the standard booster now. The shoulder belt falls right on her shoulder and her head is square against the headrest so I’m comfortable with it. She is 52”, 55lbs.

With the Sienna and Pacifica both offering AWD I feel Kia is missing the boat here.

They're targeting the remaining few
"I really really want a minivan, but make it not look like a minivan. Make it look like a truck or something; but be sure it has all the minivan stuff. I don't want a Sienna, Pacifica, or Odyssey- They look like minivans."
