Not much these days. I do have a a weather station and cam that updates to the computer frequently, but that's handles either via USB or Wifi. Wife and I mostly surf on our phones and tablets, but will still use the desktop on occasion. I don't like laptops much, mostly the keyboards, but I suppose I could get a full keyboard add-on.

Do you want a gaming rig or just a general usage aside from gaming rig?

I use my PS3 for gaming and don't do much of that anymore, so desktop computer can be general use, but I don't want to skimp on weak or suspect components. SSD would be nice, USB3.0, decent graphics. thanks.

What do you need decent graphics for if it's general use? Just buy a chromebox and call it a day.

Find a bundle built around a AMD APU and add a SSD. That will be the cheapest option.

I bought a Samsung 840Evo last year and used their software to pull the OS image and a few other things from my 1TB spinning disk. Works perfectly fine. And that HDD was a stupid combo of 2 partitions and random install paths. (All my fault)

Here are the pictures from the website. I can't get my monitors to line up (even height). It pisses me off.
That's gladiator joe I think. i mentioned him in my previous post. Yes, it takes some work to get them straight. That, and finding something to fit in between the screens to make them not grind the glass together is fun. I used a combination of doublesided (red back) 3m tape and bump stops for laptop screens.

Yeah that's the vendor... Yeah if I had to do it over again I would have not bought the dual monitor stand + mounts..

Okay, I need some advice about getting a new laptop.

I have a 5 year old dell laptop that I received as a gift. It has started to go downhill and I have had to replace little thing here and there and it's getting not as reliable. I only use it for typing papers and surfing the web. I use power point and things like that.

I have been looking at the MacBook Air 13in 128gb model which would cost me $1035. I have looked at those because it light, small, very portable and seems easy to use. Also, a lot of people at school recommended it

I have also looked at some PCs like HP and Aces or whatever BestBuy carries. It seems like I could get a decent one for around $700. These are non SSD and just the regular drives ( sorry don't know a lot about computers). THe SSd ones are closer to 850 and up.

I was wondering what you guys think between the Mac and the PC. The big thing to me seems like the price. I could get a regular laptop for about 650 and the Mac would be about 1035.

Any help would be appreciated

I spent less than $1035 and got more screen, a decent video card for gaming, 16 gigs of RAM, and a good i7. Oh, and it has 1080p, though no SSD.

What I'm saying is that $1035 seems like a lot to me for what a MacBook Air can do. I don't keep up with technology/prices when I'm not getting ready to make a purchase though.

I have a macbook air. Owned it for coming up on two years now. I love it for the most part, it has failed on me twice, had to get the logic board replaced twice, second one was covered my first replacement warranty. Money for money it probably doesn't stack up pure hardware wise to pc's, but it's been trouble free other than those aforementioned issues. The SSD really speeds things up, and the battery life is nice although mine has decreased significantly since new.

For general computing purposes, the macbook does great, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.. (I was going through laptops every year before I bought this air, so the extended life is nice)

From the standpoint of someone who knows nothing about computers and just wants something simple to do basic **** on, just get the Macbook if you can afford it.

Honestly, it's a god damn travesty that manufacturers think they can charge anything more than about $12 for a computer lacking a SSD. The prebuilt rigs at Best Buy are overpriced to a point where even someone who claims their time is worth $100 per hour comes out ahead building their own.

My lenovo Yoga 11s with core i5 and 128gb SSD was $800 a year ago, metal construction, touch screen, convertible. The thing is awesome. It sucks that they went away with the metal construction and my laptop is somewhat of a unicorn now. Macbook air is nice, but I dont feel it really justifies its price when you look at some of the other computers around it.

This is what I would go look at and see if you like, probably the closest to the Air really. Core i5, 1080p IPS display, 8 gb ram.

I had the genius idea to set up the 500GB drive I have laying around and try to install my entire Steam library to it.

Apparently I have about 800GB worth of games, not <500, and now I need a 1TB to go with it.

Received my 980 today

Heres a comparison between a 770, 780 and 980. All done in my rig.

GTX 770 Firestrike, stock speeds

GTX 780 max overclock

GTX 980 Stock

GTX 980 at 1455Mhz

So worth the near two month wait and $17 bucks

When I was shopping for a laptop or hybrid type about a year ago, the lenovo was the best value for performance, build quality and support. The made my previous high end HP and previous to that the several dell pos machine look like toys. 3 months ago I bought another, more basic lenovo for the wife. Both have been flawless for what we use them for. I tote mine back and forth from my shop every day, using it to do anything from email to generating invoices, researching regulations, etc and it often sits on top of my toolbox so I have quick access to resources and procedures without having to carry and flip through several paper manuals. I also use it for multimedia and streaming video, Chromecast, etc. The wife uses hers for school/teaching stuff which is mostly office and web based applications and some classroom teaching aid stuff. The compromise between durability, reliability and performance is great.

I would never consider an apple laptop for the $.

Looking at the comparable things Idk if there is a difference. The example that I quoted in these replies has a computer but it's only $100 cheaper. I think it's a more powerful machine though. I am worried about viruses which I seem to get a lot

it looks nice and is right up there in price with the mac. It is actually thinner though which is cool.

They are pretty pricey. I didn't know Lenovo was a good brand so I skipped over looking at those

Lenovo is a solid brand, actually they sell more computers then anyone does. The reviews on the one I linked are good. Viruses arent really too much of an issue as long as you do a scan every now and then. I download stuff all the time, from potentially shady places and never run into any major issues.
