It's on sale for $20 on UHD BR at best buy this weekend. Planning on picking it up. As soon as I get this bad boy installed and calibrated, I'm breaking it in with Saving Private Ryan on UHD BR with the Atmos mix

The VTF-3 Mk5HP from Hsu Research. I couldn't pass up the spring sale price and it'll be a significant performance increase from the VTF-2 Mk4 it's replacing. Frankly, it's a beast.

Maybe someone here has a good explanation for this.

I bought the Starwars TLJ in 4K. Watched the movie in 4K HDR yesterday and its awesome. Theater quality at home.

Today I decided to put the BR version to compare. Video wise, the 4K wins. BR looks brighter, but 4k HDR has better colors, including better darker colors, less noise, and more detail.

Audio, I got an LG player connected to the TV via HDMI, which is connected to the Harman Kardon SB26 soundbar via ARC.
Dolby Digital 7.1 (the 4k sound track) sounded great.
DTS did not work at all (the BR sound track).

LG player is set to Dolby output. The BR and 4K both sound if I selected PCM output on the LG Player. If I turn the sound bar off, the TV sound just great on both codecs.

Who is doing the decoding? The LG Player, or the sound bar. The TV should jut be passing the signal via ARC.
Does setting the LG Player to PCM produce worse audio? Or is it just passing the sound to the decoding hardware of the sound bar?

To add
The LG player I got, and its specs
http://www.lg.com/us/support/product...ec-Sheet-2.pdf
Pretty much decodes everything.

edit:
googling myself :giggle:, and searching for info on the sound bar, the SB26 I got may not support DTS tracks

Yeah. I was going to state that the soundbar was at fault there. Seems an odd format for them not to include, though.

I know.
Good think it was very cheap refurb. I could resell for the same price easily.

If only I had space for a proper receiver. My HTPC is taking up all the space.

If anyone is looking for a receiver, this seems pretty good for the price. Don't know much about it but has passthrough and 7.2. Deal ends in like 4 hours.

Nice. I was debating between that and the PSA v1500 back in the day and I remember Tom telling me they were pretty much equal.
Enjoy

I currently have a Paradigm UltraCube 10, it serves my purposes... However, I could probably pick up a 2nd for a few hundred bucks. It would have been barely used, hardly stressed, and just sitting unused at a friends place. He's a good friend, family on my wife's side.

I'd have to make sure my wife will tolerate another big "thing," in the living room. But should I? Otherwise, perhaps I'll just replace the energy 6 cube I have that is pretty useless for even making water ripple. Thats on my home PC.

I finally broke down a few days ago and went full upgrade.

Ordered a new sub:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Upgrading from:

https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YST-SW.../dp/B000TQ4D8K

And new center:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've got a B&W M-1 as a center now, so going to get another M-1 and move them to the rear.

Kinda torn whether to go 7.1, because the room is pretty small, but the total change should be pretty significant.

Last is the receiver, which is a Pioneer VSX-44 and only supports HDMI 2.0 so no HDR. I'm going to hold off on that and see what wins out in the next couple years, Dolby Vision or HDR10. Maybe that's why there's some pretty spectacular deals on receivers currently at my local Best Buy.

Also going to have the TV properly mounted, to free up some floor space. Not sure what I'm going to do about the center speaker yet.

Damn this UHD and HiFi music thing, it's getting costly! But, damn do the new discs really look and sound great. Ugh.

How big is your space? I ordered that sub, and ended up returning it to get the 12". I do want to get a similar LR and C combo with that center. That's my next upgrade.

Pretty small, maybe 12 or 14x14. The little yamaha was great for the really low movie boom base, but couldn't really produce anything else. Reminded me of my old car audio subs, great for rattling things, but hard to produce mid range base.

The acoustic engineer I had in at work this morning is off to James Cameron's (New Zealand) house to build his home theatre. I'm not sure I can even imagine the work that is going into the home theatre. The engineer (and his firm) were involved in building Peter Jacksons sound stages.

If I had to guess, they're probably not using Polk speakers sourced from Amazon.

Can you move the components and speakers out from the wall and separate them a little? It would center the TV in the middle of everything and also might hide the wire on the left out of the wall.

Whew, I feel better. Anyone else feel the need to post in the OCD thread lately?

It was bothering me as well. I also thought it was a little to high up on the wall. I bought the same mount from amazon as I did 5 years ago but didn't double check the listing. Amazon completely changed the item but kept the same model number so I ordered the wrong thing. Pretty pissed about that.

Went with Monoprice and everything looks better now. Will do some more adjusting as it's not completely level but looks much more symmetrical.

I have a pair of Polk speakers I bought in 1995 for about $500. They're collecting dust in my basement. I wonder if they're still any good?

Setting the BR player to output PCM means it is doing the decoding, and sending the uncompressed audio over HDMI.

But, there's a potential problem: ARC will not pass 5.1+ channels of PCM uncompressed audio through the TV to your AVR (not enough bandwidth). So you'll lose any surround channels. If your soundbar is just 2/2.1-ch anyway, don't worry about it (or set the BR player to downmix to 2-ch PCM if dialogue seems muddy/low).

Safest bet is to let the players output bitstream (DD/DTS), but then you can run into the problem of a particular SB not decoding all formats, as it seems you have).

Are you dealing with a surround system, or just 2-ch soundbar. That will determine a lot about how you should set things up.

Edit: just looked at the HK SB26, it's 2-ch w/ a subwoofer, no surround to worry about. Set your BR player to output PCM, ideally as a 2-ch downmix already, and then forget it. BR player can/will decode all formats found on BR discs, so you'll never get a track you can't play that way. Revisit if you ever get a surround AVR.

if the surrounds look undamaged on the drivers, they are probably fine. They are probably decent speakers polk in general was a bit higher end in that period

Sorry, Matt. Polks are actually pretty decent for the price. I own and use a few myself. Their OMW3 is a great speaker to use for Atmos applications where cutting into the ceiling is not an option.

I'm thinking Cameron's home theater budget exceeds my annual salary exponentially.

The surrounds are good. I should hook them up to something to see how they sound. They were awesome when I was 18. Now I just have to find my Panasonic receiver that I bought right around the same time.

Turns out it's a Paradigm MilleniaSub:https://www.paradigm.com/products-cu.../page=overview

It's cute. I can find no honest reviews of this thing, short of industry shills, that won't talk down of Paradigm. It is any good? I can't see such small woofers moving enough air to truly reach the mid 20's it claims to hit... Probably at -10db

Basically I was offered to have it for free, or give him what I think it's worth. I'd do the latter, only because he's family and we're close.. And there isn't any used I can find for a baseline?
