The pioneer Elite you posted tells you what audio format it is decoding. It is on the left of the screen.

I did have that receiver on my list. One of the things I found that was a bit of a turn off was that the on screen display does not work at 4k.
It can display the GUI over 2D/3D video from all HDMI inputs, but not over 4k video.

Yeah I suppose the icons could work if I remembered what all the colors lit up for, but nitpicking it'd be nice if it wasn't sized for ants

I actually disabled all of the overlay OSD features of my Denon x4300h. I don't like the idea of my AVR meddling with the signal heading to my display.

hmm, yeah I guess it probably doesn't matter too much in the end

Found this receiver that seems to be have everything including preouts for all 7:2 channels. Most other receivers in this range seem to only have the sub outs.

https://www.costco.com/Yamaha-TSR-78...100308760.html

Seems to drop sometimes to $425-$450 and was down to $399 til the end of December.

Anything wrong with any of the brands that I should steer clear of?

I have a 7.1 speaker setup now. Just bought a 65" LG Oled. Potentially replacing speakers down the line, but not in a rush just yet.

I have used Onkyo and Sony receivers previously, but have no real brand loyalty - both of them had issues eventually, but lasted many years.

Here's what I think I need - tell me if I'm missing something or over/under stating needs, too:

  • Minimum of 5 HDMI inputs - 6 or more rear inputs would be better but not necessary, don't really want to hang one off of a front input if I add a device - would more than likely replace a device than add an entirely new one tbh
  • Dolby Vision/HDR10/HLG/4K UHD
  • Dolby Atmos/DTS:X
  • Room calibration mic/setup
  • Wireless conectivity for music playback - Chromecast or even bluetooth should suffice (Google Music)
  • Inputs need to be re-nameable on display. I don't want to have remember that HDMI4 is PS4 and HDMI3 is firestick, etc

I need arc when I use apps on my TV for audio, right? Is that kind of a standard thing now? For example, using Xplay app built into TV to stream Plex so that I get audio from receiver instead of TV Speakers only.

I would prefer that the front display shows the audio type as well versus just the name of the input:

Preouts for channels besides sub - not sure that I'd add another amp down the line but maybe if I go big on speakers later

I do not have any component input or phono needs and don't forsee any need going forward.
the marantz NR1608 receiver would fit most of your checkboxes. it has 7 rear HDMI inputs, one HDMI input on the front, plus an ARC out on the back. 2 sub outs, but only front LR and Zone 2 preouts though.

http://us.marantz.com/us/Products/Pa...oductId=NR1608

it has the Audessy MultEQ room correction, and can tie into the amazon sex slave, alexa.

I have the Marantz AV7702mkII processor and I am quite impressed with it. very similar functionality as the NR1608.

I'd hope so for $2000+

I do not yet have my own sex slave from amazon

I'm a fan of Denon. Never had an issue with the three I have.

It's actually in great shape. Just needed new belts as the original ones have turned to jelly

I will say Sony did a great job of engineering as replacing the belts was quite easy.

Here's the whole setup. This is at work. Speakers are Boston Acoustics HD8

Killer! Looks like a great setup. Digging the looks of that Kenwood receiver. I've got an old Kenwood KD-5077 full auto turntable. I love it.

I saw those dusty knobs on the tape deck and figured it was worse off. That's great you got it running again.

I have always had a sweet spot for Yamaha (and Denon.)

https://usa.yamaha.com/products/audi...0_u/index.html

It has phono input terminals. I was hoping it had a preamp, but I didn't find details on my glance at the site. I think they are just marketing the labeled input.

9 speaker terminals with Intelligent Amp Assign for Zone 2
Add audio in up to 9 additional rooms with MusicCast
Voice control using your Alexa device like Echo or Echo Dot
8-in, 2-out HDMI

Advanced HDMI zone switching (Zone 2)
High-performance digital-to-analog conversion (ESS SABRE Premier Audio DAC ES9006A)
Fully loaded with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, TIDAL, and Deezer music streaming service

So as a house warming gift when I bought my new place in July my family is so imaginative they all got me Best Buy gift cards. So Is there anyway to put together a decent setup from Best Buy for around 1k? I feel like there isn't but maybe worth asking.

so my receiver's TV-OUT HDMI port is fooked.

what is a recommended brand (currently have Pioneer, great when it works, but its my 2nd one in 6 years, so that's out) ... Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo?

also, what is current HDMI spec? 2.0b? i know 2.1 is coming out at some point, but not looking at a 10K TV anytime soon.

Budget and power requirements? That Yamaha Chapstein mentioned a few posts up looks pretty damn sweet.

I'm quite partial to my Marantz surround processor. Their new slimline NR1608 receiver looks quite good.... It has Audessy MultEQ room correction software built in, plus all the other modern trappings you would hope for in such a thing.

Edit: damn, slow at typing. Oh and with no specified budget I'd suggest a McIntosh MX-122.

Only thing I didn't like about the NR1608 is:

Power Output (8 ohm, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08% 2ch Drive) 50 W

Only has front and zone 2 preouts (other than subs).

guess i should have added budget and specs ... duh!
current is a Pioneer VSX-1124k

less than $600 ... would like 7.1 + 2 front high (since they are already mounted), video upscaling, Bluetooth, at least 6 HDMI inputs. app control would be nice, too.

It might be hard to come by at this point, but I love the Denon x4300h I picked up ~$500 earlier this year. Might be worth shopping around. 9.2-Ch x 125 Watts with plenty of bells & whistles, including 4k HDR/DV pass through.

Thoughts on using these TV risers to allow for me to place my center underneath the tv (65" Sony 930E)?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...WCK1O3NR&psc=1

The center is only about 8" deep, and the 930E stand isn't flat enough for me to trust placing the tv on it (current set up).

Think I'm going to order this for my TV to do the same thing. I have an ugly center channel stand that I've been trying to get rid of but these vesa mount stands have never occurred to me.

Yeah, that is really weak! Didn't realize it's so low. That's why I went with separates; I like the extra headroom of a more powerful amp, despite my smaller space and super efficient Klipsch speakers.

I've got a lot of preout options on my AV7702mkII, plus zones 2 and 3, which I have yet to utilize.
