My 75" panel is wall mounted and the panel sits about 4" from the wall. Front of the seats are approximately 10 feet from the panel, with the back of the seats being 3 feet from the wall behind so your ears are approximately 3 feet from rear wall, and your eyes are sitting at 12 feet from the panel once the recliner is in lean back. Walls and ceiling are painted a medium gray so once the lights go off, it's pitch dark, theater style. There is a window but it has a blackout shade as well as a blackout frame so in the middle of the day in the summer it's still pitch black.

A lot of people get hung up on screen size and they don't even have a room to accommodate. I could have done a 85" screen but it would have overpowered the room and I would have had to flip everything around and it would ruin audio setup as well as seating. You need to look at the room as a whole. Many people spend the largest portion on a panel then muck the audio, which is equally as important. Like I said, 75" or 85" you can move your seats closer to it to blind you to get that theater, first 1/3 of the theater type setup.

I spent I think 12k all in with wiring, all components, seating, new breakers/electrical. Sony X940E, Marantz SR8012, Sony 800M2 4k player, Apple 4k box, Dish 4k Joey, component shelf, Octane seating, JBL Studio 5 Series for the 7 channels, JBL Studio 210 for Atmos X 4 (wanted full range speakers for Atmos to future proof as the studios are increasingly sending more sound through Atmos channels) and two HSU VTF-3 Mk5 subs. I got everything at cost, or well below cost (All JBL's) sans the subs and seats. The panel is the best LED panel that Sony has ever made for cinema. They quit making it and the series on purpose to push people into OLED. The JBL Studio 5 series, if you hunt, you'll catch them for steal prices. They have bi-radial horns and are absolutely stunning. I had a friend over who has built home theaters since 1979. He was appalled at how little I spent for what I got. And he was especially pissed at the JBL's because he did not know they still made bi-radial horns. Bigger rooms the front channels should go with 3 590's, laying one of them horizontally for the center channel. My room is not large enough for that setup so I went with 580 towers and the 520c center channel. I have the 530's for sides and rears and they are one of the best speakers I have ever heard. 11 JBL's, cost me $1650 shipped. They sound like they cost 10X that amount.

Don't chintz on your audio. It's what makes it a theater experience. My audio setup mutilates even an Imax theater. Together with PQ there is no point ever setting foot in a commercial cineplex, even Imax, ever again. The subs have chest slam and will rattle your brain. I could have went with dual 12" subs but got the 15's for overkill. And the gains are on the lower end, and it still shakes the room in spades. If you want to spend less then go with 5.2.2, but at least get 2 Atmos channels. It really does make a massive difference because it creates a bubble, or 3D like sound. Rain, sound effects, it makes a big difference, to me, because you have sound all around you. 7.2.4 is ideal. I've been to people's houses who have the fanciest OLED made, and have a sound bar hooked up to it and I The sound is horrible. The movie theater experience is having that sound pan all around you. In a dialog movie it's not as important (you still need a quality center channel) but if there is a killer soundtrack, either music or sound effects, you are missing the boat.

The screen is just one thing in a list of things to get a room right. Like you I was dead set on a 4k Projector and screen for many years. A few friends big into HT, with one of them going back to 1979 building his own HT's said no. And that guy has money, I mean F U money. Even he quit using projectors when he did the 4k migration. He has an 85" panel now. And his JBL's are commercial grade, big $$$, the kind of JBL's they put into commercial cinemas. So if he is not using a projector and he has the deep pockets to drop on a 40k Sony 4k projector (commercial projector) then it spoke volumes, to me. Projectors are for big rooms where you are going to have multiple rows of seats. Pivot and get the audio right. It's just as important as the screen. I did this almost 2 years ago and it was worth every single cent. I put a lot of it on 0% and just now paying the room off.
Here’s the layout of the room, from the appraiser. It’s a bit deceiving as it doesn’t show the walls in the room around the bathroom or the stairs. There’s also some weird stuff going on with the drop ceiling. As in there are lower parts of the drop ceiling that clearly have the support beams for the upper floors in them. I’ll try and get better pics later on of the room.

Updated layout of the room. Red boxes are walls that don’t show up on the appraisal pic:

Wow, recommended viewing distance for 4k content is crazy short
The recommended distance for watching a 4K TV is 1.5 times the TV's vertical screen size
TV size Viewing distance range (approx.)
43 inch 35 inches (2.95 feet)
49 inch 39 inches (3.28 feet)
55 inch 39 inches (3.28 feet)
65 inch 47 inches (3.94 feet)
75 inch 55 inches (4.59 feet)
85 inch 63 inches (5.25 feet)

I'm currently sitting at 12 ft. I need up up my game and upgrade that 55" to 85"

blue-sun, what about the ceiling height? Looks low, on the standard 8ft.
Have you tried using blue tape to simulate a 120" screen, see how it would fit?
How about the projector? hanging from the ceiling? Back wall? Will it add a hazzard for tall people?

I’d wager that it’s 7 foot in the main area with some sections being 6.5 foot.

I thought the projector would hang from the ceiling.

My wagers were correct, down in my basement now and drop ceiling is 7 foot and the areas where the beams are 6.5 feet. The back section of lowered 6.5 ceiling is 5 feet wide and runs along the back wall, so projector can’t be mounted there, would have to be more forward than that, so directly above the seats. The “just get an 85” and call it a day” seems to have more merit now.

yeah, I think the 85 will be better choice.
Leaves money for some lights

Maybe even clean that tv furniture up and just leave the speaker on top

Hey dudes, amateur question time. I am mounting a soundbar and need to run an audio cable and the power cord and my contractor is saying that is a no no due to interference? Do they make a sleeve shield or something? It is a Sonos ARC FWIW.

Yeah this is what I was kindly trying to tell you. In your pics, you can move the seats as close as you want. The 85 is going to be money. You can just slide your seating area forward until it is where your ideal viewing distance will be. Everyone is different in this regard. The 85 will be perfect. A projector would have to be mounted right over the seating area and they give off heat and make noise from the fan running. If you have no issue spending the AC money to compensate for the heat, and you run the AVR a little louder then no problem. You can kill the side effects of that projector but to get a good 4k projector and screen it is so much more expensive than a quality panel. That was my dilemma, go out all just to have a projector then I would have to get chintzy speakers, crap subs, cheap AVR, nah. It needs to be thought of as an overall project. You want to equalize all the stuff you are going to buy. Not overspend in one area and underspend in another.

You just need to paint the walls a dark color. I did flat medium gray. You want it so when you kill the lights it is pitch dark in there with just the screen visible. I would focus your $ on the audio with dual subs and get 4 Atmos channels mounted in the ceiling or my preference, on the walls with adjustable mounts so if you need to change angles due to a seating change in the future, you can. 2 in front of the seating area and 2 behind the seating area. As long as you choose good speakers and AVR you are going to get that theater experience. You should start looking at the new FALD panels from Sony that just released at CES. You are going to have a killer HT down there if the audio is solid.

Edit: What you are running for speakers? Looks like Klipsch stuff on your front channels and sub. Just get a second sub, and Kipsch sides/rears, and your ceiling is ideal for Atmos speaker installation. But I would not drill that ceiling until you nail down your seating location. You will probably have to get a new AVR. Few run 7.2.4. I had to get a Marantz SR8012 as I did not want to run dedicated amps The 8012 is the only one they mfr in Japan, the rest are China.
And looking at your room pics for the 2nd time, dude, you have got an ideal room for HT, big time. Yeah your ceiling height is low but I have seen many 50k-100k theater setups in homes with less ideal room dimensions. You will be fine, that is a killer room man. You have got wide walls.FL Sub Panel Sub FR would be what I would do for the front arrangement unless you want to put both subs behind you against the wall firing towards you in the seating area. I really do not think you have a ton to spend. New panel and AVR. 2nd sub, sides and rear channels. Bookshelf Klipsch speakers for the sides and rears will be sufficient with some stands from Monoprice. None of that will be too much $, just the AVR you will be cussing. I cussed, and I got mine at cost. In the end, yeah, I doubt you will want to ever to a commercial cineplex again. 4k discs release 90 days after they are in the theater and you can buy it for less than what it would cost for a family to just buy tickets, nevermind the concessions and you get to hit pause to use the restroom, get a drink, food, or just take a break. And then you can rent, as I do, for about $3 per 4k disc.

I have been a film buff my whole life. Ever since 1980 as a small child. Films were an escape from a nasty childhood. Starting as a teen I would go to the theater every single weekend unless it was just the lull times. I did this and bitched the last 5-6 years because ticket prices have become insane and the ADD present and phone interruptions just wore me out. The last couple of years I was buying Cinemark 4 pack tickets at Costco for $8.50 a pop, otherwise it was $14-17.50 if I bought at the theater. $17.50 was for the XD Theater in my cineplex. Even then, the speakers and subs are far away and your home setup will annihilate it. A new Sony panel with Dolby Vision + Atmos in the ceiling = Dolby Cinema. The cineplexes that have a Dolby Cinema theater fester and market the F out of it, and guess what? You can have the same thing at home. i dork out on this ish because after I redid my room I could not believe what I was missing, how I was able to do it all cost efficiently, and I am stoked every time I go in there. My PQ is better than a commercial cinema, and my audio blows IMAX theaters out of the water. 4k discs have surpassed what you can get out of a commercial cinema, any of them, IMO. It was April of 2019 I was at a Marvel film (not a big fan of them btw) and it was the 2nd film in a row where I had an ADD millennial next to me fiddling with their hair and doing smartphone interruptions. For 2 years in a row every single time I would go to see a movie the phones. I was there to escape life, take a break and enjoy a good film. Only to be interrupted by some narcissistic ass hole on their phone. I mean every single film for 2 years in a row. I walked out, said no fin more, and whatever it takes to bring this home. Best investment of my entire life. Vaya Con Dios AMC, Cinemark, etc. You should have done something about this phone crap years ago. They will never see another dime out of me.

I’ve seen this listed posted so many times and it’s utter BS. I have a 75” 4k panel and no way in hell would I sit 5 feet from it. I’m about 10 feet and it’s perfect. And if I hit the recliners all the way down more like 11 feet from the panel and it’s still perfect. From 10-12 feet away I make out individuals hairs on screen and can tell the difference from 1080p all day. If your seating distance is 12 feet, you can either move the seating up a foot or two. And either 75’ or 85” will work. The quality of the panel, especially the blacks, is more important than screen size. I’ll take a better PQ 75” over a less PQ 85” panel all day. The key to a killer HT setup is thinking of it as a complete package. People get way too hung up on screen size and they should be working on audio. Once you’ve got some good clean bass, surround sound and some Atmos channels, man you’re livin’.

8k to me is absolutely pointless. 8k could be a thing if you are running over 100” screen and sit close enough but that’s like being the first rows at the movie theater, something I have never enjoyed.

As long as they're a couple inches apart there's no issue. If they can't be then run the power in romex?

You make some good points, I hadn’t thought about moving the seating closer to the screen until you first mentioned it. I think the next 2 purchases for this room will be proper rear speakers. IDK about doing a rear sub, that seems like overkill for this little space and the wife acceptance factor is already low on the sub as is. It rattles the main floor, as the theater area is directly below the living room, with the TV down there being on the same wall as the fireplace, so the vibrations travel up the walls already! Two subs will shake the foundation of this house!!!

And after proper rear speakers next is the seating. She already hates the mush-mash leftover seats that are down there now, so we need actual seats.

Then once those are settled I’ll think about ceiling speakers for 7.1 and projector/85”. Oh and the walls definitely need paint! That might happen first in the spring before everything else!

I'm in the process of putting my Bluray player, shield TV, Berringher Amp and Denon Receiver in a closed cabinet. Looking into cooling options. I'm either looking at some noctua fans install into the back as exhaust and have on permanently or a AC infinity Aircome s6 or s8. Do you guys have any experience with this? Leaning towards the AC infinity as it has a smart feature but wanted to check with you all. Thanks.

That is a huge bummer. I am too much of a tree hugger to buy products from a company that purposefully creates that kind of waste.

I use the AC Infinity fans, and I can recommend them. At least the USB systems with the controller and thermal probe(s) that I'm currently using in 2 component cabinets. I have a, Aircome T8 that I no longer use as I realized was causing as much heat as it was removing due to sitting on top of the AVR. It was ALWAYS on and spinning faster than I would like (it's audible) to keep the AVR under 90. With the loose fans, they are off most of the time, and keeps my cabinet at a steady 85 degrees under load with the fans at super quiet low and slow setting.

I just picked up the Aircome T10 for my receiver to keep temps down. Recently upgraded to some SVS Ultra Towers and they are power hungry making the receiver a bit warmer than I would like. It seems to doing the job and hasn't been super loud. I have it on the smart setting and set the max of fans to level 3 out of 6.

It was ALWAYS on and spinning faster than I would like (it's audible) to keep the AVR under 90. With the loose fans, they are off most of the time, and keeps my cabinet at a steady 85 degrees under load with the fans at super quiet low and slow setting.
I second the AC Infinity fans. They are great.

We have a condo with a bedroom with poor circulation (really none) with the door closed. I installed an Airframe t7 intake down low in the wall, and an Airframe t7 exhaust high on the wall. Moves air silently when the temp parameters are reached, and shuts off automatically when not needed. Works really well.

My WAF on a second PB2000 is currently at eye roll status. Good sign.

Just ordered one of these Minidsp SHD to use as a preamp. I will miss the sweet toggles and high end 90s build quality of my audio research tube pre, but I think I need to get with the times.

Dirac live room correction, 4 channel very high quality DAC (2 for mains, 2 for separate sub integration), fully configurable parametric EQ, crossover, and filtering options. 24bit 96khz ADC for the turntable. Its really hard to mix modern functionality with audiophile sensibilities intact but I am hopeful this is the ticket.

Sparked by me measuring my room a bit and realizing I have a 15dB peak at 60 hz. I notched it out and it completely transformed the sound. I guess I had grown accustom to boomy bass.

Been using Aircom S8’s for 2 years on the smart setting. Work fantastic. The S8 will crank up if I’m running either AVR hard but otherwise they are relatively quiet. Great investment.

All this Aircom talk reminded me I wanted something to keep things cool.
My old TV furniture was open with plenty of airflow. Now the AVR is in and area that is closed on all sides except the front, and maybe the large hole in the back for the cables.
Read some reviews about Aircom and how some airflow products actually made the heat worse, as they didnt circulate properly.

Anyway, plan is to maybe install fans on the back side, that way any heat is pulled out.
Currently running the AVR at my typical volume so I can measure heat inside that area.
Ambient is 66F, current temp at 10 minutes is 70F. It it keeps like this, I may not need much cooling after all.

As I stated before, I firmly believe my AIRCOM T8 was causing as much heat accumulation and retention as it was mitigation. Since I've removed it and installed cabinet fans for exhaust, I've seen a pretty substantial reduction in both heat and fan noise. I mean, my component cabinet is not too dissimilar to a PC case, so I pretty much set it up like one. AC Infinity makes good products.

Movie just ended, 1:30 time.
Ambient temps 66F, temp measured at the AVR area 76F.
Looks great IMO.
Ill have to redo this during summer tems, when ambient is high 70s.
