Oil analysis after 3k of using Torco Race Fuel Concentrate
I've been wondering for a while what effects Torco race fuel cocentrate has on my motor. I know it keeps it from knocking but what else? Does it do anything bad?
Had an oil analysis done. I've been using Amsoil 5w30 since 3,177 miles, and until this last oil change, NAPA gold oil filters. For this last change I went with a k&n oil filter. I've changed the oil every 3k miles without fail; this is the first analysis I've had done. http://70.85.129.132/~sjhiller/wrxOil.jpg Some things are definitely weird with my oil: Lead is 66, the average is 5 Manganese is 253, the average is 0 I just don't know if these are things I should be worried about. I'd planned on doing an oil filter comparison- for my next change I was going to use a Baldwin B161-S oil filter to see how it compared to the k&n. But now I want to know if the torco is causing my elevated lead levels. So I guess good science will go out the window when I change two variables for the next 3k miles- no torco, and the baldwin filter. So let's hear it. Is the Torco safe to use, or is it doing Bad Things?

Post this on www.bobistheoilguy.com and see what the oil dorks have to say. I'd recommend a good tune to get rid of your det and stay away from Torco.

Unabomber- how am I supposed to get a good discussion going when you go and post the right solutions in the first reply? :-)
When I got my 93 octane Cobb Stage 2 AccessEcu reflash, I'd get occasional detonation over 5k under hard acceleration and I could feel timing being pulled between 4.5 and 5k. No matter which brand's 93 I put in it. So I tried toulene- it worked but I found it to be too inconvenient. Then I tried torco; it worked- not only was there no det, but it was smoooooooooth. No flat spots, no stumbling ever. And it was easy to deal with, and cheaper, so I stuck with it. I got the oil analysis done because I wanted to do a filter comparison, and turns out that the torco looks to be hosing my oil quality. So to hell with Torco. Let's try the bkr7e's I've had sitting around here since last august. Just got back inside from installing 'em and taking the car for a test zoom. I feel entirely vindicated about my having been trying to avoid swapping my plugs. Maybe it's that I've got pneumonia, but man, that install was a royal PITA. Right up there with the up pipe install. But it was worth it- the results are sweet. Silky smooth pull in 1st-3rd all the way to redline (didn't get near redline in 4th or 5th), without any funky stuff in the tank. Wish I'd just done the colder plugs last august instead of messing around with octane boosting crap. Colder plugs rule. |

About 99% of the mmt is combusted to Mn3O4 (manganese tetroxide). This should go out in the exhaust or out in the "blowby." That means it can contaminate the oil.
On the other hand silica coming in through the air filter is harder. Mn3O4 is about 1 mohs softer which falls in the range of glasses. Some specifics would help here. What do you do? Example: I add 32 ounces of Torco unleaded to 5 gallons of fuel to get xxx octane.... or whatever. Regarding silica, what air filter do you use? |

I've been using an OEM subaru filter; replaced it 6k miles ago. I looked at it though when I was changing my plugs, and it's freaking filthy. Getting a new one tomorrow after work.
For Torco usage, I was adding about 10 oz every time I put gas in the car (always $20 worth, so somewhere around 8 gallons- always 93 octane). |

Torco also has a leaded additive. Blending of the unleaded product may involve a little contamination with the other product, like a residual in a pipe. That's purely speculation on my part, having seen bulk blending operations in other places.

I've been running the unleaded version. At least that's what the cans say. Maybe 'unleaded' means 'ok, so maybe a little bit of lead'.
Colder plugs seem to have done the trick. Not even going to mess with the torco anymore. :-) |

If you are interested, do a Google search (SWRI and MMT). That reminds me, I have to see how Google is doing since I am stair stepping the price up and down right now. I don't have a real job, so I need some investment action when I am not twisting up and down the real hills. |
