Have a Nice Day? Found the dash / steering column rattle on new '05 STi

I know some of the new '05 STi owners have mentioned rattling sound around the steering column area / dashboard.

Thanks to the freeways here in SoCal, I have lots of time to hear it and finally found the source. I found the button on the cruise control stalk to jiggle and make this buzzing/rattling sound. If you place your finger(middle one) on the button, the rattling sound disappears. It is basically loose. The other source which only rattles at washboard roads is the IC spray switch button. Again it is loose.

Now I talk to the service manager about it and he told me to make an appointment so they can test drive it. C'mon I am already pointing it out to him to save them the hassle.

Anyone else with a jiggling on/off switch on their STi's?

BTW, my fix right now is piece of rubber band tied around the stalk.

After how many miles did this noise pop up?

Right after I drove it from the showroom floor i.e. 3.9 miles.

Really? I have 400 on mine and have not found any squeaks/rattles yet, ranging from idle to 100 mph... <knock on wood>

no rattles here, but, you should fix it yourself rather than reliying on the dealer to find a noise

If you're worried about rattles you're really going to in for it.

My '04 along with every STi with over 5,000 miles I've been in rattles from every direction.

YMMV but you're most likey not going to have much luck with the dealership repairing a rattle on this car. Honestly, it's expected to happen with the suspension on this car.

werd! When naming this vehicle, I think Impreza beat out Rattletrap by one vote.

I am very aware that this car will not be rattle free and I've owned several modified cars in the past some with stiffer spring rates, etc.

What I'm saying is for a car off the showroom floor with loose push button switch is not acceptable but I'm willing to fix it myself with a fricking rubber band.

I am also curious how many more STi ('05's) owners noticed this. FWIW, here is a link to an earlier thread:

yea my car does that too, right after i got it and drive it back home...
when i picked it up, it's like 17 km on it

but i am not gonna bother to make that noise go away, since as time passes by, more and more of those rattle noise will come for sure

it's just a japanese car, can't expect it as high quality as those euro band

I have the same rattle on my 05 STi. My 98 c5 with a cam does not rattle as much as this Sti. I've already replaced the front passenger side speaker due to rattle. My current fix on cruise control rattle is to hold it with a finger while I am driving. I can live with some rattles but the requency of this rattle just drives me bananas

Thinking about crazy glueing the bitch shut, I don't use cruise control anyways

My 05 WRX (not STi) has the same rattle from the cruise control lever. Drives me crazy, rattles all the time now and only 1,500 miles on the car. It has rattled since day one but seems to be getting worse. Bad thing is that I don't ttrust teh dealer to try and fix the problem so I am going to try some foam around the arm to dampen it and maybe that will help.

I used to drive a gutted Civic hatchback so I can live with a rattle now and then but this is so anoying I just can 't take it anymore. I went on a 1,200 mile road trip and had a rolled up piece of paper stuck between the wheel and lever the whole time to keep it from make that damn noise. lol

1700 miles here, no rattle.

The only rattle I hear is from my daughter's latch lock car seat thing. =9
