Trunk rattle
Anybody had a rattle that sounds like it is in the trunk?
It makes it when I back up and when I'm going slow over bumps so it's not the spoiler. Dealer already "fixed" it once by tightening the spoiler but that didn't do anything (just like the crummy alignment they gave me). Any ideas?

My guess is that the clasp that holds the trunk closed is too high. There are two bolts.....loosen them and move the clasp down a little. It might be a "little" more difficult to close the trunk, but the rattle goes away{with my car}.

Thanks, I thought about that, but I have one of the really tight trunks already. My inside trunk release won't work half the time because it is so tight.

It could be the cover over the spare tire. I know mine did it and I went to HomeDepot, bought some rubber grommets and placed them into the holes that the cover fits into. I also placed foam tape around the entire cover to insulate it from the metal of the trunk.

WRXs had same issue and it was just the tire iron/jack being loose in the trunk---put a towel around it and jam it against the spare tire and it might just take care of your rattle.

Thanks, keep the ideas coming. I took the tools out and tightened the spare. That didn't help but that cover sure didn't look very secure. I will just take it out and see if that's it. The rattling is kind of like the sound I would think a loose wing on the trunk would make, but all that is tightened up and wiggling the wing doesn't make the noise (plus wiggling the wing would shake the trunk lid around and that doesn't make the noise).
Are there any suspension parts that could be loose up there on the back? I don't know how to get to top of the suspension bolts to check. Also I found a styrofoam (sp) block behind the license plate that was loose. I don't think that is the cause but I'm not sure. |

Also, check the middle seat belt spool. It is mounted in the middle of the rear deck and rattles pretty bad...especially if you have a sub-woofer in the trunk.

There is something else you might check. Several of the STI owners on the STI site and myself have had their rear sway bar bushings just fall-out! I had jacked my 300 mile STI up to pull a rear wheel while switching to alloy lug nuts and noticed an object on the garage floor. Amazingly, it was my left rear sway bar bushing. I pulled the mounting shackle off via the two bolts and reinstalled. Fixed, no problems since. The other guys noted RATTLES IN THE REAR LIKE YOURSELF. Good Luck.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm going after the sway bar check tomorrow morning. That could be it as it seems worse on slow backing and going forward when turning over any kind of bump. I took out the tire cover, noise still there. Checked the middle seatbelt by pulling it all the way out and keeping some pressure on it, noise still there. I also wedged the trunk release handle and the base of the release unit in there real tight, no difference in the noise.

Checked the swaybar mounts, all seems tight and where it should be. Checked the other seatbelts, doesn't seem to be that either.
Is there some kind on gasket under the wing that could be misaligned? Still haven't jacked it up to check the top suspension mounting points, but that seems unlikely. Back to the dealer I guess (like that will do any good but they will get to drive my car for a day). |
