Default Letting off the gas at 3.5k rpm

I just got my STi within the last week and I have a couple of questions.

I am going through the breakin period and keeping it under 4k rpm, and trying to vary my engine and road speed as much as possible. When I am in 3rd or 4th gear (more likely 4th I believe), am at a little lower than 4k rpm, probably only going like 35-45 mph and I let off the gas...well I feel the car engine braking a lot. I'm not sure if this is a car term or not, but I feel like the car is "backing off" really hard. Kinda bogging down, but really just engine braking. Is this normal for the STi? Does it really like to be towards the higher rpm band? Does yours back off that hard?

It's probably not as dramatic as I am making it sound, but I just want to know if it's normal. Thanks for any responses.

It doesn't seem like a problem. What kinda car did you have before this one? It may be the gross weight of the car that seems to slow the car prematurely.
But what about that exhaust/engine rumble... Isn't it delightful?

It could also be that even keeping it under 4000rpms, the car accelerates so fast that when you let off, you feel a drastic change in speed and the car isn't really engine braking as hard as you think.

I actually had a '98 2.5RS before this, so I think I would be used to Subarus in general. But the STi is really a whole different kind of monster, so it may be that I'm just not used to it. And yes, I think it is about 400 lbs heavier.

And it's not really that I am accelerating and then suddenly letting off or anything like that. I'm just crusing at about 3500 or 3700 rpm and let off and then I feel it.

I don't really think it's a problem. I just want to make sure it isn't.

it's just because you are in a lower gear. Do the same thing in fifth and I bet it doesn't "brake" as hard

I have noticed this head snapping tendency. I attribute it to the extra sensitivity of the drive by wire throttle. You have to be very smooth with it, or sometimes it will snap at you like an angry pit bull. I realized that most of my problem is that I used to drive a car that I had to floor all the time. The STi will take you past 100 mph before you realize you are pushing a little too hard on the gas. It takes time to adjust, but it sure is worth it.

Thanks for the help and reassurances.

I guess I just need to get used to it. And become more in tune with the car.

It's normal - short gears, you will learn to love it : ) You have to realize that ALL the serious power comes on at 4k+ RPM more or less if the car is stock.

What kind of ungodly gas mileage are you getting if you are
"cruising around @ 3700-4000 rpms"?

Try running in the 1800-2200 rpm range, a little lag, but if you're
going 25 mph in town, whats the big deal anyway.

My engine slows quickly from 5500 rpms in second gear too, wouldn't you? hehe.
