I also bought an STI because of it's dual personallity. The AWD and great gas mileage were the selling features to my "better half" and the 300bhp was my selling point. I plan on changing to Blizzak LM22's before the snow flies as well. I drive this car 500 miles round trip about once a month to my cabin in Northern Michigan. My previous daily driver(98 Dodge Ram 4wd on 36" tires) had no problem regardless of how much snow was on the ground. Although it did leave a bit to be desired when it came to power and gas mileage. So far the back roads up there have been pretty fun even with the current tires. It will probably get more interesting with snow on the ground. My cabin is located near where they run the Sno*Drift rally every year.

Higher gears ie 4th 5th etc are much better to avoid slipping in the snow. That includes engine braking.

I'm sorry, I meant when you're going down a long steep icy hill, low gears to keep you from going too fast and having to brake.
(I guess I should have expressed that)

but yes when driving around town, higher gears, ie 2000 rpm driving to avoid all that torque to the wheels.

thanks for correcting me

I'm just talking regular old driving down the road on a freshly snowed road that hasn't been plowed but regaulr traffic has driven over and packed into a slushy wet but still hard and semi-frozen mush.

With the above scenario I'd put my money on the WRX, hands down and without a second thought.

Janq-

Having put about 25K miles of winter driving on my wagon, which is lowered (Prodrive springs), has Axxis Ultimate pads, more power than stock, and ran LM-22s, I can say that since the STi has most of those traits stock, it will still be awesome in the snow and I'd take it over the WRX.

My last autocross was in the rain (with standing and running water), and the DCCD in auto felt awesome. I really liked the way the car responded to mid turn throttle and braking. It was very predictable and tossable. An STi with snow tires (especially not H rated ones) will be awesome in snow, ice and slush.

Putting 215 section tires on the STi for snow is an option as well. (BTW, Tirerack has Dunlop Winter Sport M2s for 99 buck each right now in stock WRX size...that'll probably be my choice this winter just on price alone over LM-22s.)

With snow already falling a few thousand feet higher than my home right now and expected down to 10K feet this week I guess I should figure out what I'm doing for tires.

TRS,

In the end time will tell toward who's right wrong or meets in the middle.

If I'm wrong I'll gladly and openly admit it. I have no problem with being wrong. You can bet I'll take my own STi out for a winter 'shakedown' ride to see how she handles the slushy & frozen stuff.

No matter what happens I hope we're all safe and no one hurts themselves or others this winter in their STi.

Regards,

- Janq

Janq, I have it on "very good" authority that the STi loves the snow, with the right tires. Don't panic, it will be just fine.

The issues you mention about gearing and brakes are really not an issue, and just require a minor adjustment in driving style.

Providing you have the right tires, it will be just fine.

I live in Canada and we get a serious amount of snow for 5 mos of the year. I am putting Michelin Icetracks on.
