Default Re: sti transmission cooler configuration

I would very much appreciate it if one of you lucky sti owners could please take a look and describe the six speed tranny cooler setup in your car. I believe the oil cooler is incorporated into the the bottom of the radiator. I would just like confirmation of this. A picture would speak a thousand words, hint hint.. I would love to know the route the oil lines take to get to the radiator. I have a six speed to be installed into my rex and I want to use the same setup as factory. I have a theory that the radiator used for the six speed is the same radiator used in the automatic trans WRX's.
Thank you, Tom..

I'd be interested in the factory setup as well. I made my own for my 6MT and have been using it for a few months. The parts for the factory one seemed to be way too much when sourced from Japan. Might be cheaper from the US though.

I feel like I'm begging for an answer here...
Could someone please look at the bottom of their radiator to see if there are two small rubber lines comming off the bottom of the radiator. This will help those that are doing 6 speed swaps in the future. I would just drive to the dealer and look but I'm over 40 miles away to the nearest one. So an answer would be most appreciated.
Thanx, Tom

Tom,
I don't think the transmission has an oil cooler-
oil cooler for WRX = AT only
STi = M/T only = no trans oil cooler
it does have an oil pump and an oil tube that sprays oil on top of the gears instead of them being submersed in gear oil

-engine oil cooler only

I would post picts but I have no url to link them from-

PM me with your email address, and I will email you all the info I have on the MT6-

Yeah I'm aware of the WRX auto trans using a tranny cooler. Have you looked at the bottom of your radiator to see if there are two small lines plumbed into it ( actually it would be an " in " and "out " flow ) lines.
Japanparts.com use to carry a sti "6" speed oil cooler. They called it a cooler / radiator combo. Unfortunately they do not offer it for sale any longer. They said that sti is not making it anymore. It could be because they are offered as standard equipment on the six speed with front lsd option ??? Dunno. That what I am trying to find out.
Thank you for offering to send pics by the way.

According to my STi marketing brochure, the 6MT has a transmission oil cooler.
But, according to my STi service manual, there is NO MENTION of an transmission oil cooler.
Who should I believe??
their marketing department, or their engineering department who wrote the service manual??

I seriously don't think there's one on there!
took a look and I only see the main inlet and outlet hoses to and from the block.

I could be wrong though-anyone else??
Do I smell free gear oil cooler, compliments of Subaru- or maybe they'll buy them back like the Mazda rx-8's--Just kidding

here's a ton of info on the swap though
Also, I can still email the info I have on the 6MT-sans oil cooler

this post is going crazy...I keep trying to post a link to i-club and it's changing it to nasioc!

you have to copy the url below and paste it into your browser and delete the spaces between w w w.

if that doesn't work, go to i-club.com and do a search for "WRX MT6 swap"

zavigm,
Yeah I am familiar with the technicals regarding the six speed. I've done my research prior to buying. Doing the swap will be no problem either. I am surprised that the USDM sti does not have the optional tranny oil cooler, especially when it is outfitted with a front lsd.

The only STi that comes with the oil cooler is the RA Spec C tarmac edition, of which very few are probably outfitted. The rally teams that use the 6MTs generally don't use them either, they just tie together the two lines coming out of the transmission.

Yes I have heard about what the rally teams do with the lines. But you may be confusing the engine air to oil, oil cooler as an option on the spec C ??
Anyways I have a plan which will be to use an auto WRX radiator which will work fine for my needs. The winters in Vermont are extremly cold and gear boxes don't like that so the coolant will work great as a warmer for cold start ups.

I just want to know why my STi brochure and other specs on different websites say that the STi comes with a 6MT with transmission oil cooler!

Yes that is what I have read also. Sometimes there can be some misinformation and or interpretation of the actual specs. It certainly isnt the first time and won't be the last. I really thought that the sti came with a simple oil to coolant configuration just like the engine cooler has. It makes sense because the six speed has an internal pump so moving oil in and out should not be a problem. And it would help with cold starts by warming the oil. I will be using a WRX radiator out of an automatic car. If your interested in seeing that radiator you can go to this web site where I purchased it from ( I am a member there ). www.toronto-subaru-club.com/ Go to the classified section and look for an oem WRX radiator for sale on the first page.

No, the majority of the JDM 6MTs I've seen do not have the transmission cooler. Of the 20 or so that I saw only 2-3 had the correct lines for the oil cooler. I'd guess if you had your sti on a lift it'd be easy to see where the lines go. I'm using a air-oil cooler setup with mine currently.
