Default Drivetrain issue.

One of the STi owners in town(not a online kind of guy), is having some problems.

At cold low speeds he can feel the front work or not work, front axles feel like they are locking or skipping. ?.

Also when he backup the rear is making some clunking.

He says that he noticed these changes about two days after he changed to Redline Shockproof Lightweight. He is also worried about the rear noise coming from jacking up the rear by the rear diff, he thinks he may have hurt the bushings.

Let me if you guys have ideas.

He is Blue/Gold no mods and about 6,5++ miles.

The rear diff is a jacking point for the chassis and as such shold not have caused any damage.

Redline themselves do NOT reccomend using the Shockproof in the WRX or STI. Instead run the Redline 75w90NS. The rear diff is a mechanical unit and as such does not need or want the extra slip addatives in the other oils. The NS is the Non-Slip addative formula and is waht both the rear, & front/center/tranny all require.

Why did he change gear oil? Was there something wrong with the factory oil?

The rear clunking is normal if you are turning a tight corner (it is from the rear LSD).

When he's backing up and hears the clunking he's probably hearing it when he hits the brakes while going in reverse. The calipers actually move and cause a clunk sound. Try it out. Tell him to back up and hit the brakes, then go forward and hit the brakes. You'll hear a clunk both times.

Not to be an alarmist,But after my dccd failure light started coming on,in the morning
after I started up the car and would back out of my driveway it started making this weird
noise and feeling like two things binding together the noise and feeling was from the rear of the car.Later they told me it was likely the failure and it was going from manual to automode. It has been in the shop
for repairs(replacing tranny/center diff).Matt
also the car was going straight no turn, different noise then what you get when you make sharp turn(I heard that noise too).

Sorry to take so lost to respond, he had changed it because when he would shift into 4th and 5th gear near 6.8K rpms he would grind the gears go into gear. He said the redline cleared that up, however, the new issue popped up.

I will get him to change back to a regular SL-5 gear oil.

I think he had worn out the gear oil/broke the oil down. With the new Penziol he has not had any grinding and the diffs are not making noise now.
