Default Sunoco 94 vs 93: Worth it

With the on going discussion of the STi motor having pinging issues I wanted to see what other people think. Here in PA Sunoco sells both 93 octance and 94 octane. The problem is that the 94 usually sells for $0.10 a gallon more than the 93. My car doesn't seem to be having any real pinging problems, but if it was, is the 94 really worth the extra money? I guess in the broader sceme of things $1.50 a fill up isn't that much. Any thoughts?

it couldn't hurt seriously though, i don't see it making too much difference. try it out and see if u notice anything. my guess is there won't be any noticeable difference. if u aren't have any ping/det problems then i'd wouldn't worry about it. subaru recommends 93 octane or higher. i'd personally go with the 94, $1.50 isn't that much more to have a little better gas running such a gorgeous car.

Default 94 octane

Read the last printed page of the owners manual.

It says 94 octane, 93 octane if you have to.

Damn! I would kill for just $1.50/gallon 91 octane. I'm paying $2.09 for Cali piss pour 91 octane gas.

Just feel lucky and put the 94 in the tank. Your car will love you for it!

I meant $1.50 a tank more, but 94 goes for about $1.67 right now here in PA.

Sunoco seems to have a couple formulation models to use and they vary quite bit but over all it seems 94 has less sulfur content than 93 according to their product matrix which is better for the catalyst in the Cat.

94 does seem to have slightly more MTBE aperantly as an octane enhancer

This week I was at Gingerman Raceway in MI while the weather was nuts, low 90's, full blast of sunshine and humid as hell. Even though I was only able to find 93 octane from Mobil, the engine never pinged, no matter how hard I flogged the car on the track. Tires melting, brakes smoldering if you don't do a cool down lap, or two laps, went through a tank of I/C spray water, and still it never missed a beat!

Default I have tried several gasolines through the years,

and have found that Sunoco 94 is not worth the money at all. In fact, I've had better results using Sunoco 93. I have found the best perfoming gasolines are from Exxon and Mobil, consistently. Sunoco 94 has less power and also was used up faster than the rest.
