Default heat shield on stock turbo

I just installed my downpipe and I was wondering if the heat shield was needed. Right now I don't have it on, please someone help.

I would get it back on at some point. Leaving it off will more than likely raise your underhood temps.

I modified my factory heat shield to clear the downpipe. I also wrapped the entire DP with Thermo-Tec header wrap.

be careful of header wrap if you drive car in the winter. does some nasty stuff to pipes when salt is traped there for a while.

Most downpipes are made of stainless steel, so salt won't harm them.

Chlorides of any kind, including Sodium Chloride (salt), will attack and corrode stainless steel almost as easily as it would carbon steel. Stainless does not mean impervious.

Lack of heat shield will not increase under hood temperature, but it will focus the heat in a tighter area of places you'ld rather keep cooler. Your hood directly above the turbo will get hotter. Your TMIC hot side will get hotter. Etc. The heat shield just spreads the heat better and will be cooler to the touch than the turbo itself, but will still burn the #$%^ out of you.

Last time I checked the TMIC was under the hood. Details though, point is it is there for a purpose.
