What speakers actually fit???
I have searched and searched for the answer to this question and there are plenty of answers out there but I am totally confused as to which size speakers will fit in the STI. Mine is coming in on the 10th of Sept and I want to get the stereo installed soon after, but I need to know what size speakers will fit in the doors. Some say only 5.25, some say 6.5, some say 4 all around. What I'd like to do is put a set of 6.5 components in the front and put some 4 or 5.25s in the back. I know that it probably needs a spacer, is this something a store like Circuit City could do for me? I prefer to have my stereos installed by the shop I'm getting the equipment from (i.e. if they mess up anything it's on them, not me) I apologize for the question because I know that it has been discussed many many times, but I have read so many posts that I have no idea what size I should actually get.
So I want to know if my selections will fit and if a place like Circuit City or Tweeter could handle the install of them. Thanks for the info. I'm just looking for some straight answers.

you can fit 6 1/2 speakers in the front with spacers, and in the rear doors, only 5 1/4 will fit for max size. Your local car stereo store, tweeters, circuit city, etc, should be able to do the install just fine with no problems.

I had to use spacers in the front AND back with my 5 1/4's.

if you go with the subaru upgraded speakers here is what I learned.
1) the stock front speakers bolt right in. 2) You will have to make a bracket for the rear door speakers. I make mine out of 1/8" thick plexiglass. I used a circle cutter on my drill press and make a circle with an outer diameter of 5 3/4" and a inner diameter to match the speaker size (4" diameter) once you have these "rings" hold them up to the door and mark where the mounting holes are (they are not at 120 degree angles) Mark the top and one of the sides on the ring so you put it in correctly after drilling the holes for mounting. put the ring into place and mark the holes for holding the speaker. Do this because it will be easier than eye-balling it only to have your screws hit the metal on the door. I used plexiglass to see where the holes go, but you can use paper to make a template if you don't want to use plexi. 3) The tweeter upgrade works great and bolts right in. it comes with the screws you need and the little plastic doo-hickies. Take the plastic doo-hickies with you to Napa so you can get the correct size for mounting the speakers in the door. 4) use a #10 screw. #8 will work, but I was not happy with how much lateral pressure they put on the doo-hickies to hold them in place so i used #10 and those worked just fine. |

Some MB Quart Premium 6.5" components will fit int he front. However, you WILL need ~3/4" spacer and then you will likely need another spacer in front of the speaker to ensure there is enough speaker travel for the low notes. I simply took a strip of plywood and drilled a hole in it and put it on top of the speaker ring w/ a little DynaMat around it to keep vibration down. This totally eliminated the rattle coming from the door and the door WILL still snap into place just fine.
