Of course you don't need a car like this...

But the entertainment value will be immense.

If you don't get it, we will question your man- (or woman-) hood.

Lol. Well thats some good encouragement.

I highly doubt we will agree on any price since it's not officially released yet. Maybe agree on a trade in price though.

... but your trade-in value will change over the next 4-6 months prior to the STi's arrival.

Funny,
I read about both the RSX and the WRX for months before they hit the sales room floor. I test drove the WRX and liked it and a couple months later test drove the RSX and liked it too. Stock per stock they are both great cars.

But yeah,
If you want to mod the WRX then you are in for a treat cause with a few thousand more bucks you can turn the WRX into one snarly little four door that will cause you to be addicted to the power. The word "Fun" encapsulates the WRX for me. I agree with throwing the word "need" out the window cause the WRX is far from a cutesy sporty compact car which the RSX is. The WRX is an affordable car with BEASTLY potential.

... I think trade-in value is where most people will feel the pain (myself included). Dealers may agree to sell the STi at MSRP, but may lowball your trade-in's value.

Good points. We will see how it goes. I shouldn't have any trouble selling off the RSX in the summer.

I almost bought a WRX myself. But for the price difference and what you get I think the RSX was the better buy. The main reason i didn't purchase a WRX was due to it's interior.

Now the STi's interior is DAMN sexy.

I wouldent do it, enjoy your RSX for a 2 or 3 years more, and it will give Subaru some time to work all of the bugs out of the STi so you will get a less troublesome car.

A good point. I don't think that a redesign is due until around '06 for the Impreza, so you should be able to see how the '04 runs and go for an '05 when the time comes. That's my optimistic plan, at least.

Angry

Can the STI be ordered with/without the wintertime raw gas smell/leaking fuel lines?
Clutch shudder to 60 in 5.???? seconds.
If you have that kind of ching, wait a few months for the Honda S2200 or buy a Z. Ford going to have an all new muskrat as a 2005, 300+ nothing like the grunt in an 8 banger.
When the WRX first came to us in early 2001, the dealers were getting sticker and then some, now they won't give you 17K on a trade-in, and we should beg and grovel for our chance at an STI. They are going to be in short supply on purpose, stay in the RSX, wait for the smoke to clear (after the fuel leak explosion!)

Dont buy it. Gonna have drive by wire. Step on the throttle and it will take 10 seconds for the ECU to decide to move the throttle. Dealers gonna slaughter the early adopters too. They're coming out with a 3.6 twin turbo later in 03 for Japan/Europe/Australia. Gonna weigh less than 3000lbs and have a standard throttle. Grey market that beast in. That's what you want. Unless you're in California. If you do that there they will put you in SUV prison. Anyway, gas going to 10 a gallon for 89 octane soon as we get the war cranked up and nobody except moonshiners who convert their vehicles to run on ethanol gonna be able to drive anyways. Sell your gas guzzlers and buy a segway off of amazon....If you're ridin in a STI your ridin with bin ladin (or saddam).

I wouldn't worry about putting down the deposit. I would wait and let all the suckers pay out first. There was all that hoopla about the 350Z being a rare commodity and prices being jacked up. It was for the first few thousand customers, now the dealer by my house have 3 track edition 350Z's just rotting on the lot. Since you have a nice ride now, use it and wait a little bit and the ball will be in your court.

I'm not giving them a deposit. No way are they keeping a chunk of my money just to keep my name on a list. I'll give them a few bucks so they can write up an agreement. But that's it.

I wouldn't fret about the first-year problems with the STi. It is build on a proven platform with a proven motor that has been wrung out to a fare-thee-well.

The real question is what are you looking for with the STi? If you didn't buy the WRX because of the interior, don't expect the STi to bowl you over with luxury. The STi is a pure performance car. The interior is nice, but you aren't getting an Audi, here.

If you want the performance, go right ahead and sign yourself up.

Now, C Dale makes good sense, but IMHO, because there is so much other cool stuff from Subaru coming down the pike, purportedly. For example, if you had to choose between STi, STi Forester or STi Legacy, which would you select? Potentially, by 2006 model year, this could be the choice the happy Subaru devotee would be forced to make.

All three cars with the same driveline/motor setup, but probably tuned differently, the Legacy and Forester for more bottom-end torque, and all. Now for me, the STi Forester would be a no-brainer, but that's me.

The thing I don't want to see (though I'm sure we will) is first-year STi owners carping about things that happen to the car after the early adopters signed on, like '02-'03 WRX owners, carping about the '04 having a sunroof, in-windshield antenna, bollocks like that.

If you've researched the car thoroughly, (or as thoroughly as you can research an as-yet nonexistent car) and are satisfied that you want one (not lust, but a rational decision), go for it.

I went through a similar reasoning process, but decided, a) because of the cool Scoobies coming down the pike and b) because I just can't abide the looks of the STi, that I wouldn't take the STi plunge, despite the immense appeal of the car's performance.

S2000 were having tranny clutch problems... many experienced
2nd gear grinding... not sure if they were fixed after 2002...

Z... i think has some tranny problem as well... also heard the first
batch the speakers were totally crap... (though I'm not too sure)

Ford.. didn't the production of SVT cobra halted a few months
ago????

The point is... every car has its set of problems... no car or brand
will guarantee to be problem free...

It was fixed in the 2002 models and dealers weren't giving 2000-2001 owners a hard time when they came in to fix it. Basically a free clutch replacement. Some dealers would even put in a lightweight flywheel for you (you provide it) while they did the TSB clutch job.

This post is bad on so many levels...

just for starters, S2200 and 350Z are coupe/convertible with RWD. The STi is a sedan with AWD.

Next, if you want a Ford, go for it. Is it an AWD sedan? I'm indifferent to 300hp in a low lag turbo to 300hp in a heavy V8.

Nobody said you had to buy a WRX, and the fact that you are getting 17k on a 2 year old trade in is not terrible. And, this has nothing to do with your STi begging or groveling, dealers will take your money no matter what you trade in.

And, I think the STi should be in the high 4's to very low 5's to 60, even if it does have a second shift. but, who cares? If you just want a 0-60 car, of course there are cheaper better alternatives.
