(Help) Ideal Audio Setup Upgrade for 07 WRX TR
I’ve been thinking about upgrading the sound system in my 2007 WRX TR. I plan to go with an aftermarket HU, amp, and door speakers.
Today I took measurements of the factory door speakers and it looks like 6” could fit both front and rear. Very few companies make a 6” door speaker with optimum Watt RMS levels. (I’m shooting for either 75 Watt RMS per speaker or 100 Watt RMS per speaker, depending on Sub-Woofer settings. I don’t have plans to install a sub now, but the Pioneer amp I’m looking at is 5 channel, so I can install one later if I want.) My question is, since I can’t find a speaker with optimum size and Watt RMS, can I go up to maybe a 6.5” speaker with a spacer and still fit with modifications, or a smaller speaker with the right Watt RMS? And, if I was to use a speaker that isn’t exactly 75 or 100 Watt RMS, would it still sound good with that amp? Thanks. (Ideally I wouldn’t want to modify things if not necessary, but with what I’m hoping for I can’t really be too picky) Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC

If i remember correctly, you can use 6.5" in the fronts and the rears are 4". With anything audio, I think it's best to first establish what you are aiming to get..do you want the best sounding quality audio, loudest etc.. do you want overpowering bass or are you trying to highlight the lows, mids, highs (subs, speakers, tweeters)
There are several options of speakers ranging from 30 watts RMS to 100+ - what you need to consider if how the power is going to be delivered to them via the amp..so make sure your amp is capable of sending out the required RMS power so that they sound crisp and clean. I personally would probably run a 4 channel amp for my speakers and a mono amp for the sub, but if you're not going for anything glass shattering, a decent/above average 5 channel will work fine. All of this though means nothing if the source of the music isn't great, the head unit isn't decent and the music isn't EQ'd properly. |

I ended up going with a Sony XAV-AX5000 HU, which is mostly personal preference but reviews look good. I got a Pioneer GM-DX975 amp, Polk Audio DB652 6.5” speakers for the front, and Polk Audio DB522 5.25” for the rear (I’ve read of people doing a 5.25 for the rear and it looks like it’ll fit, so we’ll see), with a wiring kit and some other accessories. I also bought a set of speaker adapters from carstereoadapters.com, which should help with fitment of the speakers. I will try to report back to this after the install to explain how it went.
(Thanks for the reply, this explained things pretty well) Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC |

The fronts are 6.5, but very shallow! Right around 2 inches in depth with a spacer added. I ended up running Alpine Type X pro comps in 5.25 up front since I could go with a higher end speaker that didn't have to be a shallow mount. Rears are easy to trim out to 5.25, and have no depth issues. Amps fit nicely under the seats, and headunit wise go with whatever flavor.
