Looking for someone to talk to about BAR Engine change/swap process.
Hi,
I am looking to talk to someone about the BAR engine change/swap process. I can read, I can search and I generally understand what is required but the questions I have are more... nuanced The two main questions are to in the two model years that I am looking at for my "change/swap candidate" there was not manual transmission option. If I show up to the Ref swap completed with all related smog equipment from the "donor", but with a manual transmission is that going to be an fail automatically? Or am I going to have to make it automatic to get a BAR sticker then swap to manual later. If the manual trans is not already an automatic fail, if I show up to the Ref with a manual transmission and all the Auto Trans trouble codes in the ROM permanently disabled, is that an fail even if the OBD readiness monitors for smog check are on(OK).

If you believe everything here then the answer is any modification of the stock ECU is a no-no. Otherwise that's all I got. It was much easier in the old days when the trans had a separate TCU.

If you have to ask the question, I think you already know the answer...
Edit: So glad I don't live in CA anymore |

Adding a link for reference It's impossible to answer your question without specifics. non-OBD2 car receiving OBD2 engine The transmission and evaporative systems will be allowed to remain in the recipient vehicle configuration, but must function appropriately OBD2 receiving OBD2 engine All emission system configurations must be in the original emission control system configuration as the donor vehicle, including, but not limited to, the transmission, evaporative system, exhaust, and intake For your second question, I had to have a dealer generate a checksum and certify that my ECU was not modified. The Ref used that checksum when the checked my ECU to verify that it was unmodified. If disabling those codes modifies the checksum, I bet they would fail you. Any reason you've picked an automatic only engine? I'm guessing you're going with a 6 cylinder? Last edited by Shinji N; 08-08-2020 at 12:58 AM. |

Thanks, I've read through that and nothing popped out at me.
Truth be told it's not a Subaru, although I've tossed around H6 swapping my 2010 forester, but I know that this community has had successful BAR swap inspections. My swap is OBD2 to OBD2. I am considering to attempt a 2000/01 Ford Explorer 5.0L(...not the coyote) into a 2000 ford ranger. It is 99% plug and play, however the expo 5.0 were auto only, and the 5.0L manuals in the F150 disappeared long before 2000. From my research my if I don't connect an auto to the ecu loaded with the 2000/01 expo 5.0 rom it will pop some transmission codes. Seems some in "free states" just flash to different map or just delete the codes on the Expo rom with the use of like a accessport device with a accesstuner race like level of editing. I was not expecting someone to talk openly about what I was asking about in a thread like this but you never know. Edit: ...Auto, then manual from the sounds of it... |

Vehicle engine/transmission has to be either the same model year or newer. If you have a 2000 ford ranger and you swap a 2009 ford ranger engine/trans it will pass BAR/REF inspection.
This was still valid back in 08 when I was in the process doing my swap. Call the BAR and ask them, I was on the phone with them almost every other week making sure that my car would pass. Good luck. |
