Default New composite head gasket. Anyone using it?

I saw this on IAG's website. I had talked with one of the IAG engine builders out here at RMIC a few months back, and he was telling me about these new gaskets. He was saying these are proving to be as good or better than o ring JE proseal. Any first hand experiences with these on here?

IAG has told me they have tested it with great results, better results that pro-seal. My next engine will have these.

I should have mine by tomorrow. I hope they are better than pro-seal, I wasn't to impressed with them.

They are absolutely better than Pro-Seal. Why? Because they are manufactured by a company called FEL-PRO. The very same company that is responsible for the head gaskets installed in MANY of the professional NHRA engines that are running methanol, alcohol, ethanol, leaded gasoline and HIGH boost engines, regularly.

You can read more about the company and their "Performance Gaskets with Wire Ring" here:

http://www.felpro.com/parts/performa...d-gaskets.html

If it helps at all, it's the very same gaskets I will be using in my build, which will see 45PSI.

Peace

I thought Athena made the fire ring gaskets that Outfront and IAG sells. When Outfront first posted a picture on FB they included #Athena and #JEPistons. it was my understanding that Athena also made the Pro seal, (or pro leak in my case)
the FelPro does look very similar though.

Having had issues with the JE gaskets, why would I choose these over regular OEM gaskets that seem to hold fine in the 400 whp range?

not sure you would at 400. these are for high HP, and I think they are ready for 14mm head studs. IAG told me they work better so far than copper o-rings and a regular MLS gasket.

My understanding is that the JE Proseal can hang over the edge into the cylinder, and that is causing the issue with those. I think they revised them to fix this issue, but I would never trust them again.

That was what I saw as well with the over hang. I think the question was "what is big power". I have plans to make more power next year after a bigger turbo, but it'd still be around 500 whp and maybe 550 wtq down low.

I'm still on standard ARP2000 studs too though.

The wife got these from iag before IAG & Outfront released them to public. They are very nice haven't pushed them hard yet but from the reviews and such they will hold up good.

IAG is using these instead of O-ringing.

Got them today. The best part is they breeze right over my 1/2 studs. Im hopeful they will hold 37 psi an 8k

^ Awesome to hear! Let us know how they hold up at 37 psi. What turbo are you pairing it with, if you don't mind me asking? I'm just curious as to what lb/min range. My build (still 2.5 displacement) will be seeing 8.5K and somewhere around 43-45psi on a 90 lb/min turbo and Ignite 114.

Peace

Its pretty weird how the fire rings are not part of the gasket

I'm running the Gen 2 gtx35 85 lb a min

Yes we found that strange too stu.

We did notice there is a difference from one side to the other on the ring. wondering if someone accidentally messed them up if that would cause issues.

Grooved side up. or, left to right? What studs are you using, and what did you torque them too? I have the outfront 1/2 and was considering not following there directions on the untorquing sequence and just doing the 115 ft-lb outer and 125 center. I'm not sure I want to torque the fire ring twice.

She is using IAG's 14mm head studs no issues they slide right over.

And we followed IAG's torquing steps and specs.

Ok, so to clear a few things. JE gaskets are Athena's but they seemingly refuse to sell the fire ring option that they've had for years. I first saw Athena at PRI in 2011, which just happened to be right after JE bought their rights to distro in the US.

As for Fel-Pro, I'm glad to see someone got them to make some good stuff.

As for puns commonly used among shops; Pro-Fail and Fail-Pro....no one is completely happy with either. I however am curious to see how these new IAG Fel-Pro's with fire ring fare.

Using a set in my hx40 build! Will report back, should be together in the next week or so. Wont be able to really push it till spring but then she'll be around 32psi.

I cant comment on the new IAG gaskets yet. Should have some mid next week. I can comment on the newer style "Fail-Pros" IMO it was a "Fail to install" Who wants to admit they ****ed up though.. Ive actually used the newer Fel-Pro gaskets past 40psi without a issue. I have a few builds running around for the past 3+ years with them.

Im interested to compare the two...

Any answers on how you torque these?
Did you make any attempt to match up the water passage holes in the gasket to the closed deck or heads? There seems to be some mismatch.
Is it multi-layer anywhere?

Its composite no metal, except for the fire rings. That's how they line up on the closed deck, ne real wiggle room.

I'm curious how that composite material will hold up to random coolants used, and the loose fire ring worries me a little. At least they are already set up for larger studs, my head gaskets had to be modified. I'm running the G2 35r as well, but with a spoolinator kit.

Once the fire ring is in the gasket it is held pretty snug. I will actually seat and make a groove in the head so decking is a must when you have to rebuild. I do that any way's so no big deal. I'm excited to see how much cyl pressure it will hold. The gasket material seemed pretty durable and has some sort of coating over it, I guess only time will tell.

So these are designed for oem liner style with aluminum on the block and the heads for the fire ring to bite into apparently. Not for something that's been sleeved. Seems like a legit idea, so long as the composite holds up and the fire ring is a good bit harder than the aluminum.
