No it doesn't. Its definitely not the TOB if that is what you were getting at. I had it replaced with the updated one when the car was just a few months old and this noise wasn't a symptom.

Default Hydraulic Timing chain tensioner

The noise is a faulty timing chain tensioner. End thread...

I noticed a faint tapping noise when it got cold out and when the oil is not up to temp. The noise goes away on idle after the car is warmed up (usually 180-200 degree oil temp). First time I noticed it was after changing the trans mount and when it got really cold out. I never thought twice about it. I learned to live with the variety of Subaru boxer noises. Cold start chain rattle, clutch fork chirps, TOB screech, front struts pops, diff noises on snow, DI ticks, (very little to no sound proofing in the 2015 model) and so on. Coming up on 4 years and she is has been running like a champ. I stopped carrying about the noises.

Any source on this? ***129300; Mine sounds like its coming from the back of the engine underneath the intercooler. Might have to re-scope the front (timing chain area) again to confirm.

Sorry, he already ended the thread. There's nothing more that can be said or done now.

Scope the front left side of motor (drivers side)

Default Reviving

Started to notice the same noise in my 2015 WRX just after the warranty expired! When cold is noticeable at 900-1000 RPM. Goes away after warming up. Need to know if this is problematic over time. Hoping all of you experiencing this a while back have some long term results to share.

My 15 has done it for about 2 years. Dunno if it problematic or not.

Took my 17 to the dealer with 33k and the same noise in the video (also only prevalant when the engine is cold and 900-1000rpm). Dealer states it's the High Pressure Fuel pump that runs off the cam from the driver's side head. Scoped it then and there and that is the source of the noise. They are evaluating to see if replacement is necessary or just noisy.

I was told by several people with the same noise that it was the Hydraulic Timing Chain Tensioner. When I watched the videos, it shows more of a rattle at start up, not an ongoing worble noise at 900 RPM until the car warms up. I asked them again to verify as I don't have the rattle, and was told "yes" it s the Tensioner. as it went away after being replaced. So I took it to the dealership. They couldn't confirm the tensioner was the problem. They also stated it's usually more of a rattle at start up. They said the only way to confirm was to tear it town and investigate, but that would be costly because I'm out of warranty by 3K miles, and they didn't recommend it. They didn't feel it was harmful. I also heard from many that they had that same noise for years and it was never a problem. Interesting that it might be the HPFP. I think I will take the cover off and listen to it with the scope.

Any success? I have the same noise, and I also noticed the rattle sound on startup so I am inclined to believe that this is an issue with the tensioner. Has anyone with the noise solved it by replacing the tensioner?

Sort of...I had the dealership listen to it and they said they didn't think it was the tensioner, as thats usually more of a distinct rattle. Also, because it goes away and the car runs perfect, they didn't recommend a tear down inspection. Or at least they wouldn't cover it. I was just advised to monitor. They just thought it sounded like normal cold idle noise, and as the car warms up it goes away. To date, no change and car still runs perfect. Responses form other forums confirmed the same. People have had the noise for years with no negative effects. As far as the tensioner, people who have had it replaced, say it eventually comes back. Was also told by a Subaru mechanic that even when the tensioner is at the loosest tension, it's not enough to negatively effect the timing/engine, so it doesn't appear to be something you want to address until you tear down an engine. It's good that we are vigilant about noises, but a curse at the same time. This appears to be nothing we need to worry about.

This car has been out for over 6 years now. Pretty much all stage 2 cars have the chain rattle and many stock cars have it too. I have yet to come across a single tensioner failure.
