seems messy and also, what will you do with the water and e85 mix once the test is complete?

dump it in the tank? pour it down the drain? 'yikes', and 'i hope not' goes to both of those options. flexfuel sensor, low pressure fuel pump (and hopefully a HPFP will come out soon) for me here as a next step after FBO.
His process is a huge pain but he's fine with it. He'll go when the station is empty, pump 91 and leaving some room for E85, push his car to the E85 pump, test, calculate, then fill. No idea what he does with the water/E85 mix though.

On the topic of the HPFP, it looks like Nostrum may have started selling units, but it looks like they're OOS for now:

Thanks for the link to the hpfp. I heard there was one in the works and i think it's this one.

I went FBO at 30k and plan to do E85 at 50K when i swap out plugs the next time. Currently at 35K which gives me about 1.5yrs before the 50K mark, so hopefully the guinea pigs here will show over that time if the hpfp is a winner or loser

some people are proud of going out of their way to pursue something they love. no knocks on that. i still change the oil on both of my cars even if it takes up my time and i enjoy doing it.

but imo if you are running high e contents and also driving like a dick, you'll be refuelling a lot more often compared to pump gas! personally, having to wait and the resulting calculations/math would kill me.

the stations by my house have ethanol-only pumps separate from the gas pumps, so having to drive up from the E pump to the gas pump would already be a hassle.

rumor has it that ibuildracecars has a hpfp in the works as well, would be prudent to wait for the results of both.

Selling a solution for around $600-700 cheaper. Should be out soon

That is the one. White connector with a wire harness attached to it. I noticed that too when installing my ECBS this weekend

Delayed response. Helped with the Rev hang which was driving me nuts. Pretty solid power pickup from stock.

None really, guess being lucky for so long made it ok. And it wasn’t in the long run.

Circumstances: Wide open throttle from third to fourth let off and started hearing a loud knocking noise coming from the engine. Oil in car is at the normal level on stick, no oil loss at all
Actual engine failure: unknown at this time
It’s been a few months since this post but I wanted to give an update. I had the car towed to the dealer and they said it was a spun bearing and that I would need a new shortblock. They quoted me about $8000 to do this work. I decided to call soa and see if they would help me out. They said that because my car had been modified (Intake and tune) that they wouldn’t be willing to help me out. They said they could cover it under the sti recall if it wouldn’t have been modified. There was no way I was spending 8k on that car. I then thought about getting a longblock but after research that would be Just as expensive as a low mileage longblock is about $5500 w/o install. I then decided to see what the dealer would give me as a trade. They were able to help me out and now I own a 2019 Sti!! So I guess in a way this is a success story ***129335;***127995;****9792;***65039;

Congrats on getting a solid outcome at the end of it all! There's a thread with a guy running intake and ots tune just like how you had it when you spun the bearing... hope he doesn't suffer the same fate.

How does the ots tune and an intake prevent a good flow of oil from lubricating the rod bearings? Like how do you get spun bearings from that?

Intake? Check
OTS tune? Check
Clear and readily available information regarding said combo as problematic? Check

Car blows up for whatever reason -- could be irrelevant to the intake or tune -- and get denied warranty because of it? Check

So a $300 mod + $500 AP running a garbage OTS tune is a smart move to make, considering the warranty denial that will follow and cost to repair? Who cares if it caused the failure... $8k repair due to $800 "mods" with no research is a s**t situation to be in.

If the car blew up/spun bearing while stock? No issues at all with warranty.

As I said, hope that other guy does not suffer the same fate -- considering he seems to refuse advice to actually learn about the platform.

The car is 6 years old this year; there is a plethora of information available -- no excuse to make a noob move and mod with out knowing what you are doing/changing or the consequences there in.

I can relate to this more and more as I get older. Regardless of the the quality of the parts & tune, there's still a chance of failure that's completely unrelated such as mechanical or manufacturing defect. Subaru is notorious for not being mod-friendly. This is why my powertrain will remain stock until the warranty is over or the car is paid off.

I'm sure that most of us with newer Subarus are still making car payments (because most people are).. and an $8k bill is a difficult amount to stomach on a new car that you're still making payments on and that would have otherwise been covered under warranty. Is an $5k+ bill worth it for $800 worth of mods and the little power that's to be had from them? Most of us "budget modders" don't have a rainy day fund for a new engine in our savings account.

The WRX is certainly "harder" to keep stock due to the factory tuning. A "stage 1" tune drastically improves the driveability, but is it worth the trade-off? It's been much easier to fight off the temptation of modding with the STI since it comes with a better tune from the factory.

What did you get on your trade if you don't mind me asking? Was your car paid off at the time or were you financing it? I would think the trade amount wouldn't be very good due to the motor being shot and would assume you'd be upside down if were financing.

Also i thought SOA has to prove that the intake & tune caused the engine to blow to deny the warranty service?

Yes but... It's pretty easy to say the tune could have caused it. They can easily point to the tune and say "the modification to the ECU caused the motor to operate outside its original design limitations, therefore we are not held liable/responsible for this failure"

Sucks to suck. Pay to play -- So if you're gunna play, play hard and play smart.

Edit to think more, this was the first time I've ever hit the rev limit. I've owned the car since Feb 2016 and 45k miles. If I hit the rev limit for 3 seconds that far into ownership and I spin a bearing, I'm not sure why I want to continue owning this car.
I agree with you. That’s nothing. The rev limiter is set by Subaru and should be safe. The people here are jerks.
I can’t believe you babied your car so much. I’ve just blown my engine after 67K miles, and it’s because I hadn’t changed the oil in 12K miles and was driving at the max speed in 5th gear for more than 30 seconds (empty highway, I’m not a maniac). That’s more a reason to break a motor than what you’re saying. Good luck!
