Default Stock 2015 Exhausts Difference - WRX vs STI

I found a stock STI exhaust for sale near me and I was wondering if it would be worth buying it.

Are there any differences at all?
Sound? Performance? Pipes size? Mufflers?

I tried to to a search, but I did not see much about the stock STI exhaust, only the upgraded one.

The part numbers on the rear and are different. It would be interesting to see if inside the mufflers is different. I know they were on my Charger Daytona

Default Upgrade to STI Exhaust or ?

See an option to upgrade my upcoming 2016 WRX purchase, to an STI exhaust? Seeing no earlier answer on this thread, thought I would repost.

If not this choice, what would folks recommend please, IF they wanted a SLIGHTLY to SOMEWHAT louder than factory WRX exhaust, with absolutely no drone at highway speeds?

Thank you in advance.

John
The best answer to this question would be for you to support your local muffler/exhaust/fabrication shop and tell them what you want.

A nice bump in performance, while keeping your goal would be to go toward a straight through resonator design and a straight through muffler design. I find these to be the most "dynamic"

Are we talking about the STI OEM catback or the WRX optional STI/SPT catback?

Am considering this factory accessory when I place my WRX order, listed as STI Perfromance Exhaust System:

You would be unwise to make that choice

There is definitely some confusion going on here. There are two "STI" exhausts.

1) The factory STI exhaust, which seems to be no more free-flowing than the WRX exhaust.

2) The "STI Performance" exhaust as an upgrade option (Which WRX John posted, above). This is an improvement over both the standard WRX and STI exhausts as it is a 3" stainless steel exhaust that is more free flowing.

Why do you say that? Do you have experience with the 2011+ SPT exhausts? Are you aware that they are MUCH improved over the SPT exhausts offered for the prior model years?

The STI upgraded exhaust is an excellent choice for people looking to improve flow without dramatically increasing sound. I went through A LOT of exhaust variations on my 2011 STI sedan, from COBB to Invidia, and even Nameless. But in the end the SPT cat-back turned out to be the perfect one. It provides the extra flow without the extra noise.

I had my STI protuned with an Invidia catted DP mated to the Q300 cat-back. I swapped the Q300 for an SPT cat-back and dyno results proved little to no difference between the two, as far as whp/tq are concerned. If you don't believe me, search around. There are plenty of other people who experienced the same thing.

When I picked up my 2015, one of the benefits was that it came with the STI performance exhaust. Like I said, if you want the extra flow without the extra sound, the STI performance exhaust is a great choice.

Absolute truth. I had one on my '11 STi as well.

Besides the 3" tubing and mandrel bends the critical Y connector is cast stainless with none of the flow restrictions of other exhausts there. Further, the "mufflers" are really twin straight through resonators in each housing.

The reason it is relatively quiet despite its high flow is because it was made to conform to the latest JDM noise standards implemented just prior to 2011.

In my own opinion it is the best there is, with the best sound. Downside is it weighs more than OEM and is pricey... but you get what you pay for in this case.

Thank you "scOOter" and and "SeeeeeYa" for your analysis and info. I will order it with my car, as it sounds perfect for my upcoming daily driver, including my doing hour after hour of highway driving.

This morning I actually noticed a guy in my local Subaru Facebook page selling his STI performance exhaust for just $400! That's a freaking steal. If I didn't already have one I'd be all over this.

https://www.facebook.com/brian.rando...01875636687790

Message him and see if is willing to ship it. It would even be worthwhile to offer an extra $100 on top of his asking price to have him ship it out to you.

Here's a screenshot of his post.

I have the performance STI exhaust option on my 15 wrx i love it, the piping is larger diameter and the quality is top notch big improvement in sound and quality over the stock exhaust.

The STI exhaust option for the WRX or STI has no resonator on the mid pipe per illustrations online.

I got a STOCK STI exhaust this weekend on craigslist. I really just wanted the pipe with the resonator but he threw in the mufflers. They do have different part numbers from the STOCK WRX mufflers. Maybe I can weigh them or put just one on and see if they sound different. They look pretty darn similar on the outside.

They are different, and $350 each new. Nice grab.

Appears that someone looks up to unclescotty, and is trying way to hard to impress him.
