Any opinions on running the MR501 17x8 +42 with 245/45r17 tires on a stock 2013 WRX hatch?

I'm looking for something to handle rough roads and occasional light dirt/gravel. The slightly larger tire vs stock seems like it could provide a little more cushion without significantly affecting turn-in, compared to say a 15" or 16" wheel setup, which I have also considered.

I would prefer zero rubbing. And while performance is priority, look is important as well. I love the look of this setup seen in the second photo but I understand those are rally tires.

Thanks for any input.

Thanks for your input. I've found all of those photos. I have searched and searched

First photo says stock tires, so 235/45r17 not 245/45r17.

That white hatch looks fantastic but I didn't see any specs posted anywhere. Looks like stock size tires. This is still an option and one I'm leaning heavily towards.

ETA: Probably going with Braid. Not too keen on the 501 weights.

Looking to get some MR503 wheels with some sticky tires. Method now offers the MR503 in a wider wheel that I'm interested in, but clearance is going to be important in my case. I've got a Brake Duct Cooling system that takes up a bit of space inside my wheel well and I don't want new wheels to rub (or rub much).

I've regulated my heavy 18in Method 501s to daily use with some all-seasons now, but the 503 will be wrapped in sticky performance tires for autocross / short track.

The new Method 503s are 18 x 9.5 with +40mm offset. Anyone running these?

Love the look of these wheels, but not the weight. I know they are strong for rally but for DD I like low weight wheels. You can really feel it.

They are great! This is on a 2018 STI, so I came from 19" wheels. Specs below on the Methods.

Wheels: Method MR503 18x9.5, 5x114.3, 40mm
Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 245/40/18

I went to these tires when I was still on the 19" OEM wheels and absolutely love them. Insane wet performance and just a good all around summer tire. They work fine in Texas winter too.

Thanks for reply. I want to get rid of my 19s too and came across these. Wanted a lighter wheel to wrap Michelin PS4s on. Im in South Carolina, so it doesnt get too cold out here. Forgot to ask, are you on stock suspension and are the wheels noticeably lighter?

Yeah completely stock suspension. The wheels are lighter, but it's been a while since I switched. It was definitely noticeable though.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! Pulled the trigger during their 15% Sale and a Memorial Day Weekend Sale for the tires. They should be here next week.

So I'll officially have three sets of Methods now.

Daily Use
MR501 w/Continental DWS

Winter / RallyX setup
MR502 w/General Altimax Arctic

Track / AutoX
MR503 w/Michelin Pilot Sport 4S

:n the way::

Default I like your winter setup a lot.

Mine is the MR502 w/ Studded Hakka 9's. Only ran them for a few months when I lived in Lake Placid. Now that we're moving to Charleston I'll have no chance to enjoy them again

I just got a set of the MR502's in 16x7 +30mm offset for my 2017 STI. Stock Brembos and stock suspension. I got them for rally-x. I went with 16s because I wanted a taller sidewall than a 17" wheel. Method's website said the 16's will clear pre-2018 STI brembos so I gave it a shot. They technically do clear the 2017 Brembos but damn it's close! I'm not so worried about the calipers scraping due to wheel flex just more so worried about the calipers getting chewed up from dirt and rocks getting wedged between the wheel and caliper. I might get 1-2mm spacers machined to get the wheel a bit further away from the caliper.

I'm not 100% certain yet if I'll end up running them. If i do the plan is to mount General Altimax Arctic 12 tires or Firestone Winterforce 2 tires in 205 x 60R16.

Will post an update if i decide to stick with them and run them in rally-x.

Thanks for this info! I am thinking of running the same spec. I personally wont mind the calipers being that close, but how much does the wheel poke out from the car? Do you mind taking a pic to showcase that?
Thanks!

I decided to give the setup a try and got the Altimax tires mounted, installed them on the car, and took it for a spin. The fitment looks realllly good IMO. Uploaded more pics to flickr:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/188872...posted-public/

Doing the math with the rim width and offsets (stock compared to the Methods) the Method wheels stick out about 0.25" more. Plus the sidewalls on the Altimax's are so plump and stick out a lot past the rim.

There wasn't any rubbing when i took it for a test drive over speed bumps but i'm slightly worried the tires will contact somewhere in the wheel wells when rally-xing and the suspension is traveling a lot more. Nonetheless i'm gonna give them a try at the next rally-x.

I also decided not to go with spacers in the front given i'm already worried about the clearance to the fenders.

I've had these 503s on for a good part of the summer now. Absolutely loving these but I need to make a few adjustments to make them work.

Method 503 Rally
18x9.5 | 5x114.3mm | +40mm/6.90"
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Tires
275/35 ZR18

They're light, they're wide, and they have a super aggressive offset. That last part may look fantastic in photos, but my stock 2016 STI suspension does have them rub slightly in the rear. I'm going to need to either go to a different suspension setup or roll the rear fenders slightly to make it work right. Not the end of the world, but just something I knew would be close when I ordered these.

Method 503 Rally - Matte Black

Overall very happy with these. If you plan to run the 18x9.5 size, they are slightly too big without some kind of suspension change or rolled fender or both. However the 18x8 will be no problem. I opted for the wider set knowing the potential issue of rubbing, but since my Method 501s are already the 18x8 size, I thought I'd take the plunge. Go big or go home I suppose!

Late with the update but I did end up sticking with the MR502's in 16x7 +30mm offset for my 2017 STI. Competed with them in 2 rally cross events without an issue! And the winter tires provided plenty of grip.

Sick pic from the first event thanks to White Hawk Rally:

Ok guys, hoping someone can help or lead me in the right direction but just bought some MR501 V-Spec's (15") and am putting them on my '02 WRX. The website said they would fit but they most definitely rub the calipers on the passenger side and are paper thin close on the driver.

I'm assuming the only fix for this is to go with the smaller 4 pot calipers??? I just have the clunky oem ones on there now.

@sitdamp I just started racing with NWRA too! You going to June Jamboree?

Pretty much run of the mill when it comes to Methods on wrx's but they never get old to look at.

Anyone know if the MR701 15" will fit the 2006 WRX front brembo brakes?
I'm look at 15" 502s which will fit, but no specific info on the 701.

Have you been able to work out the rear rubbing? Did rolling the fenders work?

Awesome man! I just got mine, same specs as yours! Going the rally route myself. With my 2018 WRX (limited) it obviously has the clunky cast iron front calipers, not Brembos. Test fitting one on the front tonight but according to all my research and countless emails to other vendors, the +30mm offset will clear stock calipers with a 10mm spacer. However, given the fact that you are running these w/ the Brembo's w/o any contact issues, I'm hoping I'm in the clear. Worse case scenario - install said spacers, longer wheel studs, and get open end lug nuts. Am hoping this won't be too much of a strain on the hub bearings thereafter.

Have you run into any problems thus far??

Car's looking gooood playing in the dirt!! That's what these cars were designed for!! Not stanced with negative 5 camber, 20" wheels & bags, but whatever to each their own.

For those wondering the wheel weights on these 16" 502's, just weighed one on my Beuer home scale - (will test on another scale we have just for good measure & update later).

19.2 lbs!! (No center cap installed, obvi no tire as well).
Goal was to look for a lightweight wheel set up with least amount of unsprung weight vs having to swap front brake calipers to go with the VT-Spec 15"s (which is ideal but require quite a bit of work)
