Perrin BugEye15K: Project $15k, Bug-Eye Budget Build
PERRIN Performance and NASIOC are happy to be assembling what we feel is a great project for many Subaru enthusiasts, both new and old to the WRX scene. We understand that many Subaru enthusiasts are looking to have fun, improve performance and still be able to drive the car daily all on a budget. Thankfully for many NEW people to Subaru the early 2002-2004 WRX models have now fallen to purchase prices that most people can now afford. Our goal here is simply to show what people can do with one of theses early examples of the WRX on a budget of $15k (including car) THE BEGINING PROJECT $15K BUDGET SHEET 2002 WRX, USED.............................................. ...........$10,000.00 MISC. You got to see what our equal length header does on a 2.0l. You got to see what the 2.0l could do on stage 2 with OEM cats for street legality. Then we put together a complete stage 4 for Evo and STI type power. We also got lucky because the car we chose for this came with lowering springs, a 3" exhaust and a fresh clutch. That right there saved us $1k-$1.5k. -More than one way If Perrin was to recommend a package

YES IT IS!
I don't see that the restoration post has been made yet so I will give a preview here. His car smelled like an old ladies backside, that hadn't been wiped in 3-4 months! The paint was so dull it was rough to the touch and looked white in some sections. I don't think I had seen a car that was this neglected in sometime. NOW, the thankful part is we were able to restore the paint to near new condition (in some cases BETTER than new), and we were able to locate that the A/C exchanger had been liberally dumping water inside the car. (More on that later) Now the car smells great (not too much of the budget was spent on that) the car shines like new and we are ready to get going. (Well honestly we have been working with the car for some time but lagging on getting the info up here.) Needless to say PERRIN has resuced a Blaze Yellow from smelly neglected life! Mroe to come folks! [email protected] |

Car had 108 on the odo when I drove it home. Paid $10k for the car leaving us with a kool $5k to play with. PLUS we intend to sell some of the parts that someone else added to the car to help keep the project coming.
Interestingly enough this car has REALLY revived my original love for the bugeye that I bought new in 2001! Miss that car a lot, but this one is filling that void nicely and I intend to do it well with a complete makeover and performance upgrade. Stay tuned! [email protected] |

The goal is to make it go, stop and turn. Be able to drag race and do a track event, take the wife and kids to dinner, and make it look a bit better than the crowd. We will combine new parts, used parts, craigslist sourced items etc. to help show how far the $5K can go. But being realistic, expect to see a ton of PERRIN items as well as other supporting mfrs on the car.
I am still very excited that this type of performance is now available for near $10K vs $25K for new. Then spend another $5k and really HAVE something unique. More info coming soon. Thank you again for your interest! [email protected] |

Sounds like a cool project!
As for... "we were able to locate that the A/C exchanger had been liberally dumping water inside the car." When I bought my first bugeye, I had that problem, whoever had it before me put a turbo timer in and ran a wire through the hole where the drain hose should be... Did I mention they didn't decide to re-insert the drain hose? I had to deal with soaking wet work clothes for a day because of it, not to mention the horrible smell... Be glad you guys took care of that quick! Lee |

Yeah some previous tool had ran the drain tube right on top of the downpipe. The pipe smoked the hose and the remaining amount fell inside the passenger compartment. We were able to save the carpet etc. to help save bucks for the build, but oh god the stench was just about unbearable!!
Thanks folks! [email protected] |

Realistically I dont see this car being able to do all the things you mentioned and still make it relaible. First off if the car is going to the drag strip and going to be tracked, you need to up grade the gears and there goes your 5K . If you just throw that 5K into mods those gears will break before you even get to the track. |

Hey now! Before peeing in my pool, give us a chance to show what the intentions are as well as the limitations of what we are doing. If we go to the strip / track we understand that will involve limitations to launch rpm etc. BUT, that doesn't mean it can't do those things. Admittedly a hardcore build would be different and the budget would be far different as well. We are planning a similar 2.5L build and a 04/05 STi build to follow these as well, to illustrate the same things.
I guess my point is, if you are trying to imply we are a bunch of ignorant boobs, you are flat wrong. If you are skeptical of the overall project I am a-ok and we will show you and everyone else what is instore. Hope that helps! Thanks again to all for the interest. [email protected] |

To many hamfooted, shift as fast as u possibly can guys have blown up the 5speeds. 18g, or what ever he puts in it will be reliable enough. Hell if hes lucky he will find a used 05 wrx trans with some issues he can draft parts from if need be. 5000$ can go really far if your not paying someone 60 - 80$ an hour to wrench on your car. |

Kendrick nailed it on the head, it's all about the driver. 02 WRX owner right here, 94k on the stock tranny/clutch, and 50k of those miles are 300+ whp/wtq and still no problems yet. And that includes 6 passes down the drag strip and a lot of subaru drives with spirited driving...
Hey Adam, is this project at the warehouse full time? Christina's been telling me about the new place and I wanna come check it out along with this project |

Car is here in the building! Some days you will see it parked outside the building. If you want to check it out, give us a call and we can let you know where it is at stage wise.
Thank you for the interest folks! Adam |
