Hacked Invidia Downpipe. Why?
After dropping my Invidia downpipe to replace a Megan up pipe with a Grimmspeed, I noticed that someone went to town with this pipe.
I've not got a lot of automotive experience, and any knowledge that I do have is for s13/s14's and is 12 years old, minimum. I did not get a detailed list of mods from the previous owner. My best guess is they chopped this up when they made a custom straight pipe exhaust? But that doesn't explain the patch below the top sensor. Or why they moved the trans hanger. Can anyone explain what the hell happened to this thing? PS. It's an 05 STI with 08 block. Dunno how the block being an 08 affects what part years I need to choose. I can see this being a big deal and also a incredible silly nonissue at the same time.

Probably removed a cat rather than spending money on a new downpipe, but not sure about the rear portion or the bracket

Ya whoever did that needs to get punched in the balls. Those welds look like shat, will not be surprised if there is a leak. If you have a couple hundred bucks i would just get a new one. And fill out your profile, what do you mean you have a 05? 05 wrx, 05 sti, 05 forester?

another possibility is that they used a newer downpipe which is longer, another like stated above is remove cat...if the car hit anything they may have repsired it...lots of possibilities

Appears it may have been previously damaged.

Pretty certain: Someone welded in a bung for adding that WBO2. It did not come like that since Invidia places their WBO2 bung in the bellmouth. That was not a catted Invidia based on the factory welding at the bellmouth exit. So no on the cat removal. Welding was certainly done by a "get-er-done" exhaust shop or DIY'er, probably on the cheap to prep it for sale. As long as it fits and does not leak it should be okay. Just a bit fugly but wrapping or coating it might help.
Guesses: That patch does not appear to be in a location for EWG re-circulation. For some reason it looks like they reduced the height and length of that downpipe by cutting, expanding, and re-welding. My guess is that they split the pipe on that upper section and had to weld in that patch to address it. The lower section seems to have not split and was just re-welded around the circumference. Are the 2008+ or Legacy, etc downpipes taller and longer than the GD versions? As suggested that could be what was going on here. Last edited by JarHarms; 09-16-2020 at 11:47 AM. |

I know the support bracket for a Legacy GT with a 5mt and the bracket for a car with a 5eat are located different.
This may be pieced together down pipe. Both my Legacy GT's, an 05 and 09 have invidia dp's. My wagon recently when from a catless to cated dp. one is a 6mt the other a 5mt. Same pipe on both cars. Last edited by Max Capacity; 09-16-2020 at 01:54 PM. |

Any aftermarket DP 04-06 STi will work, maybe even other models. What kind of exhaust was attached to the DP?
I had a non-cat Helix DP that worked great with 450whp. Not sure if they still make Helix. Just find a decent DP used one in the classifieds. |

No muffler/resonator on the tip? That might be why they cut and re welded the DP. If some hillbilly decided to make his own with some pipes and a used damaged DP that might be your answer.
By the looks of your garage and lifts you like things to be done correctly. If you have some cash and like things done the right way, i would recommend getting a whole new DP and exhaust set up. Used is fine. Where are you located? If close to Philly i can give you a hand or let you pick my brain. I used to love working on my 04 sti. Know that thing better then my wife. HAHA |

Ya deff looks like a DIY exhaust. Not to get off topic, don't trust everything you see on the news or Facebook, We live in center city Philly and its not as bad as the news or CNN is reporting. Ya we had some store riots and ppl using fireworks to brake in to ATMs, and national guard closed a few streets but nothing super crazy. Usually its people who play stupid games get stupid prizes. The biggest issues was idiots getting their unemployment money plus additional $600 a week and would spend that money on fireworks. So for 2 months it sounded like a war zone with ****heads blowing up fireworks in the middle of the night and day while i had to wake up at 6am because i am a Medical Director so i worked and still working in the office everyday, making sure i pay my taxes so those degenerates got their unemployment. No stay at home for this guy.
BTW, are those BF G-Force tires? If they are those are great tires. Not for the winter tho. Don't as how i know, LOL |

I moved to a smaller sized city some years ago so I didn't have to put up with any of the nonsense folks like you see. The tires are Federal 595 RS-R's. I don't currently have a snow setup. Still need to figure that out. |
